Use Steam’s Most Played list to see which games have the largest visible player populations at the moment you check. Use Top Sellers to see which games are generating the most revenue recently—not which have sold the most copies.
What Steam’s two lists measure
Most Played: visible activity now
Steam’s charts page labels this view “Most Played” and displays an in-game player count beside the top entry. It is the more useful starting point when you want a snapshot of current activity. Steam’s public chart pages do not fully explain the precise sampling and counting rules, however, so the count should not be treated as a measure of unique players, daily users, or long-term popularity.

Top Sellers: revenue, not units
Steam labels its global Top Sellers chart as the top-selling games “by revenue.” Valve says the ranking includes all game revenue sources, including the base game, DLC, and in-game transactions. A free-to-play game can therefore rank if players spend on its additional content, and a game with expensive editions or substantial in-game purchases can rank above one with more players or copies sold.

That makes the live chart a signal of recent commercial momentum, not a direct count of purchases.

Which chart should you use?

Steam’s charts page separates live charts from weekly charts, monthly top releases, and year-end summaries. Compare like with like: a live snapshot and a weekly list cover different periods. Steamworks’ stated trailing-24-hour methodology applies to the live Top Sellers chart; it should not be assumed to describe every chart or timeframe.
Why your Steam chart may look different
Steamworks says the default storefront is territory-specific, and country charts are available for some popular countries. You can switch to a global view or another country, so regional differences can change which games appear near the top.

Your store preferences can also affect the list. Steamworks says charts can filter categories, games you already own, and free-to-play titles according to a player’s content preferences. Two people may therefore see different storefront charts even when checking at the same time.
How to use the charts to find a game
- Choose the signal you care about. Start with Most Played for visible current activity, or Top Sellers for recent revenue.
- Match the timeframe. Use a live chart for a current snapshot and a weekly or dated chart when you want a longer period.
- Check the scope and filters. Note whether you are viewing a country or global chart and whether store preferences are filtering categories, owned games, or free-to-play titles.
- Open the game’s store page before deciding. Check its reviews, tags, system requirements, and play-style details against what you want and the hardware you have.
What a high rank does—and does not—mean
A chart position is a discovery signal, not a quality score or personal recommendation. Most Played can show that a game has visible activity without establishing that it is welcoming to newcomers or a good fit for you. Top Sellers can indicate revenue without revealing the number of copies sold or the number of people playing. Use the list that answers your immediate question, then judge the individual game on the details that matter to you.
