Yes—you can use a Raspberry Pi to loop a prerecorded university course and send it to a live-streaming platform. But a working setup is not the same as a proven 24/7 service: test the actual video, Pi model, streaming software, destination, internet connection, cooling, power and recovery behavior before relying on it.
This walkthrough uses YouTube Live for its encoder settings and requirements. A private university network or another platform may use a different ingest method and access controls.
Before you begin: confirm rights, destination and access
Decide who should be able to watch: the public, people with a link, or an audience restricted through a university system. Choose a platform that supports your intended access model and accepts an encoder stream; the YouTube setup below is an example, not a guarantee that YouTube is appropriate for a private course.
Before broadcasting, check with the university, lecturer or recording owner that you have permission to rebroadcast the course video and audio in the chosen setting. YouTube states, “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance describes platform rules; it cannot determine whether a particular course recording is cleared for you to stream.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi
Choose boot storage and a headless setup
For a monitor-free host, install Raspberry Pi OS and enable a way to connect remotely, such as SSH, during setup. Raspberry Pi’s current getting-started documentation recommends at least 8 GB of boot storage for Raspberry Pi OS Lite, which is command-line-only; its desktop editions have a recommended minimum of 32 GB. These are OS boot-storage recommendations, not estimates for the course file. Store the recording on boot media only if it has enough free space, or use suitable external storage.
The headless setup still needs boot media, a network connection and a suitable power supply. A monitor is not required once the Pi is installed and reachable over the network.
Use a power supply matched to your Pi
Raspberry Pi’s current documentation specifies a recommended 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5 and 15 W USB-C for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 400. Peripherals affect power demand, and voltage loss in removable cables can matter. Check the recommendation for your exact model rather than assuming one supply fits every generation. Raspberry Pi advises: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.” See the Raspberry Pi getting-started guide.

Prepare and loop the course video
Start with a file the Pi can play reliably
Use a local copy of the recording in a format your selected playback and streaming path supports. Raspberry Pi OS includes VLC, and Raspberry Pi documents hardware-accelerated playback in that environment. That makes VLC a plausible playback option, but it does not establish that a particular Pi can continuously play, encode and stream your specific file.
Where the prepared media can be passed through without re-encoding, try that first: it avoids adding an encoding workload to the Pi. If conversion or live encoding is required, test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec and audio settings on the target hardware. The cited platform settings below describe YouTube’s ingest guidance, not a guarantee of Pi performance.
Looping with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an option to loop an input indefinitely. For example, a playback pipeline can use this option before the input file:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -i course.mp4 …
The ellipsis is not a complete streaming command: output URL, stream key, codecs and encoding or passthrough options depend on the platform and media. Do not copy an incomplete command as a production setup. Check the FFmpeg manual and your destination’s current encoder instructions when assembling the full command.
Configure a YouTube Live encoder stream
Meet YouTube’s channel requirements
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction within the preceding 90 days. Its live content must follow Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm the channel is eligible and review YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements before planning a continuous broadcast.

| H.264 output target | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 42 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 encoder settings, not a universal internet-speed requirement. Your sustained upload capacity should exceed the selected stream bitrate with headroom, and a speed test alone does not establish that the connection will remain stable around the clock. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps; choose settings the Pi and the prepared file can actually sustain.
Protect and enter the stream key
Create or schedule the YouTube live stream, then retrieve its stream key from the live control room and enter it in the encoder’s destination settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not publish it in a command screenshot, shared document or public support post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it using YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make the setup recoverable, then test it
A player that loops forever does not by itself provide a dependable 24/7 service. The Pi, power, network, playback process, encoder and destination can each fail independently. Before relying on the stream, run an extended trial with the actual course file and intended output settings.

- Test local playback. Play the complete file on the Pi and check that audio and video remain synchronized and that playback does not stall.
- Test the live ingest. Send the intended output to YouTube and confirm the control room receives a healthy stream at the chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Test restart behavior. Reboot the Pi and verify that the remote-access path, player and streaming process return without someone manually opening a desktop app.
- Simulate a network interruption. During a controlled trial, interrupt and restore connectivity, then check whether the encoder reconnects and whether YouTube receives a healthy signal again.
- Inspect logs and temperatures. Review player and encoder logs for repeated errors; ensure the Pi has adequate ventilation and that its power connection is secure.
- Set up monitoring and recovery. Decide how you will notice a failed stream and restart or investigate it. A process manager can restart a crashed process, but that alone does not guarantee the full stream will recover.
Raspberry Pi’s camera and network-streaming examples are not validation of a prerecorded-course-to-YouTube deployment. No cited official reference certifies 24/7 uptime for a particular Pi model and course file; sustained testing of your complete setup is essential.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Stream key, destination URL, ingest protocol or channel eligibility | Check the current YouTube encoder instructions, confirm the key and RTMPS settings, and verify the channel can stream live. |
| Video stutters or the connection drops | Upload capacity, network stability or an output bitrate the connection cannot sustain | Check sustained upload performance, use wired networking where practical, and test a lower supported output setting. |
| Playback stalls or the Pi struggles | Media compatibility, decoding or encoding load, storage or heat | Test the file locally, try a compatible prepared file, avoid re-encoding if the workflow permits, and check ventilation and logs. |
| Stream fails to return after a reboot or interruption | Startup configuration, process failure or reconnect behavior | Verify each process starts after reboot, inspect logs, and repeat a controlled interruption test. Do not assume a service restart equals a recovered YouTube stream. |
| Course is visible to the wrong audience | Destination visibility or access-control configuration | Review the stream’s audience and privacy settings before sharing it, and use a university-approved platform if YouTube’s controls do not meet the requirement. |
Cost and operating trade-offs
A Pi-based setup puts the always-on device, network connection, power and ongoing administration at your location. Consider whether the internet line has stable upload capacity, whether the Pi can play or pass through the file without heavy encoding, and who will monitor updates, logs and failures. The cited material does not establish a comparable ownership cost or a guaranteed uptime figure; include your local power and connectivity costs when deciding.
