Which catalog fits what you watch?
Apple TV: Apple Originals and selected sports
Apple describes its subscription as a service for Apple Original shows and movies, with new releases weekly and no ads. Its US service page lists Friday Night Baseball and says that, beginning in 2026, the service includes every Major League Soccer match and Formula 1 Grand Prix in the US. Sports schedules and rights are time-sensitive; availability can differ by location.

Netflix: movies, series and games
Netflix describes its plans as providing access to movies, TV shows and games. On Standard with ads, a lock icon marks some titles that are unavailable because of licensing restrictions. Check the catalog in your country for the exact shows, films or games you care about; the service descriptions alone do not establish which library is larger or better for a particular viewer.
How much should ads and monthly cost matter?
Netflix Standard with ads has the lowest listed monthly price in this comparison, but it includes advertising and does not offer every title. Netflix Standard costs more and is ad-free, while Premium costs more again and adds 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Apple TV costs more than Netflix Standard with ads but is described by Apple as ad-free. Compare the plan you would actually use—not just the entry price—and account for any existing bundle or package that changes your incremental cost.

If you already subscribe to Apple One, Apple says Apple TV is included in that bundle, which may affect the additional cost of access for you. Netflix may also be billed through third-party packages. The cited pages do not establish a combined Apple TV and Netflix package.

Apple says an Apple TV subscription can be shared with up to five family members, but its retrieved US page does not state how many devices can stream simultaneously. That family-sharing limit is not a published concurrent-stream limit.

Netflix describes account use in terms of a household: devices connected to the internet at the main residence. Its listed plans support two simultaneous devices on Standard with ads and Standard, and four on Premium. Eligible extra-member slots are separate from those simultaneous-device limits.

Premium is the only Netflix plan in this comparison that lists 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Netflix says 4K playback requires a plan that supports 4K, a compatible 4K display, an HDMI connection using HDCP 2.2 or later, a steady internet connection of at least 15 megabits per second, and playback quality set to High. If your display or setup cannot meet those requirements—or you do not care about 4K—the Premium tier’s video upgrade may not be useful to you. An HDMI cable by itself does not guarantee 4K: the TV port and connection must support the required HDCP capability too.

Do you need an Apple TV 4K device?
No. Apple TV 4K is optional streaming hardware, not the Apple TV subscription. Apple’s store listing says the device supports apps including Netflix. A compatible smart TV, game console, streaming stick or other existing device may already run both apps, so check what you own before buying another streamer. Apple lists Wi-Fi 64 GB and Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128 GB configurations; check its Apple TV 4K store listing for current models and availability.
Which service should you choose?
- Lean toward Apple TV if the Apple Originals or US sports programming listed on Apple’s page are what you want, and you value an ad-free subscription.
- Lean toward Netflix Standard with ads if keeping the monthly price lower is more important than avoiding ads or having access to every title on that tier.
- Consider Netflix Standard if you want Netflix without ads and do not need Premium’s listed 4K/HDR features or four-device simultaneous viewing.
- Consider Netflix Premium if you want its 4K Ultra HD and HDR tier, or need its higher simultaneous-device and download limits.
- Consider both if each has programming your household wants. One subscription does not include the other service’s catalog.
Before deciding, verify the exact titles and sports available where you live, the current plan price, whether ads are acceptable, how many people need access, and whether your screens and connection support the video quality you would pay for.
