Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe best way to store winter tires is to clean and dry them, protect them from sunlight, heat, ozone and chemicals, and place them according to whether they are mounted on wheels. Mark each tire’s original position before removal so you can rotate the set correctly next season. Mounted assemblies may be stacked or hung; unmounted tires should stand upright and should not be stacked or hung.
Use a clean, cool, dry indoor location whenever possible. Michelin summarizes the environment this way: “Tires should always be stored in a cool, dry, clean, indoor environment.” A bag can reduce dust and exposure, but it cannot compensate for damp, hot or contaminated storage.

When to remove winter tires
Seasonal changeover should follow your tire and vehicle manufacturers’ guidance and the conditions where you drive. Michelin’s U.S. winter-driving guidance recommends switching from winter tires when temperatures consistently rise above 45°F. That is Michelin’s recommendation, not a universal legal threshold or a rule for every tire, climate or jurisdiction. In areas with unusual cold snaps, mountain conditions or rapidly changing weather, use the guidance supplied for your specific tires and vehicle rather than treating 45°F as an automatic appointment date.
Plan the changeover when you can remove the set carefully, clean it and give it enough time to dry before storage. Rushing wet tires into a closed bag or damp corner defeats the purpose of protecting the rubber.

Record each tire’s position before removal
Before loosening any wheel, record where it was installed: for example, front left, front right, rear left and rear right. A paper label, photograph or diagram is sufficient. Keep the record with the stored set.
Position records let you plan an appropriate rotation at the next installation, subject to the vehicle and tire maker’s instructions. Those instructions take priority because some vehicles, directional tread designs and tire configurations do not permit every rotation pattern. Do not assume that a tire can move to any corner simply because it was removed from a different one.
Marking methods that remain readable
- Write the original position on a durable tag or label attached to the wheel or storage bag.
- Use a diagram showing the vehicle’s front and rear, then identify left and right.
- Take a clear photo of each wheel’s position and keep it with the set’s paperwork.
Do not rely on memory after several months. The purpose of marking is to preserve information until the next changeover.
Inspect the set while it is still on the vehicle
Look for visible damage and uneven wear as each tire comes off. A seasonal changeover is a useful point to identify a problem before the tires are put away, when it is easier to arrange professional advice or replacement if necessary.
What to look for
- Damage to the tread, sidewall or wheel that is visible during removal.
- Uneven wear across the tread or from one tire to another.
- Stones and other debris lodged in the tread grooves.
Record anything that needs attention instead of hiding it in storage. If the tire or wheel maker provides a specific inspection procedure, use that procedure. A storage routine protects a sound set; it does not make damaged or badly worn tires serviceable.
Clean off salt, mud and brake dust
Remove stones and loose debris from the tread. Wash away dirt and road residue, including the salt, mud and brake dust that accumulate during winter driving. Cleaning prevents that residue from remaining against the tire for months and makes it easier to spot damage or wear.
After washing, dry every tire thoroughly. Pay attention to tread grooves, the bead area and any place where water can remain. The tires must be dry before you seal them in plastic bags or put them into a closed tote. If they are still damp, leave them in a clean, protected place until they are completely dry.

A simple cleaning sequence
- Remove the wheel or tire and keep its recorded position with it.
- Pick stones and visible debris from the tread.
- Wash off dirt, salt, mud and brake dust using a method compatible with the tire and wheel maker’s care instructions.
- Rinse away residue and inspect again for damage or uneven wear.
- Allow the tire to dry completely before packaging or moving it into its final storage position.
Do not apply unapproved chemicals or dressings simply to make the rubber look newer. The storage guidance is focused on removing contamination and limiting harmful exposure, not on adding a cosmetic coating.
Choose the right storage location
Use a clean, cool, dry indoor area. The space should protect the tires from direct sunlight, heat sources and ozone-producing equipment such as electric motors or generators. Keep the set away from grease, gasoline, solvents, oils and other chemicals that can harm rubber.
What the location must avoid
- Sunlight: direct exposure is specifically identified as an avoidable hazard.
- Heat: do not place tires next to heaters, furnaces, hot pipes or other heat sources.
- Ozone: keep them away from equipment that produces ozone, including electric motors and generators.
- Chemicals: isolate them from grease, gasoline, solvents, oils and similar substances.
- Contamination and damage: avoid dirty floors, sharp objects and areas where other items can strike or rub against the tires.
Do not load boxes, tools or other heavy items on top of the tires. Crushing or constant loading can damage the set and makes safe handling more difficult. Keep enough clear space to move each tire without dragging it across a sharp edge.
If your home has no suitable indoor space
A clean indoor closet, basement area or garage can work if it actually meets the environmental requirements. A hot, damp or chemically contaminated garage is not made suitable by covering the tires. If no area meets those conditions, a local seasonal tire-storage service may be a practical alternative; ask how the provider controls temperature, moisture, sunlight, chemicals and physical loading before handing over the set.

Store mounted and unmounted tires differently
The correct orientation depends on whether the tire remains mounted on its wheel. Michelin and Continental give the same basic distinction, although you should follow model-specific instructions if your tire or vehicle maker says otherwise.
| Set condition | Recommended position | Do not do |
|---|---|---|
| Tires mounted on wheels | Stack them horizontally or hang them, following the maker’s guidance and using a support that cannot damage the wheel. | Do not leave mounted assemblies standing upright for the storage period. |
| Unmounted tires | Stand each tire upright on its tread. | Do not stack or hang unmounted tires. |
Mounted assemblies
When a winter tire remains on its wheel, Michelin says it may be stacked or hung rather than left upright. Stack assemblies on a stable, clean surface and keep the pile protected from tipping or from items being placed on top. If you hang them, use a properly designed support that carries the wheel safely; do not suspend a wheel from a sharp hook or an improvised point that can damage the rim, tire or finish.
Unmounted tires
Keep each unmounted tire upright. Continental cautions against hanging unmounted tires, and Michelin also says not to stack them. Arrange them so they cannot fall or be crushed by nearby objects, while leaving enough room to move them without scraping the sidewalls.

- Easy Storage: Soft, lightweight, and flexible, these black wheel totes fold down quickly after use and fit into the included storage bag. Keep your tire totes organized in the garage, trunk, RV compartment, or trailer storage area without taking up much space.
Why the distinction matters
Mounted assemblies have the wheel to support them and can be handled as complete units. An unmounted tire has no wheel structure, so the manufacturers’ consumer guidance calls for upright storage rather than a suspended or stacked arrangement. Treat this as a configuration-specific rule, not a preference that can be exchanged for convenience.
Use bags and totes as protection, not as a substitute for good storage
Michelin recommends sealed plastic bags if possible. Continental describes bagging the tires before placing them into a tire tote, while noting that totes are not airtight. A bag can keep dust off and reduce exposure during handling and storage, but it cannot correct a damp room, direct sun, excessive heat or chemical vapors.
Bagging procedure
- Confirm that the tire is clean and completely dry.
- Choose a bag large enough to enclose the tire without forcing or sharply bending it.
- Place one tire or mounted assembly in the bag, unless the bag’s design specifically supports another arrangement.
- Close the bag securely to limit dust and exposure. Do not describe a bag as airtight unless its specifications actually say so.
- Position the bagged tire according to its mounted or unmounted status.
Do not trap visible moisture inside a sealed bag. If condensation or dampness appears, open the bag in a protected area, let the tire dry fully and then repackage it.
What a tire tote can and cannot do
A tote can make a set easier to carry and keep covered. Continental specifically notes that a tote is not airtight, so it should be treated as an outer carrier rather than a moisture-control system. The underlying storage area still needs to be clean, cool and dry, and the tires still need the correct orientation.
A complete changeover-to-storage workflow
The following sequence keeps the information attached to the tire it belongs to and prevents a common mistake, such as cleaning one tire and losing its position record before the set is put away.
- Confirm the changeover conditions. Use your vehicle and tire guidance. If you follow Michelin’s U.S. recommendation, plan the switch when temperatures consistently rise above 45°F, while recognizing that this is not universal.
- Prepare labels and a storage record. Have tags, a marker, a diagram or a camera ready before removing the first wheel.
- Record the original position. Identify each tire as it comes off and keep that identification with the tire.
- Inspect for damage and uneven wear. Set aside any tire or wheel that needs professional evaluation rather than burying the issue in storage.
- Clean the tire. Remove tread debris and wash off dirt, salt, mud and brake dust.
- Dry it completely. Do not package a wet tire.
- Prepare the location. Clear sharp objects and heavy items, and verify that the space is indoors, cool, dry and away from sunlight, heat, ozone-producing equipment and damaging chemicals.
- Select the orientation. Stack or hang mounted assemblies; stand unmounted tires upright. If a specific manufacturer instruction differs, follow that instruction.
- Bag if useful. Use a suitable sealed plastic bag after drying, remembering that a tote is not airtight.
- Place the set without crushing it. Keep tires stable, protected and free from items loaded on top.
Preparing the tires for the next season
When the next changeover arrives, use the position record rather than guessing. Remove each tire from its bag or tote, inspect it again for visible damage or uneven wear, and clean away any storage dust before installation if needed. Follow the vehicle and tire maker’s instructions for the permitted rotation and installation positions, particularly when the tires have directional or otherwise position-specific designs.
If a tire was flagged during the previous inspection, resolve that issue before it goes back on the vehicle. Storage is complete only when the set remains identifiable, protected and ready for a fresh inspection at the next installation.

Common storage mistakes and their fixes
Putting wet tires into sealed bags
Problem: moisture is enclosed with the tire. Fix: remove the tire, dry it fully in a protected area and then reseal it.
Leaving unmounted tires in a stack
Problem: the configuration does not match the manufacturers’ orientation guidance. Fix: stand each unmounted tire upright and keep it stable.

Standing mounted wheels upright for months
Problem: Michelin’s guidance for mounted tires is to stack or hang them instead. Fix: use a stable stack or suitable hanging support.
Using a tote as proof of environmental protection
Problem: Continental says a tote is not airtight. Fix: improve the room first, then use a bag and tote only as additional dust and handling protection.
Storing tires beside a motor, generator or chemicals
Problem: ozone and chemical exposure can harm rubber. Fix: move the set to a clean area away from those sources.
Forgetting which tire came from which corner
Problem: the next rotation becomes guesswork. Fix: label every tire before removal and keep the record with the set.
