Store a Halloween animatronic by following its exact manual, removing batteries, releasing any mechanism tension only when the instructions permit it, cleaning and drying the prop, and placing the disassembled parts in a cool, dry container without anything resting on top. Keep the manual and every accessory with the prop. Those steps address the main avoidable risks identified in manufacturer and retailer care guidance: battery leakage, stressed mechanisms, damaged latex, harmed electronics, moisture, and crushed or bent components.
Start with the animatronic’s own manual
Why a universal teardown method is unsafe
Halloween animatronics can differ in frame construction, costume materials, motors, wiring, connectors, and the way sections lock together. A disassembly sequence that is harmless for one model can strain another. Read the manual before unplugging, folding, or removing any section, and keep that manual in the same container as the prop.

Use the instructions for the exact model as the authority for removable panels, connectors, fasteners, spring mechanisms, battery access, and permitted cleaning. If a care tip conflicts with the manual, use the manual or contact the manufacturer rather than forcing a part.
Use model-specific examples correctly
Home Depot’s Skelly guidance includes instructions for disassembly and later storage. That is useful when you own Skelly, but it does not establish that every animatronic breaks down in the same way. Treat every named procedure as model-specific unless your own manual confirms that the construction matches.

Prepare a clean, dry work area
Choose a place where the prop can be laid out without being stepped on or exposed to rain, condensation, food, or loose hardware. Have the manual, the original carton if you still have it, soft towels, a suitable bag or box, and labels available before you begin. A simple parts list or a few photographs of cable routing can make next season’s assembly easier; do not use photographs as a substitute for the written instructions.
Disconnect the prop from mains power or any other power source according to its manual before handling wiring or moving the frame. Avoid pulling on cables, lifting by a costume, or dragging a mechanism across the floor.
Follow this storage sequence
- Read the complete storage and disassembly section. Note which sections are meant to separate, where connectors are located, and whether the manual gives a storage position or temperature limit.
- Remove batteries for extended storage. Spirit Halloween warns that batteries can leak while a prop is stored and damage it. Open the battery compartment as the manual directs, remove every battery, and keep the batteries out of the prop during the inactive season. If the manual gives separate instructions for rechargeable packs or adapters, follow those instructions instead of applying a battery rule by guesswork.
- Release mechanism tension only when permitted. Spirit’s care guidance recommends unhooking and decompressing mechanism springs before long inactivity or storage because retained tension on welds could contribute to mechanical failure. Do this only if the model’s instructions describe the procedure. Never cut, bend, stretch, or modify a spring or linkage to make it fit a container.
- Disassemble in the documented order. Remove sections using the model’s sequence and place fasteners, pins, connectors, and small accessories in a labeled bag inside the main container. Do not assume that a part that appears removable is intended to come off.
- Clean the costume and frame gently. Spirit recommends spot-cleaning costumes by hand rather than putting them in a washing machine. Use the manual’s material instructions first. Wipe plastic surfaces with a soft towel when appropriate, and use canned air for dust in hard-to-reach joints or around electronics only when that approach is compatible with the prop’s instructions.
- Dry every part before closing the container. Leave cleaned pieces open to air until they are fully dry. Sealing a damp costume, frame, or accessory traps moisture next to materials and electronics. Do not place a prop outdoors, even if the product is described as outdoor-rated.
- Pack without pressure. Put delicate sections where they cannot be crushed, keep cables from sharp bends, and leave enough room that the lid or zipper does not press on the prop. Spirit warns that weight can damage welds or crush an animatronic.
- Seal and label the container. Keep the manual, remote controls, adapters, stakes, and mounting hardware with the prop. Label the outside with the model name and a short contents list so you can find the correct box next season without opening several containers.
Remove batteries before the long break
Battery removal is the most important electrical-storage step in the available care guidance. A battery that remains installed can leak and damage contacts or nearby components. Remove batteries even when the prop appears switched off, unless the model’s manual explicitly requires another procedure.

Follow the model’s access instructions so you do not break a latch or pull a compartment from its wiring. Keep removed batteries separate from the animatronic and handle or recycle them according to local rules. If you find corrosion or leaked material, stop and use the manufacturer’s instructions for that model; do not scrape contacts or apply a household cleaner that the manual does not approve.
Protect springs, welds, and moving mechanisms
Many props contain a moving head, arm, torso, jaw, or other mechanism. During a long inactive period, the mechanism may remain in a loaded position. Spirit advises unhooking and decompressing mechanism springs when the design and instructions allow it, explaining that ongoing tension on welds could contribute to mechanical failure.
This is not permission to improvise. Some assemblies use springs as part of their alignment or support, and removing one without instructions can create a hazard or make reassembly incorrect. If the manual does not describe a release position, leave the mechanism as specified and protect it from pressure in the container. Never place a heavy box on top of the prop to hold a section down.

Clean costumes, plastics, joints, and electronics safely
Costume fabric and latex
Use hand spot-cleaning for costume areas when the care instructions call for it. Do not machine-wash an attached costume simply because it looks like ordinary fabric; motors, wiring, foam, paint, and latex may be integrated behind it. Blot or wipe gently, then allow the piece to dry completely before packing.

Plastic and painted surfaces
A soft towel is suitable for wiping plastic when the product instructions permit it. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that could remove paint or stress a thin decorative part. Keep cleaning liquid away from switches, connectors, circuit boards, and motor openings unless the manual specifically describes a safe method.
Dust in joints and electronics
Spirit’s guidance recommends canned air for dust in hard-to-reach joints and around electronics. Use short, controlled bursts and hold a can as its label directs; do not use canned air as a replacement for the prop’s own cleaning instructions. Remove loose dust before sealing the container, because dust can make next season’s setup harder and can obscure a damaged connector.

Choose a cool, dry storage location
Spirit’s wording is direct: “Keep the animatronic in a cool (not cold), dry place during storage.” The location should be indoors and protected from water, condensation, and large temperature swings. A dry interior closet, clean room, or suitable storage area is preferable to an exposed porch, shed, or garage location that becomes very hot or cold.

Do not generalize a model-specific temperature limit
One Home Depot Halloween figurine instruction sheet tells owners to save the carton and store that figurine in a cool, dry area below 100°F. That limit belongs to that product’s instructions. It is not a universal safe temperature for every animatronic, so use a different model’s stated limit only for that model.

The original carton is usually the first container to consider when it is still clean, structurally sound, and large enough for the prop after disassembly. Its inserts may already keep sections separated. If the carton is missing or damaged, use a bag or box that fits the actual disassembled dimensions and leaves clearance around fragile parts.

Home Depot’s July 15, 2026 Halloween collection announcement names the Home Accents Holiday Décor Storage Bag and the Husky 170-Gallon Pro Grip Storage Tote as storage options. A separate listing describes the storage bag as intended for large animatronics or other Halloween products. Those references establish examples, not universal fit. Measure your own prop after disassembly and check the current container specifications before buying.
Measure the prop, not the assembled display
Write down the length, width, and height of the largest disassembled section, then account for the space needed around costumes, cables, and accessories. A container that matches the assembled height may be wasteful, while one chosen solely by gallon capacity may be too short for a frame or too shallow for a head. The lid, zipper, or closure must shut without touching a moving part.
Separate delicate parts and accessories
Use clean padding or the manufacturer’s original inserts where available. Keep masks, hands, thin decorative pieces, remotes, adapters, stakes, and fasteners from being trapped under heavier sections. Put small hardware in a sealed, labeled pouch inside the same container rather than loose at the bottom, where it can scratch plastic or disappear.

Place the manual and the parts list where they are easy to find. Keep cables coiled loosely according to the manual, with connectors protected from bending or crushing. If sections must be assembled in a particular order, pack the first-used pieces where they can be reached without unloading everything.
Label the exterior with the exact model name, the number of containers if the prop spans more than one, and any model-specific note such as “battery removed.” A photograph of the packed layout can help you restore the arrangement, but the manual remains the authority for assembly and operation.
What to do when you take the prop out next season
- Open the container in a dry area. Remove the lid or bag without dragging parts across one another.
- Read the manual again. Seasonal storage may have changed the order in which you should reinstall sections or reconnect cables; use the current model instructions.
- Check each part before assembly. Look for crushed sections, loose welds, damaged cables, leaking batteries, or other changes. Do not power a damaged prop; consult the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Remove dust carefully. Spirit recommends wiping plastic with a soft towel and clearing dust from hard-to-reach joints and electronics with canned air when appropriate.
- Reinstall batteries or power components as directed. Use the specified type and polarity, and make sure the compartment is clean and dry.
- Reassemble and test in the documented order. Keep people clear of moving parts and do not force a connector or linkage that does not align.
Common storage mistakes and the safer alternative
- Leaving batteries installed: Remove them for extended storage to reduce leakage damage.
- Guessing the disassembly order: Use the exact model manual; the Skelly procedure is not a universal template.
- Forcing a spring to release: Decompress it only when the instructions describe that operation.
- Machine-washing a costume: Follow the model’s material instructions and use hand spot-cleaning when directed.
- Closing the box while the prop is damp: Dry every cleaned section before sealing it.
- Using a container by advertised capacity alone: Compare internal dimensions with the disassembled sections and leave clearance.
- Stacking boxes on the animatronic: Keep weight off the prop to avoid crushed parts and stressed welds.
- Storing it outdoors because it is outdoor-rated: Keep it in a cool, dry indoor location; outdoor exposure still introduces moisture and temperature risks.
- Applying another product’s temperature number: Treat limits such as the below-100°F instruction for one Home Depot figurine as model-specific.
A compact end-of-season checklist
- Exact model manual located and packed with the prop.
- Power disconnected and batteries removed according to the manual.
- Spring tension released only where the design and instructions allow it.
- Costume hand spot-cleaned when appropriate; plastic and joints gently dusted.
- All cleaned parts fully dry.
- Sections disassembled in the documented order.
- Fasteners, cables, remotes, adapters, and stakes labeled and kept together.
- Container measured for the disassembled prop, with clearance around delicate parts.
- Nothing pressing on the mechanism or stacked on the container.
- Container stored indoors in a cool, dry location and labeled for retrieval.
When the manual and general advice disagree
The model manual wins. Manufacturer and retailer care pages provide useful principles—remove batteries, avoid pressure, clean gently, and store cool and dry—but they cannot replace construction-specific instructions. If the manual requires a different storage position, names a particular temperature range, or prohibits removing a component, follow that direction. When the instructions are missing, identify the exact model before dismantling it and seek the manufacturer’s documentation rather than relying on a teardown video for a different prop.
