To stop YouTube saving new searches, pause search history by turning off Include your searches on YouTube. On desktop, use Google My Activity; in the YouTube app on Android or iPhone and iPad, open Settings → Manage all history → Controls. Pausing affects future searches only—it does not erase searches already saved.
Pause YouTube search history on desktop
- Go to YouTube’s computer instructions for search history and open the My Activity controls. Sign in if prompted.
- Select Saving your search history.
- Unselect Include your searches on YouTube.
YouTube says searches entered while this setting is paused won’t be saved in search history.

Pause search history in the YouTube app
Android
- Sign in to the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings → Manage all history → Controls.
- Unselect Include your searches on YouTube. See YouTube’s Android instructions.
iPhone and iPad
- Sign in to the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings → Manage all history → Controls.
- Unselect Include your searches on YouTube. See YouTube’s iPhone and iPad instructions.
Menu wording can vary by app version or language. If you do not see the exact labels, look for YouTube History or Google My Activity controls.

Pause future saving or delete past searches?
Pausing prevents future searches from being saved while the setting remains off; it does not remove searches already recorded. To clear earlier activity, open My Activity on desktop or Manage all history in the app. You can delete individual searches, find particular entries, browse by date, or choose a broader DELETE action.

Check the date range before using DELETE: YouTube says deleting search history for a selected period also deletes watch history from that period. Search and watch history have separate controls, but a time-based deletion can affect both. YouTube’s computer instructions for watch history explain its separate settings.
Other ways to limit saved searches

Clearing search history also removes past searches as suggestions in the search box. YouTube says deleted search entries will no longer influence recommendations.
