You can run a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel from a Mac mini by using OBS Studio to send a looping program feed to YouTube Live. The Mac must stay awake, OBS must remain connected, and the internet connection must sustain the stream’s bitrate. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, so plan how to end and restart long-running broadcasts rather than assuming one 24-hour stream will be saved as a replay.
Before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for livestreaming: YouTube says first-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before launch day. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A Mac mini that can handle your actual workload: The precise model, media format, resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity matter. Confirm current OBS system requirements and test the intended configuration; no particular Mac mini model is established as sufficient for every stream.
- OBS Studio and your prerecorded program: Prepare the video files and any title or branding elements you plan to show. The workflow below assumes prerecorded video, not a live camera feed.
- A stable internet connection and power: A wired connection is a practical way to reduce wireless variability, but it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. Consider how you will respond to a power, network or application interruption.
- An audience designation that reflects the content: YouTube requires creators to identify whether content is made for kids. A children’s channel should not be marked general audience merely because parents or other adults may also watch.

Enable livestreaming and create the event
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the livestream. If this is the channel’s first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation. For a scheduled stream, keep the event available in Live Control Room so you can check the encoder preview and use its Go live control after OBS connects.

Create a scene for the prerecorded program
In OBS, make a scene and add a media source for the video you want to play. Set the source to loop if the same file should repeat, or arrange the program as a playlist if your workflow calls for multiple items. Add titles or branding only if needed. Preview playback, check that the loop behaves as intended, and confirm that audio is audible without clipping. OBS’s configuration depends on the files and scene you use; there is no single source setting established for every Mac or media format.

Connect OBS to the YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open the stream’s encoder settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter or select the required connection details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, share it publicly, or include it in a recording or screenshot. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Start and verify the broadcast
Start streaming in OBS. For an immediate-start workflow, YouTube says starting the encoder begins the live stream and creates its watch page. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, check the picture and sound, then use Go live there. Confirm that the public watch page shows the intended program before leaving the setup unattended.
Choose settings the connection can sustain
There is no universal bitrate that can be responsibly specified without knowing your chosen resolution, frame rate, encoder settings and the upload connection’s real performance. Choose a bitrate appropriate for the output you intend to send, then test the stream under the same conditions you expect during normal operation. A setting that exceeds the connection’s sustained upload capacity can lead to dropped frames or instability.

- Use a resolution and frame rate your Mac mini can encode reliably alongside the actual scene and media.
- Set the OBS bitrate to a level the available upload connection can sustain consistently, not just briefly.
- Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection indicator during a test. If the counter rises and the indicator turns yellow or red, OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot keep up with. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Watch YouTube’s preview and stream health as well as OBS. A successful start does not establish that the stream will remain healthy unattended.
Keep the Mac mini awake and plan for interruptions
Prevent automatic sleep
On a desktop Mac, review Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off if that option is available. Menu labels and settings can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Apple notes that preventing sleep may increase power consumption. Check Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide for the Mac you are using.
Know what can stop a local stream
With OBS running on the Mac mini, continuity depends on the Mac, power, internet connection, OBS process and stream configuration all remaining healthy. OBS’s dropped-frame indicator helps diagnose connection trouble, but neither OBS nor a wired connection guarantees uptime. Decide who will notice an interruption and how they will restart the encoder and verify the YouTube preview.

Handle archives and long broadcasts deliberately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish the archive behavior of streams longer than 12 hours, so do not promise that a single 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one replay. If replay availability matters, plan and test a workflow that ends and restarts or schedules segments, check the resulting recordings in YouTube Studio, and consider whether you also need a local recording. Verify the current behavior in Studio before relying on it.
Set the kids’ channel audience accurately
In YouTube Studio, set the stream’s audience designation to match its intended audience and content. YouTube says relevant factors include the subject matter, child actors, characters or toys, language, activities, songs, stories and advertising. The creator is responsible for making the designation. An intentionally child-directed channel should not be classified as general audience simply because it is also suitable for families. The right setting depends on the actual content and applicable circumstances; this guide does not determine the legal status of an individual channel. Choose local OBS or cloud playout
Running OBS locally gives you direct control over scenes and source media, while making the stream dependent on your Mac mini, its power, your connection and the running OBS session. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists cloud services for continuous streaming of prerecorded video, including Gyre and Upstream.
