How to Stream 1080p Video to YouTube with FFmpeg Without Re-encoding

FFmpeg’s -c copy sends existing encoded streams without re-encoding, but it cannot make a file 1080p or change its bitrate, frame rate, or codecs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use FFmpeg’s -c copy mode to send a compatible, already-encoded 1080p file to YouTube without decoding and re-encoding its video or audio. It preserves the source: it cannot turn a lower-resolution file into 1080p, change its frame rate, or adjust its bitrate. First check the file’s codecs and encoding settings, then send it to the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room and verify the ingest in a test.

Before you start: confirm the source is ready

Streamcopy is suitable only if the source already has the picture and encoding characteristics you need. FFmpeg’s -c copy copies encoded packets; it does not resize, filter, or convert them. The command below is a practical starting template, not a guarantee for every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube ingest configuration.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Confirm the file is already 1920×1080 at the frame rate you intend to stream. Copying cannot scale or change frame rate.
  • Codecs: YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Streamcopy cannot convert an unsupported codec to an accepted one. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
  • Bitrate and keyframes: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Streamcopy retains the source’s existing encoding; it does not apply these settings.
  • Container and muxing: The input’s streams must be muxable into the output format. FFmpeg warns that streamcopy can fail if information required by the target container is unavailable; changing the container alone will not fix an incompatible codec or stream property.
  • Destination: You need the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.

What YouTube recommends for 1080p

YouTube Help’s current encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026, gives the following H.264 guidance. These are YouTube’s recommendations, not values that FFmpeg applies when you use -c copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
H.264 stream Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

The two-second keyframe interval is recommended, with a four-second maximum. Because streamcopy preserves the source encoding, check whether the file’s bitrate and keyframe interval suit the intended ingest. YouTube’s live guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension of RTMP. YouTube also transcodes received live streams into multiple viewing formats; that happens downstream and does not mean FFmpeg re-encodes your file on its way to YouTube.

Send the file with FFmpeg streamcopy

  1. Get the destination from YouTube: In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current interface.
  2. Run the command: Replace input.mp4 with the source file and the quoted destination with the stream URL followed by your stream key. Use the exact values YouTube provides.
    ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? -c copy -f flv "<YouTube stream URL>/<stream key>"

-re reads the file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. -i selects the input. The two -map options select the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream; the question mark makes the audio selection optional. -c copy copies the selected streams without decoding or encoding. -f flv specifies the output muxer used by this template.

  3. Check Live Control Room: Confirm YouTube receives the stream and inspect stream health and any messages before relying on it for an event. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement.
  4. Stop when finished: Stop the FFmpeg process to end the send. If the destination string or key is wrong, check it against Live Control Room and replace any exposed key there.

FFmpeg documents streamcopy as copying packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding; it is fast and avoids generational quality loss, but may fail when required information is missing from the target container. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

When streamcopy is the wrong choice

Use an encoding workflow instead if you need to change the picture or encoding. Scaling to 1920×1080, adding an overlay, converting frame rate, applying color processing, or changing codecs requires decoding and processing; filters cannot operate on streams being copied. Transcoding allows those changes but is no longer a no-re-encoding workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If FFmpeg rejects the output or YouTube does not accept the ingest, first compare the file’s codecs, stream properties, container compatibility, bitrate, and keyframe interval with the destination requirements. Simply changing -f or the file extension cannot make incompatible encoded streams suitable.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The stream is not 1080p: The source may not be 1920×1080. -c copy preserves its encoded resolution; prepare a 1080p source using an encoding workflow if needed.
  • FFmpeg reports a muxing or output error: The copied stream may not be compatible with the selected output container, or required stream information may be unavailable. Check the source’s codecs and properties; container changes alone may not resolve the issue.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Check the source’s bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s recommendations for the intended resolution and frame rate. Streamcopy cannot retune them.
  • YouTube receives no stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, and confirm the command is still running. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
  • No audio arrives: The command maps the first audio stream only if one exists. Confirm the source has an audio stream and that its codec is among those listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running rather than operate FFmpeg on your own computer, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
