If your Windows 11 keyboard types the wrong characters or symbols, check the selected keyboard layout first. Select the input-language indicator on the taskbar and choose the layout you intend to use, or press Windows key + Space to switch between installed layouts. If the intended layout is missing, add it in Settings.
Switch to the correct installed keyboard layout

Click in a text field and press a key that is producing an unexpected character. A mismatch in punctuation or symbols can be a layout issue, so check Windows’ selected layout before assuming the keyboard is faulty.

Select the input-language indicator on the taskbar, then choose the keyboard layout you want. Microsoft says the indicator displays the currently selected keyboard layout.

Alternatively, press Windows key + Space to cycle through installed layouts. If nothing changes, Microsoft says only one keyboard layout is installed.

Find the relevant language, select its options, and check the Keyboards list.

If the intended layout is absent, add it from the keyboard options. Microsoft notes that a layout may be listed under a different language entry; check the entry that matches the layout you want and install that language if necessary.

You do not always need a full language pack that matches your keyboard layout. Changing a keyboard layout does not change the Windows display language, though changing the display language might also change the keyboard layout.
Remove a layout you no longer use
In the same language options, remove unwanted layouts so they do not appear when you switch. Check each language entry, because a layout can be attached to a language other than the current display language. Windows may not allow you to remove a language’s only keyboard layout; add another layout first if needed.

If the taskbar language indicator is missing

Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and check that the Input Indicator system icon is enabled.

Then open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings. If Use the desktop language bar when it’s available is enabled, Windows may show the legacy desktop language bar instead of the taskbar indicator. Turn that option off to restore the taskbar indicator and hide the legacy bar.

If your password appears to contain the wrong characters while signing in, check the selected layout on the sign-in screen. A changed display language can also change the keyboard layout, so the layout used there may differ from the one you expect.
When the problem is with Microsoft IME
If the issue occurs while composing text through Microsoft IME, rather than with a standard keyboard layout, use the IME’s own settings. Microsoft documents an option to revert to the previous IME version as a compatibility measure for encountered IME issues; it is not a general remedy for every layout mismatch. Use the On-Screen Keyboard as a fallback
For temporary typing or an accessibility alternative, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and enable On-Screen Keyboard. Windows includes this built-in keyboard; using it does not, by itself, diagnose a physical keyboard problem. See Microsoft’s On-Screen Keyboard instructions.
If the correct layout is selected but characters are still wrong
The Windows guidance above does not establish a universal cause when the intended layout is active. Check whether the unexpected characters occur in one app or across Windows. If the problem persists across apps, use support for your specific device or keyboard rather than treating a layout mismatch as proof of hardware failure.
