How to Stream a 24/7 Waterfall Ambience Video on YouTube Without Audio Peaking

Keep waterfall ambience peaks below digital clipping with a properly placed OBS Limiter, a representative end-to-end test, and a continuity plan for a 24-hour YouTube stream.

To keep a 24/7 waterfall stream from clipping, first check the recording’s levels, then add an OBS Limiter as the last audio filter. OBS’s documented defaults are a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release; treat these as starting points, not a YouTube loudness rule. Test the actual footage and sound before going live, and monitor the stream while it runs.

Prepare the video and confirm your rights

Use a continuous waterfall recording or a playlist that can loop without an unwanted pause or abrupt audio jump. Make sure you have permission to stream both the footage and its sound. A loop seam can produce a sudden change in level, so include it in your test rather than checking only a section from the middle.

You can keep the broadcast running with a local encoder such as OBS, or use a cloud service designed to play uploaded videos continuously. With a local encoder, the computer and connection running the stream must remain available. In either case, YouTube requires an encoder connection using its server URL and stream key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.

Set up OBS audio to control peaks

1. Check the source before adding filters

In OBS, watch the audio meter while playing the loudest parts of the recording, including splashes and the loop transition. Keep the signal below 0 dBFS: OBS identifies 0 dBFS as the digital clipping ceiling, and its mixer bar represents peak level. If the source is already clipping, a limiter cannot restore detail that was distorted in the recording. Reduce excessive source gain or use a clean recording.

2. Add a limiter last

  1. In OBS, open the audio source’s Filters.
  2. Add a Limiter audio filter.
  3. Place the limiter at the end of that source’s filter chain. OBS specifically recommends this position.
  4. OBS documents a default threshold of -6.00 dB and release of 60 ms. Start there, then listen to the result and adjust only if the recording calls for it.

A limiter sets a ceiling on output peaks. Its threshold is not a target for the average loudness of waterfall ambience, and OBS’s default is not a YouTube requirement. Avoid compensating for a quiet recording by adding so much gain that the signal clips before it reaches the limiter.

3. Use a compressor only if the recording varies

A compressor can reduce the likelihood of large peaks and is useful earlier in the chain when source level varies substantially. OBS recommends placing it near the beginning of the filter chain. A steady ambience recording may not need one: do not add compression automatically if it changes the natural sound without solving a real level problem. The limiter remains the final ceiling.

Configure the YouTube encoder and test the actual stream

  1. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, connect OBS using the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. Keep the key private.
  2. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as audio codecs. Its recommended advanced settings include 44.1 kHz for stereo and 128 kbps for stereo audio. These are encoder settings, not instructions for how loud the waterfall should sound.
  3. Run a test using the same footage and audio you intend to broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream.
  4. Listen to the preview and test playback. Check for distorted splashes, silence, abrupt level changes at the loop seam, and unwanted noise. Watch the OBS peak meter during the loudest passages.
  5. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. YouTube recommends previewing and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.

If the meter hits the clipping ceiling or playback distorts, lower the source level and retest. If peaks remain below the ceiling but the stream sounds unnaturally compressed, revisit the compressor or limiter settings; peak control should not make the ambience pump or lose its natural variation.

Plan continuity and the 24-hour archive

A continuous broadcast needs a continuity plan: decide how the encoder will stay connected, who will check stream health, and what should happen if the stream stops. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video while live; do not assume that a stream will need no attention simply because the video loops.

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will receive a complete automatic archive. If you need a full-day recording, plan a separate recording or archive workflow and verify the result rather than relying on automatic archiving for the entire stream.
