How to Store a Down Jacket to Protect Its Loft

Keep a down jacket completely dry and uncompressed between trips. Hanging, laying flat, or folding loosely are all suitable options.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store a down jacket completely dry and loose—not compressed in its stuff sack—in a cool, dry place. Hanging is convenient, but laying it flat or folding it loosely also works. The key is to avoid keeping it compressed for long periods.

That rule applies whether you are putting the jacket away for a few weeks between trips or for an entire season. Packing it tightly is useful while you are carrying it; leaving it packed tightly in a closet is a different use. Before storage, check the jacket’s own care label, make sure no moisture remains, and choose a position that lets the insulation stay expanded.

Why long-term compression is best avoided

Down jackets are designed to be packed for carrying, but their stuff sacks are not the right place for extended storage. Montane recommends storing down garments loose rather than in their stuff sacks, and Odlo advises against storing down compressed for long periods. Neither gives a specific time limit or quantifies how much loft may be affected, so there is no evidence-based number of days after which compression becomes harmful. The practical rule is simple: use the stuff sack for transport, then take the jacket out when you reach your destination or put it away at home.

This is guidance against prolonged compression, not a claim that every compressed jacket is permanently damaged. Keep the garment uncompressed when it is not being carried, and avoid tight folds or heavy stacks that hold it down. A jacket can be folded for storage if the fold is loose and nothing keeps pressing it flat; “folded” does not have to mean tightly rolled or packed into the smallest possible space.

Long-term storage and short-term packing serve different purposes. A stuff sack or compression bag saves room in a backpack or luggage for a journey. At home, there is usually no benefit to taking up less space at the expense of keeping the jacket compressed. Remove it from the travel sack when you unpack, and return the sack to its role as a carrying accessory.

Choose a storage method that leaves the jacket loose

Method Manufacturer guidance When it works well
Hang on a hanger Recommended by Mountain Designs and UNIQLO; also accepted by Marmot and Haglöfs. Closet space is available. Leave enough room that other clothes do not crowd or press the jacket.
Lay flat or fold loosely Odlo allows laying the jacket flat; Marmot says folding is also suitable. Hanging space is limited. Avoid tight folds and do not place a heavy stack on top.
Use a breathable storage bag UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag, and Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag. You want dust protection. The cover is optional; it should not squeeze the jacket.
Leave it in a stuff sack or compression bag Montane and Odlo advise against long-term compressed storage. Use for carrying or short-term packing, not as the jacket’s storage place between trips.

You do not need to buy a storage bag: a suitable closet or shelf is enough if the jacket stays dry and uncompressed. If you do use a cover, choose a breathable one with enough room for the garment to remain loose. A breathable garment bag or loose cotton bag is for dust protection, not for squeezing the jacket into a smaller package.

Hanging: the easiest option when there is room

Hanging makes it easy to keep the jacket open and accessible. Use the closet space available to you, but do not wedge the down jacket between tightly packed garments. Crowding can hold it compressed even when it is technically on a hanger. Leave enough clearance for the jacket to remain loose, and select a storage location that also meets the requirements for dryness, cool temperature and protection from direct sunlight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hanging is not a requirement. It is simply the most convenient method for many closets. Mountain Designs and UNIQLO recommend it, while Marmot and Haglöfs also accept it among their storage options. If a particular jacket’s own instructions specify a different approach, those instructions take priority.

Laying flat or folding loosely

Flat storage is useful when a closet is full or when a shelf provides a better cool, dry location. Odlo allows laying a down jacket flat, and Marmot says folding works. Keep the fold relaxed rather than sharply compressing the garment into a small bundle. Do not put a heavy pile of clothing or equipment on top, because that defeats the purpose of loose storage.

For a shelf, make sure the jacket has enough space around it to remain uncrushed. A loose fold is compatible with seasonal storage; a tight fold held under weight is not. If you are uncertain whether a shelf is too crowded, choose a less congested location or hang the jacket instead.

Breathable bags are optional

UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag, and Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag. Either can protect the outer fabric from dust while allowing you to keep the jacket in a closet or on a shelf. The bag is not essential. A jacket stored loose in a suitable closet or shelf already meets the central requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse a breathable cover with a compression sack. A garment bag or cotton bag should be roomy, not cinched around the jacket. If the cover makes the jacket noticeably flatter or forces it into a tight shape, it is being used as a compression container rather than as loose dust protection.

Pick a cool, dry place

Haglöfs recommends storing insulation in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UNIQLO likewise recommends a cool, dry, dark place for long-term storage. A closet or shelf that meets those conditions is a practical choice. Avoid putting the jacket away while damp, or choosing a storage spot that is persistently humid or exposed to direct sun.

“Cool and dry” does not require a special storage cabinet. It means choosing an ordinary indoor location that is not regularly damp and is not exposed to strong sunlight. A dark closet can satisfy the additional long-term-storage guidance from UNIQLO. If you use a shelf, check that it is not under a source of persistent moisture and that other items will not press heavily on the jacket.

Sunlight is a reason to move a jacket away from an exposed window or bright, unprotected area. The manufacturer guidance specifically calls for keeping insulation away from direct sunlight; there is no need to create a complicated storage system when a shaded closet is available.

Make sure the jacket is fully dry before storing

Dry storage is a consistent point in guidance from Marmot, Odlo, Haglöfs, and UNIQLO. If the jacket has been worn in wet weather or washed, do not put it away until it is thoroughly dry. Check the care label for the approved drying method; instructions vary by garment.

Do not treat “mostly dry” as good enough for seasonal storage. Wait until the jacket is thoroughly dry according to its care instructions, then store it loose. If it was worn in wet weather, allow the approved drying process to finish before placing it in a closet, on a shelf or in a storage bag. If it was washed, follow the label rather than assuming that the same drying process used for another down jacket is appropriate.

Drying and storage are connected but not interchangeable. A breathable bag cannot make a damp jacket ready for storage, and hanging a wet jacket in a crowded closet does not satisfy the dry-storage guidance. Complete the drying step first, then choose the storage position.

If it needs washing or loft recovery

Do not wash a jacket just because you are storing it. Haglöfs says frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils, recommends airing the garment regularly, and advises washing when needed. Follow the jacket’s care label and maker’s instructions for whether and how to clean it.

That means pre-storage washing is not a universal checklist item. If the jacket is clean and only needs to be put away, airing it and confirming that it is dry may be all that is needed. If it has dirt or another condition that genuinely requires cleaning, use the care label and the manufacturer’s method. Do not substitute a generic washing routine for garment-specific instructions.

Some manufacturers describe low-heat tumble drying with dryer balls as a way to help restore loft, but it is not a universal instruction. Montane’s down-aftercare guidance describes low-heat tumble drying with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, checking periodically, and shaking the jacket once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. Use such methods only if your jacket’s care label permits tumble drying, and follow its specific directions. If it does not permit machine drying, do not override the label.

These instructions are maker-specific examples, not permission to use heat on every down garment. Check the label first, use only the stated heat setting or method, and monitor the process as directed. Montane’s guidance includes periodic checks and shaking the garment once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. Do not add dryer balls or tennis balls as a substitute for checking whether machine drying is allowed.

A simple storage routine

  1. Check the care label. Use it to determine any cleaning or drying requirements; do not assume all down jackets can be washed or tumble-dried the same way.
  2. Air or clean only as needed. Do not make washing a routine pre-storage step. Haglöfs recommends regular airing and washing when needed because frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils.
  3. Dry the jacket completely. If it has been wet or washed, wait until it is thoroughly dry before putting it away. Use only the drying method permitted by the label.
  4. Choose a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. A dark place is also recommended by UNIQLO for long-term storage.
  5. Select a loose position. Hang it, lay it flat, or fold it loosely. Keep it out of tight stuff sacks, compression bags and heavy stacks.
  6. Prevent crowding. Leave enough room on the hanger or shelf that neighboring clothes and stored items do not press the jacket flat.
  7. Add a breathable cover only if useful. A roomy garment bag or loose cotton bag can limit dust, but it is optional and must not compress the jacket.
  8. Keep the travel sack for travel. Store the stuff sack separately or use it only when packing the jacket for a trip.

Seasonal storage: a practical checklist

At the end of a trip or season, start by taking the jacket out of its stuff sack. Inspect whether it was exposed to wet weather and consult the care label before deciding whether any cleaning is necessary. If it needs airing, do that before storage. If it needs washing, follow the jacket maker’s directions and complete the approved drying process.

Once dry, choose between hanging, laying flat and loose folding. The best choice is the one that leaves the garment uncompressed in a cool, dry place. Hanging is convenient when the closet has room. Flat or loosely folded storage is suitable when shelf space is better. A breathable bag can be added for dust protection, but buying one is optional.

Before closing the closet or shelf, look for the common storage mistakes: a still-damp jacket, a tight stuff sack, a compression bag, a heavy stack on top, a crowded rail or direct sunlight. Correct those conditions rather than trying to compensate with extra products. The manufacturers’ core advice is about dryness, looseness and a suitable location.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leaving it in the stuff sack between trips

The stuff sack is useful for carrying and short-term packing. Montane and Odlo advise against keeping down compressed for long periods. Unpack the jacket when you return and store it loose.

Assuming a breathable bag is a compression bag

A breathable garment bag or loose cotton storage bag is optional dust protection. It should have enough room for the jacket to remain loose. Do not cinch it tightly or replace it with a compression sack for seasonal storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Putting it away damp

Marmot, Odlo, Haglöfs and UNIQLO all emphasize dry storage or complete drying before storage. If the jacket was wet or washed, finish the label-approved drying process first.

Washing automatically before storage

Haglöfs recommends airing regularly and washing when needed, noting that frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils. Cleaning is not an automatic pre-storage requirement. Let the care label and the jacket’s actual condition determine what you do.

Using a generic drying recipe

Low-heat tumble drying with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls appears in Montane’s guidance, and low or no heat with tennis balls appears in Mountain Designs’ guidance. These are not universal instructions. If the label does not permit tumble drying, do not use it; if it does, follow the specified settings and directions.

Stacking heavy items over a folded jacket

Folding is supported by Marmot, but a tight fold or a heavy stack can keep the jacket compressed. Keep the fold loose and place it where other stored items will not press on it.

Frequently asked questions

How should I store my down jacket?

Store it completely dry and loose in a cool, dry place. Hang it, lay it flat or fold it loosely. Do not leave it compressed in its stuff sack for long-term storage.

Can I store a down jacket in its stuff sack?

Use the stuff sack for carrying or short-term packing, not as the jacket’s storage place between trips. Montane recommends storing down garments loose, and Odlo advises against long-term compressed storage.

Is hanging better than folding?

Neither is the only supported method. Mountain Designs and UNIQLO recommend hanging, while Odlo allows laying flat and Marmot says folding works. Choose whichever method leaves the jacket loose and uncrushed in a suitable location.

Can I fold my jacket for the summer?

Yes, Marmot says folding is suitable, provided the fold is loose. Do not make a tight bundle or put a heavy stack on top. A flat position is also supported by Odlo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a special storage bag?

No. A suitable closet or shelf is enough. UNIQLO suggests a breathable garment bag and Haglöfs suggests a loose cotton storage bag if you want dust protection, but the cover is optional and must not compress the garment.

Should the storage bag be airtight?

The cited guidance supports a breathable garment bag or loose cotton storage bag, not an airtight or compression container. Use a roomy, breathable cover if you use one, and keep the jacket loose.

Should I wash the jacket before putting it away?

Not automatically. Haglöfs advises airing the garment regularly and washing when needed because frequent washing can remove down’s natural oils. Check the jacket’s care label and clean it only when the garment and its instructions call for it.

How do I restore loft before storage?

First check the care label. Montane describes low-heat tumble drying with two or three dryer balls or tennis balls, periodic checks and shaking the jacket once dry. Mountain Designs describes low or no heat with tennis balls. Use these methods only when the specific jacket permits tumble drying and follow its directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How dry does the jacket need to be?

It should be thoroughly dry before storage. Marmot, Odlo, Haglöfs and UNIQLO all emphasize dry storage or complete drying. Do not rely on a breathable bag or a closet to finish drying a damp jacket.

Where is the best place to store it?

Choose a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UNIQLO additionally recommends a dark place for long-term storage. A closet or shelf is suitable when it is not persistently humid, sun-exposed or crowded.

Is a compression sack ever appropriate?

Compression is appropriate for carrying when you need to save space. Manufacturer guidance warns against using compressed storage for long periods. Remove the jacket from the compression sack when you are no longer packing it for transport.

Can other clothes touch the jacket on a hanger?

Some contact is unavoidable, but do not crowd the jacket so neighboring clothes press it flat. Leave enough closet space for it to remain loose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I have no hanging space?

Lay the jacket flat or fold it loosely on a suitable shelf. Odlo supports laying it flat and Marmot supports folding. Keep it dry, avoid heavy stacks and do not hold it in a tight fold.

Bottom line

Before long-term storage, follow the jacket’s own care label, clean it only when needed and make sure it is completely dry. Then take it out of its stuff sack and keep it loose in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Hang it, lay it flat or fold it loosely; a breathable garment bag or loose cotton bag is optional. The consistent manufacturer message is simple: use compression for transport, not for storing your down jacket between trips.
