How to Store XRP Safely in a Self-Custody Wallet

In XRP self-custody, the seed or private key controls the account. Compare software, hardware, and offline signing, and learn how to protect recovery material.

To store XRP safely in a self-custody wallet, protect the account’s seed or private key: it is the authority that can sign transactions. Keep the master secret offline, use a trusted wallet or signing device, and make a secure recovery copy. If you lose the secret, the XRP Ledger has no administrator who can restore access.

What self-custody means for XRP

A wallet manages the keys used to sign transactions; XRP and account records reside on the XRP Ledger. In self-custody, you control the account’s signing secret and take responsibility for generating, protecting, and recovering it.

Anyone who knows the account’s seed or private key can create signatures with the same authority as the owner, according to the XRP Ledger documentation on cryptographic keys. The ledger has no recovery process if you lose your keys. Treat the secret as control of the account, not merely as a password.

Choose a storage approach that fits how you use XRP

The right approach depends on how often you transact, how well you can protect a recovery copy, and how comfortable you are managing devices and procedures. The XRP Ledger documentation describes software wallets, hardware wallets, and offline signing; it does not establish one as best for every user.

Approach Key exposure and convenience Main responsibilities
Software wallet Keys are stored digitally on your device, making access convenient but leaving them exposed to device or software compromise. Use trusted software and protect the device, its access credentials, and any recovery copy.
Hardware wallet A physical device stores the signing key and can be disconnected when not in use. Protect the device and recovery material, verify transaction details on the device, and confirm the exact model supports XRP Ledger and the transaction types you need.
Air-gapped or offline signing Keys stay on a machine disconnected from the network; signed transactions are transferred to an online machine for submission. Secure the offline machine physically, source its software carefully, and manage transaction transfers without introducing compromised software or media.

Set up and protect your wallet

  1. Get wallet software or device-management software from its official provider. Generate the keys in a trusted environment. The XRP Ledger warns that compromised applications can expose secrets; do not follow links from unsolicited messages or use a wallet site you cannot verify.
  2. Create a recovery copy and keep it private. Record the seed or private key using the wallet’s instructions. Never send it to a person, website, support agent, or online signing service. A third party who knows it can authorize transactions.
  3. Keep the master secret offline where practical. Do not email it, type it into a website, or leave it in plain text on an internet-connected computer. If you must store it digitally, the XRP Ledger advises encryption rather than plain text. For a physical copy, prevent theft, damage, and unauthorized viewing.
  4. Secure the device and your surroundings. A hardware wallet reduces direct exposure of signing keys; it does not remove the need to protect its recovery material, handle the device securely, and review transaction details before approving them.
  5. Check the exact device’s current support before buying or relying on it. Confirm XRP Ledger compatibility and the transaction types supported by that specific model. The XRPL secure-signing documentation names Ledger Nano S as an example of a signing device, but that example does not establish the availability or capabilities of current models.

Can you keep an XRP private key offline?

Yes. The XRP Ledger describes keeping keys on an air-gapped machine or maintaining a secure physical copy. With offline signing, the offline machine signs a transaction and an online machine submits it to the network. This reduces direct network exposure, but it is not automatically safer if the process or equipment is compromised.

  • Prevent unauthorized physical access to the offline machine.
  • Use trusted software and be cautious about software transferred to that machine.
  • Never reuse a potentially compromised transfer drive for the air-gapped machine. In particular, do not connect a drive previously used on a network-connected computer.

Offline signing is best suited to people able to maintain a careful, repeatable process. A mistake in software sourcing or transaction transfer can undermine the isolation it is meant to provide.

When to consider regular keys or multisigning

The XRP Ledger offers account authorization options for users who need more than a single-key setup. They are optional and add configuration work; an error can impair access.

Regular key

You can configure a regular key for routine transactions while keeping the master key offline. If the regular key is compromised, the master key can be used to replace it. This requires careful setup and protection of both keys; it is not a substitute for securing the master secret.

  • 2 XRP COLD STORAGE COINS FOR FLEXIBLE STORAGE - This 2-pack includes two physical XRP cold storage coins, ideal for splitting holdings, keeping one as a backup, or giving one as a gift while maintaining a dedicated XRP-only storage format.
  • NO ELECTRONICS FOR OFFLINE XRP STORAGE - No battery, no Bluetooth, no USB, and no firmware updates. These stainless steel XRP coins are designed for offline cold storage and keep key information separate from internet-connected devices.
  • NO SEED PHRASE AND NO PIN OR PASSWORD - Ballet simplifies XRP cold storage with no 12 or 24-word seed phrase to write down and no PIN or password to remember, making setup easier for beginners and long-term holders.
  • WORKS WITH BALLET CRYPTO APP FOR XRP - Use the Ballet Crypto App for iOS and Android to scan each coin, view the XRP address, load XRP, check balances, and transfer XRP through a guided workflow.
  • TAMPER-EVIDENT SECURITY LAYERS - Each coin includes peel-to-reveal protection that helps provide a clear visual signal if the private key area has been accessed. Once opened to move funds out, the coin should not be reused for secure cold storage.

Multisigning

Multisigning can require signatures from multiple keys, which may be held on separate devices or by different people. It adds setup complexity, transaction costs, and an account reserve requirement. Understand the account configuration and recovery implications before enabling it. See the XRPL multisigning documentation and regular-key documentation.

Account reserve is separate from wallet security

The XRP Ledger account documentation retrieved in 2026 stated a 1 XRP reserve for a funded account. This is an on-ledger requirement, not a wallet fee or a security measure, and the amount can change. Check the live XRP Ledger reserve documentation before funding an account.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sharing a seed or private key with anyone, including someone claiming to be wallet support.
  • Entering the master secret into a website or storing it unencrypted on a connected device.
  • Assuming a hardware wallet makes recovery material or transaction review unimportant.
  • Connecting untrusted software or previously network-used media to an air-gapped machine.
  • Assuming an older device example proves that a current model supports every XRP Ledger transaction you need.
