When a removable retainer is out of your mouth, put it in its case. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a sturdy, ventilated case and advises keeping the appliance away from pets, heat and harsh cleaners. Follow your orthodontist’s instructions for cleaning and storage, since the sources do not establish one dry-or-damp rule for every retainer.
Store a retainer in its case whenever it is out
After removing a retainer, clean or rinse it as directed for your appliance, then put it in its designated case. The AAO advises against leaving it exposed or wrapping it in a napkin: a case helps protect it from damage and makes it less likely to be misplaced. As the AAO puts it, “If it’s not in your face, it should be in your case.”

The AAO recommends a sturdy, ventilated case for carrying and safe storage. When choosing one, check that it closes securely, allows ventilation, and fits the specific retainer without forcing or bending it. These are practical selection criteria, not product-test findings.

Keep the retainer away from pets and heat
Store the case somewhere cool and protected. The AAO warns that pets may chew retainers, and that heat from heaters, hot stoves or hot cars can damage or warp an appliance. Do not leave a retainer where a pet can reach it or in a hot vehicle.
Clean gently and follow appliance-specific instructions
Cleaning guidance can vary by retainer, so use the instructions from your orthodontist rather than assuming one routine fits every device. Avoid bleach and other harsh chemicals. Do not use hot water, alcohol, dishwasher cycles or improvised cleaners. Retainer-cleaning solution may be an option, but use it only as directed for your appliance and in line with your orthodontist’s advice.

Should a retainer be stored dry or damp?
There is no universal dry-versus-damp storage rule established for all retainer materials in the cited AAO guidance. Follow the directions supplied for your retainer or ask your orthodontist what is appropriate for that appliance.
