What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The safest practical approach is to match storage to how often you need access: keep only a small spending balance in an internet-connected wallet, and consider cold storage for longer-term savings. Decide who will control the keys, create a secure wallet-specific backup, and verify every address and transaction before sending or signing. No option removes every risk: an exchange keeps custody and its own operational risks, while self-custody puts recovery and key protection in your hands.
Choose who controls your crypto
Storage is first a custody decision, not just a choice of app or device. With a custodian such as an exchange, the company holds or controls the keys and processes withdrawals under its policies. You depend on its security and solvency as well as its willingness and ability to honor withdrawals. With self-custody, you control the private keys and authorize transactions, but you are responsible for keeping the keys and recovery method safe. Bitcoin.org explains these distinct responsibilities in its wallet-security guidance.

If you leave assets with an exchange
Choose the service carefully, understand its withdrawal rules, and enable strong multifactor authentication when available. MFA can strengthen account access, but it does not remove the company’s security, solvency, or policy risks.
If you take self-custody
Make sure you can follow the wallet’s setup, backup, and recovery steps before moving a substantial balance. Losing a device may be recoverable if you have the correct backup; losing the recovery method can mean losing access. Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange for control, not the need for careful security.

Match the wallet to how you use it
| Option | Who controls access | Online exposure | Best suited to | Main responsibility or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange or other custodian | The service controls or safeguards the keys and handles withdrawals. | Account and custody depend on the service’s systems. | People who prefer a service to manage custody and withdrawals. | Assess the service’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies; protect the account with strong authentication. |
| Hot wallet | You control the keys in a self-custody wallet. | Keys are used on an internet-connected phone or computer. | Routine transactions and smaller balances. | Convenient access comes with online-device exposure; secure the device and wallet backup. |
| Cold storage | You control the keys, with signing kept offline. | Private keys are kept offline rather than on an internet-connected device. | Longer-term savings where immediate access matters less. | Requires secure offline backup and a reliable way to recover and use the wallet. |
These descriptions are general. The Bitcoin.org guidance is specifically about Bitcoin, and ethereum.org’s guidance covers Ethereum and its ecosystem; wallet features and recovery procedures vary by asset and product. Check current manufacturer documentation to confirm support for the exact coins, tokens, and networks you own.
Hot wallets for routine access
A hot wallet runs on an internet-connected phone or computer, making it convenient for frequent transactions. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday use and storing savings in a safer environment. Treat a hot wallet as a spending wallet rather than assuming it is the right place for all your holdings.

Cold storage for savings
Cold storage keeps private keys offline. One approach is offline transaction signing: an offline device signs a transaction, and a separate online device broadcasts the signed transaction. This can reduce exposure of the keys, but it still requires you to verify the transaction details and protect the offline wallet’s recovery method.
What a hardware wallet does—and does not do
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep private keys offline and authorize transactions without exposing those keys to an internet-connected computer. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as offline private-key storage with keys kept local to the device. Bitcoin.org characterizes them as a balance between security and ease of use, while noting that a separate backup is still needed to recover after device loss.

- Enhanced Backup Solution: Multi-share Backup eliminates single points of failure for secure cold wallet recovery
A hardware wallet cannot stop you from revealing a recovery phrase, approving a malicious transaction, or mishandling a backup. Buy through the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and generate the recovery phrase yourself during setup. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices may arrive with a pre-generated phrase or modified firmware; its scam guidance advises checking packaging as well.
As one concrete example rather than an endorsement, Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 listing describes offline microSD and BIP39 mnemonic backups and notes public source code and deterministic builds. The listing also places responsibility for wallet security and backup on the user. Verify current asset compatibility, firmware information, and seller authorization with the manufacturer before buying; product details and availability can change.

Protect the recovery phrase and make a usable backup
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or secret recovery phrase—is a master credential for the wallet it restores. Ethereum.org calls it the wallet’s “master key,” and Bitcoin.org warns that anyone who obtains the phrase can access the corresponding bitcoin. Treat it as a secret, not as ordinary account information.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Never share the phrase with support staff, a website, or anyone who claims to help. Legitimate support does not need your phrase or private key.
- Do not photograph or screenshot it, or store it in email, cloud storage, or a password-free note. Ethereum.org notes that screenshots may sync to cloud providers.
- Follow the wallet’s own backup and restore instructions. Wallets can differ in phrase format, additional passphrase use, derivation paths, multisignature arrangements, and recovery steps.
- Use durable offline storage in secure locations, and consider the risk of keeping the only backup in one place. A backup must remain private while still being available to you when the device is lost or damaged.
- Plan continuity: make sure a trusted person could understand how to locate the wallet and arrange recovery if you die or become unavailable, without exposing the phrase prematurely.
Bitcoin.org says many modern deterministic wallets use one recovery phrase for past and future addresses, but that is not a substitute for checking the behavior of your specific wallet. Do not assume that every wallet uses the same phrase length, passphrase rules, or restoration process.

Verify transfers and signatures before approving them
Crypto transactions can be irreversible. A mistaken address or a signature that grants unintended permissions may be difficult or impossible to undo. Slow down before every send or approval.
- Get the destination address from a trusted source, then compare the entire address—not only its first and last characters—before sending.
- Confirm the asset and network match the recipient’s instructions and the receiving wallet’s support. A correct-looking address on the wrong network can still result in an unsuccessful transfer or inaccessible funds.
- Read the wallet’s transaction or contract prompt before signing. Understand what the transaction does and what permissions it grants.
- Avoid unlimited smart-contract spending allowances when they are not necessary. Review and limit permissions rather than approving broad access by default.
- For a new destination or an unfamiliar transfer, consider sending a small test amount first, then verify receipt before sending more. A test transfer does not replace address and network checks.
Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance warns against fake support and guaranteed recovery offers. Its stated rule is: “No legitimate firm offers guaranteed cryptocurrency recovery.” If someone asks for your recovery phrase or private key, or promises to retrieve lost crypto for a guaranteed fee, do not provide credentials or funds.
Keep wallets and devices maintained
Use official wallet update channels and keep the phone or computer that interacts with the wallet up to date. Bitcoin.org recommends the latest Bitcoin software and current computer or mobile software for stability and security fixes. Avoid third-party downloads or update links sent by unsolicited messages; go to the wallet maker’s official site or app store listing you already trust.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen multisignature is worth considering
Multisignature arrangements require more than one independent approval to spend funds. Bitcoin.org gives a 3-of-5 setup as an example: a transaction needs three approvals from five keys. This can reduce the risk that compromise of one device or location alone is enough to steal funds, but it adds setup, backup, and recovery coordination. It is an advanced option for people able to maintain the arrangement, not a default requirement for every new crypto buyer.
