Keep your crypto recovery phrase offline as a private physical backup. Write it in the exact order generated by your wallet, then protect it from both discovery and damage. Do not photograph it, email it, save it in cloud storage, or type it into an ordinary app or website.
What a recovery phrase is—and why it must stay private
A recovery phrase, also called a wallet backup or recovery seed, is an ordered list of words that can restore access to a wallet. Anyone who obtains it may be able to access the funds it protects, so treat the words like a key rather than a reminder or account detail.

Offline means there is no digital copy. That rules out photos and screenshots, email drafts, cloud drives, shared folders, password-manager notes, and entering the words into an app or website. Trezor warns: “Never make a digital copy of your wallet backup (this includes Dropbox, email, encrypted folders, or photos).” Trezor’s wallet-backup guidance also says not to type the backup into an app or site.

How to make a physical backup
- Use the wallet’s generated backup. Record every word exactly as shown and keep the original order. Avoid dictating the words aloud where someone could hear or record them.
- Write it on a backup card or paper. This is a straightforward offline option. Trezor provides wallet backup card guidance for handwritten backups. Keep the completed card private; do not scan, photograph, or copy it into a digital note.
- Check the record carefully. Compare the handwritten words and their sequence with the wallet’s device-confirmed backup instructions. A transcription error can make recovery difficult or impossible.
- Consider metal if greater physical durability matters. Metal may withstand damage that destroys paper, but it does not prevent theft or discovery. Choose a product only after checking that its format and word count match the backup generated by your wallet.

Choose a location with both security and recovery in mind
There is no universally safest hiding place. Consider the risks in your home and the chance that you could forget where the backup is. A safe can protect against casual access, but a conspicuous safe may attract attention; Trezor advises considering a discreet location in its wallet-backup safety guidance.

Check the wallet format before choosing a metal backup
Word count alone is not enough: backup standards differ. Trezor says BIP39 backups may use 12 or 24 words, while SLIP39 backups use 20 words. Its product examples are format-specific:

What to do if someone asks for the phrase
Do not send the words to customer support or to anyone claiming they can help recover funds. Trezor says it will never ask for the wallet backup and advises users to enter it only when prompted by their Trezor device. A device-confirmed recovery flow is not the same as typing the phrase into a web page or computer prompt. Ledger’s hardware-wallet security guidance, updated May 7, 2024, likewise says not to share a 24-word phrase or store it online.

If you think the phrase has been exposed, treat it as compromised and follow the official emergency instructions for your wallet. The appropriate replacement or migration steps depend on the wallet; do not assume one procedure applies to every product.
