When a wine delivery arrives, move the bottles out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Keep them in the coolest, darkest place in your home where the temperature stays steady. A wine cooler is optional for bottles you plan to drink soon, but can be useful for longer storage or when no suitable spot is available.
What to do when the delivery arrives
- Check the package. Look for broken glass, leaks, or visibly damaged packaging before moving the bottles. If you find damage, document it and contact the seller promptly; the seller’s policy and the applicable carrier terms determine what happens next.
- Move the wine away from heat and light. Do not leave it in direct sun or in a hot location. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) recommends avoiding high temperatures and direct light in its 2020 shipping and storage guidance.
- Put the bottles somewhere stable. Choose a cool, dark location that does not experience frequent temperature changes. A cabinet, carton, or crate can block light, but it cannot regulate temperature.
- Check the seller and carrier terms if there is a problem. There is no single remedy or deadline established for every shipment. Keep the packaging and delivery details until you have checked the relevant policy.
If the bottles feel warm, that alone does not establish whether the wine has been damaged. The Australian Wine Research Institute notes that transport conditions can affect wine’s sensory properties, but its cited guidance does not provide a consumer test or universal temperature threshold for diagnosing damage.

Choose a storage place for how soon you will drink the wine
Drinking it soon
For a short wait, a cool, dark place with a steady temperature is generally a practical choice. A closet or cabinet may work if it is away from heat and direct light and does not regularly warm up or cool down. Keeping the bottle in its carton can help shield it from light, but the carton does not make an unsuitable warm or fluctuating location suitable.
Keeping it for longer
If you intend to store wine for an extended period, or your home does not have a reliably cool and stable location, consider a wine refrigerator. A dedicated cooler is a way to manage storage conditions, not a requirement for every bottle. A wine rack or storage cabinet can help organize bottles, but does not control temperature, humidity, light, or odors.

Using a regular refrigerator
A regular refrigerator can chill a bottle for serving. It should not be treated as a long-term wine cellar: Liebherr cautions that ordinary refrigerators have limitations for wine storage, including temperature fluctuations and food odors.
How to think about temperature and humidity
Published guidance gives different storage ranges, so there is no single precise target shared by all the sources. The useful common principle is to avoid hot conditions and frequent temperature swings. These figures belong to their respective publishers and contexts:

These ranges differ; do not read them as a single agreed ideal or as proof that a brief departure from one figure has spoiled a bottle. If you want to check a closet or storage area, an indoor temperature and humidity monitor can measure conditions, but it will not regulate them.

Liebherr also reports a tasting example in which the fruit aroma of wine stored at 31 °C decreased dramatically after six months; the effect was also clear after 12 months at 23 °C. The guide does not identify a publication year for that example, and it should not be treated as a prediction for every wine or a consumer test for a delivered bottle.

Position bottles according to their closure and plans
For cork-finished bottles intended for extended storage, Miele and Publix discuss storing bottles horizontally so the cork stays in contact with the wine. Do not assume that every closure type requires the same orientation. If you are unsure what closure a bottle uses, follow the producer’s guidance rather than applying a cork-specific rule to all bottles.
Horizontal storage is an organizational choice as well as a storage practice: a wine rack can hold bottles this way, but it does not create stable temperature or humidity. A rack is useful when its location is already appropriate; it cannot compensate for heat, sunlight, or repeated temperature swings.

When a wine cooler makes sense
Consider a wine refrigerator if you plan to keep bottles for an extended period and cannot provide a suitable stable place at home. When comparing options, focus on the conditions and fit you need rather than assuming that any cooler is automatically suitable.

- Capacity: Choose space for the number of bottles you expect to store, not just the first delivery.
- Shelf fit: Check that the shelves accommodate the bottle shapes you intend to keep.
- Noise and energy use: These can affect where the unit is practical to place and operate.
- Intended storage duration: Match the purchase to whether you need a stable place for longer storage or only a short wait before serving.
No particular model is established here as best. A thermometer-hygrometer can help you monitor a storage spot before buying a cooler, but it only measures the conditions.
Delivery details to check
For wine shipments handled under UPS’s U.S. wine-shipping process, an adult at least 21 years old must be available to complete delivery. UPS also advises insuring shipments against temperature-related issues and breakage. Requirements can vary with the route, carrier, and seller, so check the terms that apply to your order rather than assuming that one carrier’s U.S. process applies everywhere.
If a package arrives visibly damaged, take clear photos of the outside packaging and the affected bottles, then contact the seller promptly and follow its instructions. If there is no visible damage but you are concerned the wine was exposed to severe heat, contact the seller and ask how its policy handles the situation. Do not rely on warmth, appearance, or a single taste as a definitive diagnostic test.
