Store heart-rate readings as timestamped samples, and keep each sample linked to the platform record, source app, and device that supplied it. Preserve the original time-zone context and identifiers alongside normalized fields for querying: a timestamp alone is not a reliable identity key, and a single daily average cannot stand in for the source readings.
What a useful heart-rate schema needs to preserve
Heart-rate data is a series of individual readings, not just one value for a workout or day. In Android Health Connect, for example, a HeartRateRecord contains samples with their own time and beats-per-minute value. Apple HealthKit uses its own constrained data types and units. Neither model implies that every platform exposes identical fields.

A cross-platform app should keep both query-friendly fields and source-native information. The normalized layer makes tasks such as ordering readings or filtering by source practical; native identifiers and metadata make it possible to understand where the imported data came from and to apply provider-specific update rules. Treat normalization as an explicit mapping, not as a reason to discard source details. See the platform descriptions in Apple’s HealthKit overview and Health Connect’s data type documentation.

A practical local model can use related tables rather than repeating all provenance fields on every reading. The following is a design recommendation based on documented platform fields; Apple and Android do not mandate these table names or a local database layout.

|---|---|
heart_rate_sample |
A local primary key, sample timestamp as an absolute instant, numeric value, unit, type identifier, and a reference to the source record. |
source_record |
The provider’s record identifier when available, record start and end, source reference, and import or update metadata. |
data_source |
The originating app or platform and any source identity or version details that the provider exposes. |
device |
Available hardware details, such as device type, manufacturer, or model, linked to the relevant source record or source. |
HealthKit records source and version information and identifies the hardware device. Health Connect metadata includes data origin, device details, a generated record ID, and optional client sync identity and version. Keep these concepts distinct: the device that measured a value, the app or platform that supplied it, and the record containing it answer different provenance questions. Apple documents source information in its HealthKit overview; Android documents record metadata in its data type format.
Store time as an instant, but retain civil-time context
Use an unambiguous instant to compare and order samples across devices. Also retain a zone offset or equivalent source civil-time context when the source provides one. That context matters when a report groups readings by the day a person experienced them locally rather than by UTC date.

Health Connect says written data must specify a zone offset so apps can represent civil time, which may differ from UTC. Do not silently replace a known local offset with UTC when writing data. The precise local representation is an application decision, not a universal schema rule. Test date-boundary and daylight-saving transitions in the application’s reporting logic; the platform documentation does not prescribe one database representation. See Health Connect’s time and data format guidance.

Make imports idempotent without treating timestamps as IDs
For repeatable imports, retain the provider’s record identifier where available. If the provider supports a stable client or import identity, store that too, along with any version or last-modified marker needed to recognize updates. Keep provider-generated identifiers separate from identifiers your app supplies.

Health Connect explicitly distinguishes its generated record ID from a client ID; its IDs are not tied to timestamps. Client IDs can help with sync and conflict resolution, while client record versions support version checks during upsert. These are Health Connect concepts, not Apple identifiers. HealthKit has separate source and sync metadata concepts; consult Health Connect’s metadata guidance, its write-data guidance, and Apple’s HealthKit metadata keys when mapping each provider.
A timestamp can still be a useful sort or query field, but it should not be the universal uniqueness constraint. Two sources may report readings at the same instant, and records can have their own identity and update lifecycle.

Keep real samples when downstream queries need them
Retain each source sample and its timestamp if later features may need to inspect within-record variation, compare devices, or recompute summaries. An aggregate-only import is smaller and may be sufficient for a narrowly scoped display, but it cannot recover the discarded readings. Preserve the original samples when the intended use depends on them.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Health Connect’s write guidance recommends multiple smaller interval records rather than one day-long record that is continually updated. It gives a new heart-rate record for each minute as an example, with that minute’s samples grouped inside it. The same guidance gives sample-rate examples of every five seconds and, more generally, four times a minute. These are platform examples and guidance, not a clinical standard, universal sampling policy, or requirement for a local SQLite schema. See Android’s Health Connect write-data guidance.
Choose indexes from actual query patterns
Possible starting points include an index on sample time and source, or an index on the source-record foreign key. Those are design suggestions, not vendor requirements. Measure representative queries before adding indexes: a time-range chart, a device comparison, and a record-level reimport may need different access paths. Avoid assuming that a particular index plan or table split fits every app.
Decisions the schema cannot settle for you
Platform documentation describes source fields and writing behavior, but it does not prescribe a universal local schema, index plan, backup or encryption architecture, cross-device conflict policy, retention period, legal compliance approach, or handling for malformed provider data. Define those according to the app’s behavior and the jurisdictions in which it operates. This model is data-storage guidance, not medical interpretation of heart-rate values, and it does not establish a clinical sampling standard.
