How much water should you store?
The CDC recommends storing at least 1 gallon of water per person per day for 3 days, and trying for a 2-week supply if possible. Plan extra for household needs such as pregnancy or illness, for pets, and in hot climates. See the CDC’s emergency water supply guidance.

Choose and sanitize containers
Use a safe container
Use an FDA-approved food-grade water container when available. If you do not have one, choose a durable, unbreakable container with a tightly closing top; a narrow opening is preferable. Do not reuse a container that held toxic substances such as pesticides or petroleum products. Food-grade emergency water containers are an optional storage solution, not a water-treatment device.

Clean before filling
- Wash the container with soap and rinse it completely.
- Mix 1 teaspoon of unscented household chlorine bleach containing 5%–9% sodium hypochlorite with 1 quart of water.
- Pour the solution into the container, cover it, and shake so the solution contacts every interior surface. Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Pour out the solution and let the container air-dry before filling it with safe tap water.
These steps follow the CDC’s container preparation instructions.

Seal, label, and store the water
- Close each container tightly. Label it “drinking water” and write the storage date on it.
- Store containers in a cool place, away from direct sunlight and toxic substances such as gasoline or pesticides.
- Replace water you have stored in household-filled containers every six months.
- When dispensing water, keep hands and used scoops out of the container. Use a clean utensil each time.
The CDC’s safe water storage guidance also emphasizes protecting stored water from contamination after filling.
If you need to treat water, match the treatment to the hazard
Boiling can address germs, but it does not make water containing fuel or toxic chemicals safe. If officials say water may be chemically contaminated, do not rely on boiling or assume the tap is safe. Follow the local notice and use an approved alternative source as directed.

For water that needs treatment for germs, the CDC says to bring clear water to a rolling boil for 1 minute, or for 3 minutes at elevations above 6,500 feet. Let it cool, then store it in clean, sanitized containers with tight covers. Read the CDC’s emergency water treatment guidance for details.
Follow the exact water advisory
A water main repair does not automatically mean every tap-water advisory calls for the same response. Check the wording from your utility or local health department and follow it while it is in effect. The CDC distinguishes among boil water, do not drink, and do not use advisories: a do-not-drink notice may concern chemicals or toxins that boiling cannot remove, while a do-not-use notice means avoiding tap water for any purpose. Do not treat a notice as a generic instruction to boil everything.
