Keep bagged cement in a dry, leak-proof enclosed space, raised on a stable pallet or platform and away from exterior walls. Protect it from water and damp floors, keep stacks stable, and use older stock first. Before use, inspect each bag: hard or stony lumps are a warning of moisture damage, not something a cover or additive can reverse.
Choose a dry, enclosed storage space
Use a roofed store with no leaks, water pooling, or dampness that could reach the bags. Check the floor and roof before delivery, and fix leaks or drainage problems rather than relying on a cover to compensate. Keep bags close together within a stack to limit air circulation, but leave enough access to inspect and remove them safely.

Keep stacks clear of exterior walls. An Indian Institute of Management Bangalore tender document reproducing a construction specification calls for at least 600 mm of clearance from exterior walls; this is guidance from that specification, not a universal code. Follow the requirements for your project and location.

Raise bags and stack them safely
Do not place cement bags directly on soil or a floor that may be damp. Use a stable pallet or raised platform so moisture cannot wick into the bags from below. The same IIM Bangalore tender document specifies 150–200 mm of clearance above the floor. Aalborg White gives a separate recommendation of pallets or a counterfloor 10–20 cm above the regular floor. These are source-specific examples; use the applicable project requirements rather than treating either figure as universal.

Stack bags on a firm, level base and avoid tall or unstable piles. The cited tender document sets a maximum stack height of ten bags; follow your governing specification if it sets a different limit. Keep bags together within each stack without compromising stability or safe handling.
Protect against rain and prolonged storage
In monsoon conditions or when storage will be unusually long, add an intact waterproof polyethylene cover over the stack, including its top. A cover is supplemental protection, not a substitute for a dry enclosed store. Check it for tears and arrange it so rain cannot collect against the bags or enter from below. Keep any pallet wrapping intact where it is supplied.

Keep different cement types and batches identifiable and separated where applicable. Record receipt or manufacture dates, and issue the oldest usable stock first. This reduces the chance that bags remain forgotten at the back of a stack while newer deliveries are used.

Check packaging when cement arrives and examine bags again before use. Hard, stony lumps indicate that moisture may have reached the cement. A construction specification says lumpy bags should be removed; Aalborg White warns that cement containing stony lumps should not be used because its strength cannot be guaranteed. Do not rely on breaking up hardened lumps to make the cement usable. If a bag’s condition is uncertain, set it aside and consult the product manufacturer or project engineer.
How long can cement be stored?
There is no universal storage-life figure established for every cement product and condition. Cement Australia’s guidance gives an approximately six-month recommended shelf life from manufacture for its cementitious products. That is product-specific guidance, not a guarantee for all cement. Check the date, packaging, label, and manufacturer’s instructions for the particular product; storage conditions also matter. If cement has become hard or stony-lumped, do not use it simply because it is within a stated date range.
