Use a stable, descriptive single-label hostname such as web-prod-nyc-01 or api-01. Write it with lowercase ASCII letters, digits and hyphens; avoid spaces, underscores, dots, repeated separators and leading or trailing hyphens. Keep the name at 63 characters or fewer. Linux documents a 64-character hostname limit, but 63 is the safer ceiling because it also fits the DNS label limit.

Use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN), such as web-01.example.com, only when you control example.com and have created the corresponding DNS records. Your VPS’s operating-system hostname, its public forward-DNS name and its provider-managed reverse-DNS (PTR) record are related but separate settings.

The practical recommendation
A VPS hostname should tell you what the machine is for without depending on a particular provider’s internal ID. A pattern combining role, environment, location and sequence works well:
web-prod-nyc-01— production web server, New York, first nodedb-staging-fra-02— second staging database server in Frankfurtapi-dev-01— first development API host
Choose components that will remain meaningful if you migrate the virtual machine. Provider names such as an instance UUID can still be recorded in inventory, but they are poor human-facing hostnames because they are difficult to read in a shell prompt, alert or log search.

Keep the operating-system hostname static and predictable. If you later expose a service publicly, map a domain name to the server with DNS rather than changing the guest name merely to make a website URL.
Hostname rules that prevent avoidable problems
systemd-hostnamed recommends generating one DNS label rather than an FQDN and describes the preferred character set and length in its documentation: systemd-hostnamed documentation. Apply these rules to the name you set with hostnamectl:
- Use lowercase letters from
atoz, digits and hyphens. - Do not use spaces, underscores or punctuation.
- Do not begin or end with a hyphen, and avoid runs of repeated hyphens.
- Make the value one label with no dots. A dot turns the value into a multi-label name and conflicts with systemd’s single-label guidance.
- Stay at or below 63 characters. This is the conservative DNS-label limit; Debian’s manuals document a 64-character Linux hostname limit (hostnamectl(1) and hostname(5)).
- Prefer ASCII even where an internationalized DNS name might technically be possible. systemd notes that avoiding non-ASCII characters is safer for interoperability.
Underscores are especially tempting in names such as web_prod_01, but they are not valid in the ordinary host-label syntax expected by common hostname tools and DNS clients. Reserve underscores for DNS record types that explicitly support them, not for the machine’s hostname.
Short hostname or FQDN?
A short hostname is a single label such as web-prod-nyc-01. An FQDN contains that label plus a domain, such as web-01.example.com. They solve different problems, so decide based on your DNS and operational needs rather than treating the longer form as automatically better.

When a short name is the better choice
Use a short name for most internal, development and private-network VPSs. It avoids coupling the operating system to a domain that may change and remains valid when the machine moves between providers. It is also the safest default when you have not yet decided whether the server will be internet-facing.

When an FQDN is useful
An FQDN is appropriate when a service, certificate, access policy or monitoring system needs a globally unique name. For example, web-01.example.com can identify one public endpoint while web-02.example.com identifies another. Create the forward DNS record before relying on the name in clients or automation. Google Cloud’s custom-hostname instructions likewise treat an RFC 1035-compliant hostname and DNS-record creation as separate steps: Create a VM instance with a custom hostname.
You can still keep the guest’s static hostname as the short label and use the FQDN at the application or DNS layer. This separates local identity from the public address and makes a later domain change less disruptive.
Design a naming scheme for more than one VPS
Write the scheme down before creating the second or third machine. Decide which fields are mandatory, their order and their abbreviations. A practical pattern is:
<role>-<environment>-<location>-<sequence>
- Role:
web,api,db,cache,workerorvpn. - Environment:
prod,stage,devortest. - Location: a short, documented site or region code such as
nyc,fraorlon. - Sequence: zero-padded numbers such as
01,02and03, so lexical sorting matches numerical order.
Not every host needs every field. A small project might use api-01; a larger fleet benefits from the full pattern. Keep abbreviations consistent: switching between production, prod and prd makes filtering harder. Avoid embedding an IP address, CPU size or temporary purpose because those attributes change more often than the machine’s role.
Set the hostname with hostnamectl
On a systemd-based distribution, set the static hostname from a shell with root privileges:

- Choose and check a single-label value, for example
web-prod-nyc-01. - Run
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname web-prod-nyc-01. - Check the reported state with
hostnamectl status. - Confirm the persisted value with
cat /etc/hostname. - Open a new shell or reconnect through SSH if your current prompt still displays the old name.
hostnamectl manages three related forms. The static hostname is stored persistently and is the value you normally set. A transient hostname can be supplied by network configuration and may disappear or change after a reboot. A pretty hostname is a human-friendly display name and may contain characters unsuitable for DNS. When both static and transient values exist, the configured static hostname has priority, as documented in the Debian hostnamectl manual.
Do not put a public FQDN into the command simply because a website will use that address. Set the guest label that best identifies the machine, then configure the domain’s DNS record separately. If an automation image or cloud-init process resets the name during boot, inspect that provisioning configuration rather than repeatedly changing it by hand.
Configure forward and reverse DNS separately
Forward DNS (name to address)
For web-01.example.com to work publicly, create an A record pointing to the VPS’s IPv4 address and, where applicable, an AAAA record for IPv6. Use the exact host name in the record and allow for the DNS provider’s TTL when testing changes. A correct guest hostname alone does not publish either record.
Reverse DNS (address to name)
Reverse DNS uses a PTR record to map an IP address back to a name. VPS providers commonly expose this setting in their control panel or API. Changing /etc/hostname or running hostnamectl does not normally alter the provider-owned PTR record. Configure the PTR separately when mail delivery, security tools or provider requirements depend on it, and make the PTR name resolve forward to the same address where possible.
Because reverse-DNS controls differ by provider, follow that provider’s documented panel or API procedure. Treat the OS static hostname, the forward DNS zone and the provider’s reverse-DNS entry as three records to keep consistent, not as one automatic setting.

Validate the result before deploying services
After setting the name and DNS, check each layer independently:
- Run
hostnamectl statusand confirm the static value is the intended label. - Run
hostnameor inspect a fresh shell prompt to confirm local applications see the new name. - Inspect
/etc/hostnameto ensure the value survives a reboot. - From a machine using the relevant DNS resolver, query the forward record with your preferred DNS diagnostic tool and verify it returns the VPS address.
- Query the address’s PTR record if reverse DNS is required, and check that it returns the intended FQDN.
- Review service configuration, TLS certificates, monitoring targets and inventory entries for the old hostname.
A successful local check does not prove public DNS is correct, and a successful forward lookup does not prove the PTR record is set. Test from outside the VPS network when the service is internet-facing, because local resolver caches and split-horizon DNS can hide an error.

The name contains a dot
If you set web-01.example.com as the guest name, some tools may treat it as an FQDN while others expect a single label. For predictable systemd behavior, use web-01 as the static hostname and publish web-01.example.com through DNS.
The name uses an underscore or non-ASCII character
Replace it with lowercase ASCII and hyphens. This avoids incompatibilities among DHCP clients, TLS tooling, monitoring systems and DNS libraries, even when a particular component appears to accept the original spelling.
The value exceeds 63 characters
Shorten the role or location code, remove redundant fields and retain the sequence number. Linux may permit up to 64 characters, but a 63-character maximum keeps the name usable as a DNS label.
The prompt still shows the old value
Start a new login session. Shell prompts are often rendered when the session starts, so changing the system hostname does not rewrite an already-open prompt. If the value reverts after reboot, check cloud-init, DHCP or other network-management settings for a transient hostname assignment.
Public clients cannot resolve the FQDN
Verify that the A or AAAA record exists in the authoritative DNS zone, that the record contains the current address and that you are allowing for TTL and resolver caching. The VPS’s local hostname is not a substitute for a public DNS record.
Reverse DNS is wrong
Correct the PTR entry in the VPS provider’s control panel or API. Editing the guest’s /etc/hostname changes local identity, not an IP block’s provider-managed reverse-DNS delegation.
A decision checklist
- Do you need a public, globally unique name now? If not, choose a short static label.
- Can you administer the domain’s DNS zone? Use an FQDN only if the answer is yes.
- Will the VPS move between providers? Prefer a provider-neutral role and sequence name.
- Does the candidate use only lowercase ASCII letters, digits and hyphens?
- Is it one label, with no edge hyphens, and no more than 63 characters?
- Have you documented the role, environment, location codes and numbering scheme?
- Have you configured forward DNS and, when required, the provider’s PTR record independently of the guest hostname?
For most Linux VPSs, web-prod-nyc-01-style naming is the durable default: readable to people, valid across common DNS tooling and independent of any one provider. Add an FQDN when a controlled domain and public DNS make it necessary, not merely because the server has a public IP.
