How to Stream a 24/7 Study With Me Playlist From a Raspberry Pi

A Raspberry Pi can play study footage, but YouTube Live needs a separately configured encoder. Set it up, test upload capacity and plan for stream interruptions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use a Raspberry Pi to play a study-with-me playlist and send it to YouTube Live, but playback and live encoding are separate jobs: VLC can play files on Raspberry Pi OS, while YouTube requires an encoder feed configured with a stream URL and stream key. The official guidance does not establish which Pi model can encode a particular resolution continuously, so test your exact setup before relying on it for a 24/7 broadcast.

What you need to make the stream work

  • A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS, with local study footage or other media you are authorized to broadcast.
  • A playback method for the playlist and an encoder configured to send its output to YouTube Live. VLC playback alone is not a verified YouTube encoder setup.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • A reliable power source and internet connection with enough upload capacity for the outgoing stream.

A “24/7” stream describes your planned schedule, not guaranteed uptime. The Pi, power, network, media playback and encoder all have to keep working. The Raspberry Pi documentation confirms playback options, but does not provide a tested end-to-end recipe or model-level continuous encoding benchmark.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi and playlist

Check which Raspberry Pi OS edition you have

The full Raspberry Pi OS image includes VLC. Raspberry Pi documents opening media in the desktop interface or playing it from the command line with vlc or cvlc. Raspberry Pi OS Lite does not include VLC by default; its documentation gives this command for installing command-line playback components:

  • CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
  • Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized

These instructions establish local playback capability, not that VLC by itself can produce a properly configured YouTube Live feed. See Raspberry Pi’s video playback documentation.

Organize media you can broadcast

Put the files you intend to play in a known location and decide what viewers will see and hear: for example, prerecorded study footage, a desk scene, or a designed visual with a timer. These are production choices, not built-in Raspberry Pi or YouTube playlist features. Use original footage and audio or content for which you have broadcast rights.

Before planning a continuous run, verify that your chosen playback and encoder arrangement can repeat or advance through your media as intended. The official playback instructions do not establish a universal playlist configuration for every Pi installation.

Enable YouTube Live and connect an encoder

  1. Activate live streaming early. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable it.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create a stream or select one, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
  3. Enter those details in your encoder. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or expose it in a recording or public screenshot. YouTube’s encoder setup explains the connection flow at YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  4. Choose settings supported by both the encoder and your workload. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.
  5. Start with a test broadcast. Test audio and motion similar to the planned stream, check YouTube’s stream health, and confirm the picture and sound before announcing a long session.

YouTube’s current encoder recommendations accessed in 2026 include H.264 at 5–14 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 3–8 Mbps for 720p/30 fps. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not evidence that a particular Raspberry Pi model can encode continuously at those settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Consult its live encoder settings and select settings your complete setup can sustain.

Size the upload connection and plan for interruptions

Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload headroom above the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream; the connection must still have enough capacity for other network use. A disruption can break the stream, and a wired connection may be worth considering where available, but it does not eliminate outages. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its network guidance.

  • Run a speed test close to the location and network you will use for the broadcast.
  • Use a bitrate appropriate to the tested upload capacity and the encoder’s demonstrated performance.
  • Keep the Pi and networking equipment powered, and arrange a way to notice a stalled or ended broadcast.
  • Test playback, encoder output, audio, stream health and recovery before depending on a long session.

There is no official model-specific evidence here to support a blanket recommendation for a Pi board or resolution. A short successful test is useful, but it does not prove that your chosen setup will remain stable for days.

Understand YouTube archives and copyright checks

Plan around the 12-hour archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete replay. If a complete archive matters, plan shorter sessions or separate broadcast periods, and check YouTube’s current behavior before the event. The archive guidance is in YouTube’s encoder setup documentation.

Clear rights to every visible and audible element

YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If YouTube identifies third-party material, it may show a placeholder, warn you to stop streaming it, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or terminate it in connection with a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. A license may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Details are in YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Practical response
You cannot start a live stream Whether live streaming has been enabled for the channel, especially on first use. Complete YouTube’s activation process and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed Whether the correct stream URL and stream key were copied into the encoder, and whether its connection settings match the selected YouTube stream. Recheck the values in Live Control Room and the encoder, then reconnect. Keep the stream key private.
Video is unstable or the stream disconnects Upload capacity, bitrate, network interruptions, Pi power and whether playback or encoding has stalled. Reduce the outgoing bitrate if needed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom, and test the complete setup again. No single check guarantees uninterrupted service.
The archive is missing part of a long broadcast Whether the stream ran for 12 hours or more. For a replay that matters, schedule broadcasts under 12 hours rather than relying on a single day-long archive.
A live stream is interrupted despite having a music license Whether YouTube detected third-party content and whether the rights holder allowlisted the channel in Content ID. Review the rights-holder arrangement and ask about channel allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent live interruptions.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded study videos live on YouTube without leaving a Pi or another computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.

  • Your home computer can stay off; StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud.
  • Each slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
  • It attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.

StreamNeo is YouTube-only. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
