Protect LEGO bricks from heat, sunlight, and moisture
For loose bricks, LEGO recommends dry storage away from heat sources. Its guidance warns that temperatures above 40°C (104°F) or direct sunlight can make bricks brittle or discolored over time. These precautions also make sense for an assembled model on display: avoid windows with strong direct sun, radiators, and other heat sources.

For loose pieces, the right container depends on how you organize your collection and how much you have. LEGO lists clear bins, tool or craft boxes, sandwich bags, plastic drawer systems, food containers, LEGO storage bricks, and minifigure display cases. Sorting by color, set, size, or type is a matter of convenience, not a preservation requirement. LEGO’s storage guidance does not specify a humidity target or a special packing method for long-term storage of assembled sets.
Measure the model before choosing a shelf or cabinet
Start with the set’s official dimensions, then measure the actual build and the space where it will go. Include stands and parts that extend beyond the main body—such as masts, wings, or open doors—and leave enough room to place and remove the model without catching or pressing on those parts. LEGO’s display guide illustrates the scale involved with an Artemis launch-system model listed at 70 cm tall and the Titanic at 135 cm long.

Possible display formats include shelves, plinths, glass showcases, and custom shelving. Whatever the style, verify the interior width, depth, and height and check the furniture’s load rating and stability. For wall-mounted shelves, check the mounting and anchoring requirements. LEGO’s guide offers display ideas but does not publish furniture load ratings or installation specifications; confirm those details with the furniture maker or installer.
Choose between an open shelf and a covered display
An open shelf gives easy access, but dust settles directly on the model. A glass or transparent enclosure can reduce dust settling on the build, though it adds cost and can make access and cleaning less convenient. Check that the model fits inside with clearance for protruding parts and for safe removal; a tight case can press on fragile details or fail to protect them.

For scale, LEGO’s Play and Display Case – Blue (model 5006157) measures 39 cm wide × 14 cm deep × 19 cm high. That is a small-case example, not a general solution for large builds. Check the official listing’s dimensions against your model rather than assuming the case will fit.

Compare display locations before committing
- Fit: Check clear interior dimensions, including stands and overhangs, and allow room to retrieve the model.
- Support: Confirm the load rating and stability; assess anchoring for wall-mounted furniture.
- Dust and access: Decide whether an enclosure is worth the added cost and whether doors or openings allow safe cleaning and removal.
- Placement: Keep the display away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other heat sources.
- Viewing and upkeep: Consider the viewing angle, lighting, door access, and whether you can rearrange the display without handling the model awkwardly.

LEGO recommends hand cleaning with water at or below 40°C (104°F), using a soft cloth or sponge. You may add mild detergent, then rinse with clear water. Do not put bricks in a dishwasher or washing machine, and do not use an oven, microwave, or hair dryer. Avoid drying pieces in direct sunlight: heat can change their shape. When cleaning a large assembled model, work gently with a cloth or sponge rather than moving or lifting the build unnecessarily.
