Start with the installation manual for the exact meter and identify the upstream disturbance. If the specified straight-pipe run will not fit, use only a flow conditioner approved for that meter and configuration; its type, position, and operating limits matter. A generic straightener is not a universal fix.
Why flow swirls before a meter
Elbows, valves, reducers, tees, and other upstream fittings can disturb the velocity profile. An elbow can produce swirl, while a valve or reducer can create an uneven profile; multiple fittings and their orientation can change what the meter sees. The needed run and remedy therefore depend on the meter technology, exact model, and upstream layout.

A flow conditioner is intended to modify the flow profile, but it does not make installation geometry irrelevant. A meter maker may specify a particular device, placement, and remaining straight-run distances. Swirl is also only one possible source of a bad reading: pulsation, entrained gas, contamination, incorrect installation, or operation outside the meter’s limits can cause problems too.

How to choose a remedy
- Identify the meter. Record its technology, model, line size, fluid, and operating conditions. Get the current installation manual for that model.
- Map the upstream piping. Note the fittings, their distances from the meter, and their orientation. Distinguish, for example, a single elbow from double elbows in or out of plane, a throttling valve, reducer, tee, diffuser, or regulator.
- Check the installation table. Compare the actual straight run with the model’s requirements for that specific disturbance. Do not apply a rule of thumb from another meter type.
- If the run is too short, ask the manufacturer about approved conditioners. Confirm the allowed type and exact location for the configuration. Some arrangements retain specified distances and impose velocity limits.
- Check physical and process compatibility. Verify pressure and temperature ratings, materials, line size, connections, maintenance or cleaning needs, and pressure-drop implications. Pressure loss cannot be calculated without the installation details and device specification.
- Commission and validate the measurement. Follow the applicable meter and process procedures. Do not assume a conditioner has corrected an error until installation and measurement have been checked.
What the published installation examples show
These figures are manufacturer-specific examples, not universal straight-run rules. D means internal pipe diameter; DN means nominal diameter. Placement labels in a manufacturer’s table matter.

Conditioners are not interchangeable
“Flow straightener” can refer to different devices. A vane assembly for a turbine meter, a perforated plate, a conditioning orifice, and a meter-specific conditioner configuration have different designs and installation requirements. Choose by the meter maker’s approved arrangement rather than by the generic name.
- Vane straightener: May be appropriate where the meter instructions allow it. Badger Meter describes its Cox product as a six-vane swirl eliminator for turbine-meter use. Its listed range is 12.7–50.8 mm (1/2–2 in), its construction is 300-series stainless steel, and its maximum listed temperature is 37.8 °C (100 °F). - Perforated-plate conditioner: Consider it only where the meter maker specifies a compatible plate and arrangement. The cited reduced-run example is for vortex-meter guidance; do not transfer its approximate distances to another meter.
- Conditioning orifice plate: A possible option for applicable differential-pressure measurement. Emerson’s two-diameter claim is specific to its Rosemount conditioning-orifice technology, not a general promise about orifice installations.
- Meter-specific conditioner: Use the configuration, placement, and operating limits in that meter’s manual. The FLOWSIC600 example, for instance, has a stated gas-velocity limit.
When to change the piping instead
If space allows, relocating the meter or upstream fittings to meet the meter maker’s straight-run requirement may be the simpler installation choice. If space is constrained, a conditioner may help only when the manufacturer approves its type and placement for the disturbance. The cited installation examples do not establish a universal cost or lifecycle winner between piping changes and conditioners.

What to verify before installation
- Exact meter technology and model, and the current manual revision.
- Fluid and operating envelope, including temperature, pressure, and velocity.
- Line size, material, pressure rating, connections, and available installation space.
- Upstream fitting type, orientation, and distance, plus required downstream run.
- Approved conditioner design and location, if one is specified.
- Pressure-drop impact and access for inspection, maintenance, or cleaning.
- Other potential causes of inaccurate readings, including pulsation, entrained gas, contamination, or installation errors.
