To store PHP sessions in Memcached on Debian, install the php-memcached extension, set PHP-FPM’s session.save_handler to memcached, point session.save_path at the Memcached host and port, then restart the active PHP-FPM service. Nginx does not store or serialize the session: it forwards the request to PHP-FPM, and PHP-FPM’s Memcached handler reads and writes the session record.

How the request path works
A browser sends a request containing a session cookie, normally PHPSESSID, to Nginx. Nginx handles HTTP and FastCGI forwarding. For a PHP request, it passes the request to PHP-FPM through a Unix socket or TCP listener. PHP-FPM runs the script, and the PHP runtime selected for that FPM pool opens a connection to Memcached when the script starts or updates a session.

Memcached stores the serialized session value under a key generated by PHP. On a later request, PHP-FPM asks Memcached for that value, updates it if necessary, and sends a response through Nginx. Nginx’s cache modules are unrelated to this process. Do not add memcached_pass to an Nginx location in an attempt to enable PHP sessions; that directive serves cached content and does not implement PHP session serialization, expiration, or locking.
What you need before configuring sessions
- A Debian server with root or
sudoaccess. - Nginx serving the application and PHP-FPM installed for the PHP version that runs the site.
- A Memcached daemon reachable from that PHP-FPM host. A local daemon listening on
127.0.0.1:11211is the simplest topology. - Knowledge of the FPM service and pool that actually handles the application. The command-line PHP configuration can differ from the FPM configuration.
- A plan for session lifetime, cookie security, and what the application should do when Memcached is restarted or evicts data.
Memcached is volatile cache storage. A process restart, eviction caused by memory pressure, or failed node can invalidate active sessions. It is appropriate when the application can tolerate reauthentication or has another way to recover, but it is not durable login storage.

Install Memcached and the PHP extension
Use Debian packages so service files, dependencies, and integration are maintained by the distribution:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install memcached php-memcachedphp-memcached is a virtual package that resolves to the extension for Debian’s default PHP version. If the server has several PHP versions, install the package matching the FPM runtime, such as php8.2-memcached, rather than assuming the default version is the one Nginx uses.
Check which FPM services exist:
systemctl list-units 'php*-fpm.service'After installing or changing a PHP module, restart the active service. For example:
sudo systemctl restart php8.2-fpmReplace php8.2-fpm with the service name on your host. Restarting only the command-line shell does not reload an already-running FPM worker.
Configure PHP-FPM to use Memcached
Put the settings in the FPM-loaded configuration
Set these directives in the php.ini loaded by FPM, or in an FPM configuration file that applies to the site’s pool:
session.save_handler = memcached
session.save_path = "127.0.0.1:11211"The exact path varies by Debian release and PHP version. A temporary phpinfo() page served through the same Nginx and FPM site can show the loaded configuration, but remove that page immediately after checking it. Never leave a public phpinfo() endpoint in production.

Use the correct session path syntax
For one daemon, the path is a host and port:
session.save_path = "127.0.0.1:11211"For multiple Memcached servers, PHP’s Memcached handler accepts a comma-separated list:
session.save_path = "cache-a.example:11211,cache-b.example:11211"Do not prepend tcp://; that syntax belongs to examples for other extensions and is not the format used by the Memcached session handler described here.
Use names or addresses that are resolvable from the PHP-FPM host, and make sure every listed server allows connections from that host. A list does not make session data durable: a node outage, eviction, or restart can still remove the session. If you use a pool, choose the hashing, failed-server handling, and replica behavior deliberately rather than treating the list as a transparent backup.

Set session lifetime deliberately
PHP documents a default session.gc_maxlifetime of 1,440 seconds. The default session-cookie lifetime is zero, which means the browser normally discards the cookie when its session ends. These are separate controls: the cookie tells the browser how long to present an identifier, while PHP and Memcached determine how long the server-side record can remain usable.
If the application requires longer logins, align all of the following:
session.gc_maxlifetimein the FPM runtime.- The application’s idle-timeout and “remember me” policy.
- The expiration behavior configured by the Memcached session handler.
- The cookie’s
Max-AgeorExpiresvalue, if the application sets one.
A larger lifetime is not automatically safer. Long-lived identifiers increase the window in which a stolen cookie can be used, so pair any longer timeout with session rotation, logout invalidation, and secure cookie attributes.
Connect Nginx to the right PHP-FPM pool
Nginx only needs a normal FastCGI PHP location. Debian’s packaged configuration commonly resembles:

}The snippet and socket name vary by Debian release and installed PHP version. The important details are that Nginx passes the script filename and query string and that fastcgi_pass points to the FPM pool where the Memcached extension and session settings are loaded. If the socket is for PHP 8.1 but you edited PHP 8.2’s configuration, the site will continue using the old settings.
After editing an Nginx server block, validate and reload it:
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginxReloading Nginx is not a substitute for restarting FPM after a module or FPM configuration change; perform both operations when both configurations changed.
Verify that sessions really use Memcached
Use a short-lived diagnostic script or an application diagnostic route available only to an administrator. A minimal test can start a session, write a value, and display the effective handler:

If you test with a command-line request tool, preserve the cookie between requests; otherwise each request creates a new session and the test is inconclusive. Remove the script or restrict the diagnostic route after testing.
Check the extension in the FPM SAPI, not merely with php -m in a shell. The latter reports the CLI SAPI, which can load a different set of modules. The FPM diagnostic output should show the Memcached extension and the effective values for both session directives.
Confirm where the daemon is listening:
ss -ltnp | grep 11211The output should match your intended interface and firewall policy. A local-only installation should normally bind to loopback; a multi-server design should bind only to a private interface or protected network.

Finally, inspect Memcached statistics and the PHP-FPM and Nginx logs while making a test request. Look for connection failures, authentication errors, lock timeouts, or warnings about an unavailable server.
Session locking and concurrent requests
Modern applications often issue several requests at once: a page load may trigger API calls, image metadata requests, or background form submissions. Without locking, two requests that read the same session can overwrite each other’s changes. Debian’s Memcached configuration documents session-specific controls, with memcached.sess_locking enabled by default.
Start with the defaults. If a request needs the session only briefly, call session_write_close() after reading or updating it so other requests do not wait unnecessarily. Change one lock setting at a time and observe the application under its normal concurrency. Relevant controls include:
memcached.sess_locking, which enables or disables per-session locking.- Minimum and maximum lock-wait times.
- Lock retry count and lock expiry.
- Connection timeout and binary-protocol selection.
- Consistent hashing for a server pool.
- Failed-server removal and optional replicas.
- SASL username and password settings where the deployment supports them.
Disabling locking can reduce wait time but allows lost updates when requests modify the same session concurrently. Increasing lock waits can preserve consistency while making slow or stuck requests more visible to users. There is no universal value: choose according to the application’s request patterns and failure policy.
Designing a multi-server deployment
When two or more web servers share an application, a session stored on one machine’s local filesystem is not automatically available on another machine. A shared Memcached service removes that dependence on local disk, so a user can reach different Nginx/PHP-FPM nodes while presenting the same session identifier.

If the pool is listed as cache-a.example:11211,cache-b.example:11211, verify that each FPM host can resolve and reach both names. Consistent hashing can reduce movement of keys when the pool changes, but it cannot recover data that was already evicted or lost on a failed node.
A load balancer’s sticky-session option can hide an improperly shared session store, but stickiness is not a replacement for a correctly configured shared backend. It also reduces failover flexibility. If the application needs sessions to survive cache restarts or requires stronger durability guarantees, evaluate a database or Redis-backed design instead.

Protect Memcached
Do not expose an unauthenticated Memcached daemon to the public Internet. Bind it to loopback when PHP-FPM is local, or to a private interface when remote FPM nodes need access. Apply network ACLs or a firewall that permits only the expected application hosts. Where supported by the deployment, configure SASL consistently on the client and daemon.
Memcached access controls protect the server-side session value, but they do not protect the cookie in a browser. At the application or framework layer, use HTTPS and set appropriate Secure, HttpOnly, and SameSite attributes. Rotate the session identifier after authentication or privilege changes to reduce session-fixation risk.
Protect the PHP-FPM listener
Restrict the FPM Unix socket permissions or TCP listener so that Nginx is the only intended client. PHP-FPM’s documentation warns that a client able to open a FastCGI connection can control request configuration, including auto_prepend_file, and can execute arbitrary code. Do not publish the FPM port on a broad network interface, and ensure the socket owner, group, and mode match the Nginx worker account without granting unnecessary access.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The handler still reports files
- You edited the CLI
php.iniinstead of the file loaded by FPM. - The site uses a different PHP-FPM version or pool than expected.
- The Memcached extension is not installed for that PHP version.
- FPM workers were not restarted after the change.
Check the FPM diagnostic output, install the matching versioned package, and restart the exact service shown by systemctl list-units 'php*-fpm.service'.
Every request creates a new session
- The browser is not returning the session cookie, possibly because of an incorrect domain, path, HTTPS, or
SameSitepolicy. - The
session.save_pathhost or port is unreachable from FPM. - Memcached is restarting, evicting keys, or refusing connections.
- Different web nodes use different application keys or session settings.
Inspect the response and request cookies, test the path from the FPM host, and correlate the request time with Memcached, PHP-FPM, and Nginx logs.
Users are logged out during traffic spikes
Check Memcached memory usage and eviction statistics, then check whether lock waits or connection limits are producing errors. Increase capacity or adjust the pool only after confirming the cause. Do not simply increase session lifetime: that can increase retained data and does not prevent eviction.
Requests hang while using a session
Lock contention is the likely cause when several requests use one session concurrently. Confirm lock-wait messages in PHP-FPM logs, keep session-held work short, call session_write_close() when safe, and tune lock wait and retry settings one change at a time. Disabling locking trades the wait for possible lost updates.
Nginx returns a 502 or PHP warnings mention Memcached
A 502 usually indicates an FPM socket or worker problem, while a PHP warning may indicate that FPM cannot connect to Memcached. Verify the FPM socket path, service status, daemon listening address, firewall rules, DNS resolution, and any SASL credentials. Nginx cannot repair a failed PHP-to-Memcached connection because PHP-FPM owns that connection.
Memcached versus other session backends
Memcached is attractive when low operational overhead and fast, volatile storage are more important than survival across restarts. The right backend depends on the application’s failure requirements rather than on Nginx.

This comparison describes design properties, not benchmark results. Measure the application’s actual request rate and session size before selecting a backend.

A production-readiness checklist
- The PHP-FPM SAPI loads the matching
memcachedextension. session.save_handleris exactlymemcached.session.save_pathcontains the intended host and port list, without atcp://prefix.- The active FPM service has been restarted after module or INI changes.
- Nginx passes requests to the same FPM version whose configuration you edited.
- A two-request test confirms that a session value persists with the same cookie.
- Memcached listens only on the private interface or addresses required by the topology.
- Firewall and ACL rules allow only the application hosts.
- FPM’s socket or TCP listener is inaccessible to untrusted clients.
