OBS Studio can loop a recorded worship video or playlist into a YouTube livestream, but looping a file is not the same as guaranteeing an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Before you go live, clear the music and recording rights for streaming and any archive, test the setup, and plan how someone will monitor and recover the stream.
Choose a single recording or a playlist
Use one file if it repeats cleanly from its final frame and sound back to its opening. Choose a playlist when the service includes multiple recordings or when you need a deliberate sequence. In either case, review transitions for gaps, black frames, abrupt audio cuts, or unintended silence. If you shuffle tracks, make sure that order remains appropriate for worship.

OBS supports common local video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. Test the exact files you plan to use; a format being supported does not establish that a particular file’s audio, video, or transitions will behave as intended.

Rights are a prerequisite, not a technical setting. JLicense’s FAQ says that a religious-service exception does not extend to broadcasting, webcasting, transmitting, live-streaming, sharing, podcasting, or recording and archiving worship-service parts that contain copyrighted works. Those uses require a license or written permission from each rights holder. JLicense serves the international Jewish community, and the Rabbinical Assembly’s congregation streaming guide identifies JLicense annual and limited licenses for covered songs.

Check the actual works and uses with the relevant rights holders or licensing provider. Confirm the song, arrangement, lyrics, sound recording, platform, territories, archive duration, and license period. Permission to perform a song live does not necessarily cover replaying a commercial recording, and a license for one destination or use should not be assumed to cover every other one. Keep written confirmation of the rights granted.
YouTube separately requires the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music rights. It scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even a broadcaster that says it is licensed can encounter enforcement if the rights holder has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask about allowlisting where relevant; platform enforcement and your permission from a rights holder are separate matters. See YouTube’s terms and its copyright guidance for live streams.

Set up a loop in OBS Studio
- Prepare the computer and OBS. Install OBS Studio and keep the video files on the computer that will run the stream. Open OBS and select the scene you want to broadcast. OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes the Auto-Configuration Wizard, which considers the computer’s hardware and network conditions. Run it, then check the resulting settings and test before going live.
- Add one recording. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, enable Local File, and browse to the video. Turn on Loop so playback starts again after it reaches the end. The file must remain available at its selected location while OBS uses it.
- Or add a playlist. Add a VLC Video Source and select the files in the order you want. Enable Loop Playlist so OBS repeats the list after the final item. Check the transition between each pair of files and the return from the last item to the first.
- Set the stream destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key supplied through YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a password: do not show it in a recording or share it with people who do not operate the channel. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Check picture, sound, and output. Confirm the preview shows the intended video and the OBS audio meters respond to the intended program audio. Use OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point rather than assuming its choices fit every file or connection. Set output within your stable upload capacity and YouTube’s current limits; the exact bitrate and resolution depend on the intended stream quality and connection, so do not choose a value that the venue cannot sustain.
- Test from the intended source. Start a short test stream and check the YouTube player for correct image and sound. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, silent or distorted audio, and problems at loop seams. Do not rely on the setup for a continuous service until the test succeeds.
Make the connection and 24/7 operations resilient
Use wired Ethernet where practical. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, updated September 30, 2024, says Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. It also advises reducing bitrate to fit stable upload speed and platform limits, and notes that network cables, routers, network cards, and other network devices can fail. A cable helps only if the rest of the connection is reliable; it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service.
The Rabbinical Assembly guide from 2020 gives 4–6 Mbps as a minimum upload-speed baseline to avoid overly pixelated video or choppy audio. Treat that as a guide’s baseline, not a guarantee: the stream’s resolution and bitrate, other network use, and connection stability all affect results. Test upload stability at the actual venue while other expected network activity is present.

- Arrange for a person to check the broadcast, especially after setup changes or an interruption.
- Decide who can restart OBS, the computer, router, or stream, and how they will know when to do so.
- Plan for power or internet outages. OBS looping does not itself restart a failed computer or restore a broken connection.
- Review what YouTube will archive and who can access it; confirm the relevant rights cover the archive as well as the live stream.

Troubleshoot the common failures
- The video stops at the end. For a single Media Source, check Loop. For a VLC Video Source, check Loop Playlist and confirm the intended files are in the list.
- The stream buffers or drops frames. Use Ethernet if available, reduce bitrate to a level the stable upload connection can sustain, and check the router, cable, network card, and other network equipment. Test again at the venue.
- The stream has no sound or the wrong sound. Check the OBS audio meters while the recording plays, confirm the source includes the intended audio, and inspect the YouTube test playback before relying on the live stream.
- YouTube interrupts the stream or shows a placeholder. Review the platform’s notice and the rights for the specific song or recording. Confirm that streaming and archiving are covered, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting if the channel is licensed.
- The stream does not recover after an outage. A local OBS setup depends on the computer, power, software session, and network. Follow the congregation’s restart plan and verify the stream in YouTube after restarting; a loop setting alone does not provide automatic recovery.

For any platform or embedded destination, separately assess discovery and playback needs, archive behavior, rights and territory scope, audience privacy, moderation, and Content ID procedures. Do not assume a license or platform terms for one destination settle the requirements for another.
