If your TV keeps switching to another input, an HDMI device may be sending an automatic HDMI-CEC command when it wakes, starts casting, or changes state. The device can sometimes trigger a switch even while it is in standby. Find the input the TV changes to, identify the device connected to that port, then test the relevant HDMI-CEC or automatic-input setting for your TV model.
Why a TV changes inputs without a button press
HDMI-CEC lets compatible devices send control commands to one another over an HDMI connection. Depending on the devices and their settings, a streaming box, game console, soundbar, or other connected device can tell the TV to switch to its HDMI port when it turns on or is used. Google notes that casting to a CEC-supported TV from another source can switch the TV to the connected Google streaming device’s HDMI input. Google’s HDMI-CEC help page explains the feature.

The signal does not have to come from a device you just turned on. LG says a connected device in standby may signal the TV, while Samsung warns that an external device can send an erroneous switching signal. That makes the HDMI device connected to the input that appears a useful first suspect, not proof that the TV itself is faulty.

- When the input changes, note the source name or HDMI port shown on the TV screen.
- Check which device is connected to that port. Note whether it woke, began casting, or changed state just before the switch.
- For a short diagnostic test, temporarily turn off HDMI-CEC on the TV or suspected device, then observe whether the switching stops. Change one setting at a time so you can identify what made a difference.
- If the suspected external device appears to be triggering the change, check for and install its available firmware update. Samsung recommends updating the device when it sends an erroneous signal.
If the TV continues switching with CEC disabled, the cause is not established by these CEC troubleshooting steps. Check the model-specific manual or contact the TV maker rather than assuming that every unexplained input change has the same cause.

Find HDMI-CEC under your TV brand’s name
TV makers use different names for HDMI-CEC, and menu locations vary by model, software version, and remote. Look in the TV’s settings for the brand term below, or search the TV manual for “HDMI-CEC” and “automatic input switching.” These names identify related control features; they do not guarantee that every model supports every behavior.
- Samsung: Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC). Samsung says connected devices can tell the TV they have turned on, prompting a switch to that source by default. Its instructions differ for infrared remotes and Bluetooth smart remotes, so use the support instructions for your TV and remote rather than applying a button sequence from another model.
- LG: SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC). LG’s guide covers disabling SIMPLINK, Quick Start+, and saved connection history, with paths that vary by webOS generation.
- Sony: BRAVIA Link or BRAVIA Sync. Sony says turning BRAVIA Sync off can prevent automatic switching to the last input used by a connected HDMI-CEC device. Sony also describes “Auto Input Change (MHL),” but that setting is for MHL devices and should not be treated as a general fix for ordinary HDMI sources.
- Other names: Sharp uses Aquos Link; Toshiba, CE-Link or Regza Link; Panasonic, HDAVI Control, EZ-Sync, or VIERA Link; Philips, EasyLink; Mitsubishi, Realink for HDMI; and Hitachi, HDMI-CEC. Google’s CEC overview lists these common names.
Turn off the relevant CEC or automatic-switch feature as a test, then see whether the TV stays on the selected input. Use the television maker’s current instructions for the exact setting and procedure; the same brand can use different menus across models.

LG-specific steps for SIMPLINK switching
For LG TVs, LG’s US support article, published September 28, 2026, describes SIMPLINK/HDMI-CEC, signals from connected devices in standby, and temporary saved connection information as possible causes. It documents three additional checks: turn off SIMPLINK, turn off Quick Start+, and delete saved connection history. What changes when you turn CEC off?
Disabling CEC can stop connected devices from requesting an input change, but it can also remove HDMI control conveniences. Google describes CEC as a way to control HDMI devices with one remote, and LG says turning SIMPLINK off prevents connected devices from signaling input changes. If you rely on one-remote control or other device coordination, decide whether that convenience is worth keeping; you can also test CEC on the TV or a suspected device separately before disabling it throughout the setup.

When to contact support
If the TV still changes inputs after you have tried the model-specific CEC steps, checked the suspected device, and followed any applicable LG Quick Start+ or connection-history instructions, contact the TV maker or a qualified technician. Provide the TV model, software version, input that appears, and the devices connected to it; those details help support narrow down a problem that the documented CEC settings did not resolve. LG also recommends contacting support or a technician if its troubleshooting does not fix the issue.
