Best USB-C Hubs for Monitors, Storage, and Peripherals: What to Check Before You Buy

The right USB-C hub depends first on what your laptop’s USB-C port can do—not just on the shape of its connector. For a monitor, the host port must support video transport such as DisplayPort Alt Mode; for laptop charging through the hub, the host and hub must also support USB Power Delivery. Once those checks pass, match the hub’s display outputs, USB speeds, Ethernet, card readers, and charging capacity to the gear you plan to connect.

Will a USB-C hub work with your laptop?

Possibly, but USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed set of features. A laptop’s USB-C port may support data and charging without supporting video. For a hub’s display output to work, the host port and connection must support a video mode such as DisplayPort Alt Mode. Check the specifications for your exact laptop model and the hub’s compatibility notes before buying.

VESA’s FAQ frames the key question as: “How will I know if the Type-C connector on my device supports DisplayPort over USB-C?” Its guidance explains that DisplayPort Alt Mode allows USB-C to carry DisplayPort audio and video. A compatible source can use an adapter to connect to a monitor’s HDMI or other supported input. VESA’s DisplayPort over USB-C FAQ is a useful starting point; the laptop manufacturer’s specification is still the place to confirm the capabilities of your particular port.

Charging is a separate check. If you want the hub to charge the laptop, confirm that the laptop’s USB-C port supports Power Delivery (PD), and compare the hub’s maximum PD input with its actual laptop pass-through output. The charger’s rating and the laptop’s own charging limits also affect what the computer receives.

  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

Hub, dock, or adapter cable: what is the difference?

Retail names are inconsistent, so choose by function rather than label. In VESA terminology, a USB hub handles USB connections; a display-capable dock can combine display output with USB hub functions and power delivery through one host connection. USB-IF likewise describes a USB4-based dock as a USB4 hub with additional non-USB connections or user-facing functions, such as display and storage. VESA’s FAQ and USB-IF’s USB4 overview explain these distinctions.

  • USB-C hub or dock with video: A fit when you want to connect a monitor alongside USB devices, storage, or other peripherals. Verify video support on both the host and the hub.
  • USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter cable: A narrower option if you need only one compatible DisplayPort monitor connection. VESA recommends a DP-certified adapter cable for a DisplayPort display. It does not add USB ports, Ethernet, or card readers.

Check these compatibility details before choosing

  1. Confirm the laptop’s video output. Look up the exact model and port specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode or another supported video mode. Do not assume a USB-C-shaped port can drive a display.
  2. Match the monitor setup. Count the displays you want to use and check each output type, resolution, and refresh-rate limit. Two video connectors on a hub do not guarantee two independent extended displays on every laptop or operating system; confirm the host’s display limits and the hub’s compatibility notes.
  3. Match data ports to your devices. Check whether you need USB-A, USB-C data ports, or both, and compare their stated speeds with the requirements of your drives and accessories. A USB-C port on a hub is not necessarily a laptop-charging input or a display output.
  4. Check network and card-reader needs. If you use wired networking, confirm Ethernet is included and note its listed speed. For camera or other removable media, check whether the hub has SD, microSD, or both.
  5. Verify charging in both directions. Compare the hub’s maximum PD input with the laptop pass-through output it specifies, then check the laptop’s charging requirements and the charger you plan to use. An input rating is not the same as the power delivered to the laptop.

Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1), A8383 HDMI up to 4K@60Hz; 1 Gbps Ethernet; USB data ports; SD and microSD readers; up to 85W laptop pass-through from up to 100W PD input. Anker product specifications. The laptop’s USB-C port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video and PD for charging. Check the laptop’s display and charging limits.
Anker 565 USB-C Hub (11-in-1), A8388 HDMI and DisplayPort outputs listed up to 4K@60Hz, plus Ethernet, USB data, and SD and microSD readers. Anker product specifications. Two output connectors do not establish that a particular laptop can drive two independent displays. Check the laptop and operating-system display limits.
USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapter cable VESA documents adapters for compatible USB-C DisplayPort sources and recommends a DP-certified cable for a DisplayPort monitor. VESA guidance. It requires a compatible video-capable host and adds no USB ports, Ethernet, or card readers.

Which option fits your setup?

  • One HDMI monitor plus everyday peripherals: The Anker 555’s listed HDMI, USB data, Ethernet, and card-reader features make it an example to compare if you have confirmed host video support. Its stated charging figures describe up to 85W laptop pass-through from up to 100W PD input, not a guarantee that every laptop will receive that amount.
  • Need both HDMI and DisplayPort connectors: The Anker 565 lists both output types. Choose it only after confirming the laptop can drive the display configuration you intend to use; connector count alone does not establish that.
  • Need only a single DisplayPort monitor connection: A DP-certified USB-C-to-DisplayPort cable may be simpler than a hub, provided the laptop’s port supports DisplayPort over USB-C.

These specifications are published by the manufacturers and VESA; they do not establish comparative reliability, hands-on performance, pricing, or current stock. Product listings and compatibility details can change.
