To stream a prerecorded 1080p loop continuously from a Linode VPS, run an encoder on the server, connect it to the YouTube Live ingest URL with your stream key, and keep the VPS process running. For YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, use 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60, with constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Before committing to 24/7 operation, check that your Linode instance can sustain the upload and that your account’s current transfer allowance covers the data the stream will send.
Choose 1080p30 or 1080p60
“1080p” describes resolution, not frame rate. The right target depends on the source and how much motion it contains. A mostly static scene or slow-moving loop may be adequate at 30 fps; fast movement can benefit from 60 fps, at the cost of a higher recommended bitrate and greater network use.

These are YouTube’s recommended ingest settings, not a guarantee of the throughput available from a particular VPS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Create a YouTube live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then select an existing stream key or create one.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key. Use the values shown in Live Control Room rather than relying on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. YouTube’s interface and ingest details can change.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not expose it in a public script, screenshot, repository, or shared terminal output. YouTube documents reusing a custom key and resetting it if it is compromised. See YouTube’s stream key instructions.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends the encrypted connection. Use the actual RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room. RTMP is a fallback only if your encoder or configuration cannot use RTMPS and you understand the transport-security trade-off. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Configure the VPS encoder
Install and run an encoder compatible with your Linux distribution and source file. Configure the output for YouTube ingestion using the URL and key from Live Control Room. The applicable YouTube settings are:

- Video codec: H.264.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Bitrate: 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60, as recommended by YouTube.
- Keyframes: every two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS when supported by the encoder and the supplied ingest endpoint.
Set the output frame rate to match the choice you made for the loop. Confirm the encoder’s settings and behavior for your specific FFmpeg build, operating system, media file, and YouTube endpoint before relying on it. An exact copy-and-paste loop-and-reconnect command is not provided here: its correctness depends on those details, and a command that loops a file does not necessarily handle a dropped connection or restart safely.

Estimate the cost of running continuously
A 24/7 stream uses outbound network transfer for as long as it runs. The bitrate gives you a planning baseline: at a steady 10 Mbps, the video payload alone is about 108 GB per day, or about 3.24 TB over 30 days; at 12 Mbps, it is about 129.6 GB per day, or about 3.89 TB over 30 days. These are arithmetic estimates from the configured bitrate, using decimal gigabytes and assuming uninterrupted transmission; actual usage can differ because of stream overhead, bitrate variation, interruptions, and other server traffic.
Before choosing or keeping a Linode plan, check your current account billing and network-transfer terms, as well as the instance’s available outbound throughput. The bitrate YouTube recommends does not establish what a particular Linode instance can sustain. YouTube also advises that total stream bitrate must fit within the available upload bandwidth. A Linode community discussion raises the same concern for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but its older figures do not establish current quotas, prices, or a plan recommendation: Linode community discussion.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Start a private or unlisted test. Use the intended file, settings, and ingest path before announcing a public stream.
- Check the YouTube preview. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate match your target and that audio, if present, is behaving as expected.
- Inspect stream health. Watch for dropped frames, interruptions, or warnings in Live Control Room. Test representative motion and audio, not only a static opening frame.
- Observe it long enough to catch failures. A short successful preview does not prove that a VPS connection or process will remain stable indefinitely. Check the stream and server again after the test has been running.
