To keep your Samsung Galaxy screen on longer, go to Settings > Display > Screen timeout and select a longer duration. On Samsung’s current Gulf guidance, the choices run from 15 seconds to 10 minutes. For hands-free reading, you can also enable Keep screen on while viewing if your model offers it.
Change the screen timeout
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Screen timeout.
- Select a longer available duration. Samsung Gulf lists options from 15 seconds to 10 minutes in its guidance updated June 23, 2026: Samsung Gulf: How to adjust screen timeout on a Galaxy phone.
The timeout is the period of inactivity before the main display turns off. The exact choices and menu labels can vary by model, software version, and country.

Keep the screen on while you are looking at it
If you are reading without touching the phone, look for Keep screen on while viewing. Samsung says this feature uses the front-facing camera to detect your face. Depending on the phone and software, it may be under Settings > Display or Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures. Screen timeout controls the main display after inactivity; it does not change the lock screen’s separate timing. Samsung Canada says timeout cannot be disabled entirely and recommends one minute or less to help save power. Its support page, updated October 25, 2025, does not quantify the battery difference: Samsung Canada: Change the screen timeout on your Samsung Galaxy to save power.

If the screen goes dark during a video
Check whether the video is playing full-screen. Samsung says full-screen playback in apps such as YouTube, Netflix, and Samsung Gallery typically keeps the display on, while video in a smaller browser window may still time out. Samsung Canada’s screen-use troubleshooting guidance covers this behavior.
