What the Mate 90 Pro Max camera offers
Huawei lists three rear cameras: a 50 MP variable-aperture main camera (F1.4–F4.0) with optical image stabilization (OIS) and an RYYB sensor; a 40 MP ultrawide camera (F2.2) with an RYYB sensor; and a 200 MP large-sensor telephoto camera (F2.6) with OIS, tele-macro, and an RYYB sensor. Start with light and a steady moment
Put enough light on the subject’s face where possible. In dim conditions, hold the phone steadily and ask the subject to pause during capture. OIS is listed for the main and telephoto cameras, but stabilization cannot guarantee sharpness when a person moves.

Focus on the face and check the eyes
Keep the face inside the focus area and confirm that the eyes look sharp before taking more pictures. Autofocus is listed, but checking the result helps catch a missed focus point rather than assuming the feature has locked onto the face.
Compare Portrait mode with a standard photo
Try Portrait mode for its portrait rendering, then inspect the subject’s outline and background blur. If an edge looks cut out or the blur distracts from the subject, take a standard photo to compare. Huawei lists portrait and blur features, but does not publish a tested result showing that they improve every portrait.

Use distance to manage facial perspective
When space permits, step back and use a moderate telephoto framing instead of holding the phone very close to the face. This can help avoid the exaggerated perspective close camera distances create. Huawei specifies the telephoto camera and zoom options, but does not provide a tested portrait-distance recommendation.
How to take sharper zoom photos
Huawei distinguishes among approximate 4× optical zoom, 8× optical-quality zoom, and digital zoom up to 100×. These labels do not mean every setting produces the same detail: Huawei does not provide independent image-quality measurements across the zoom range. Huawei’s camera specifications

- For a distant subject, begin with the telephoto camera’s framing or the listed optical-quality zoom step.
- Hold the phone firmly, bring the subject into focus, and capture the image. The telephoto camera has listed OIS, but a moving subject may still blur.
- Use digital zoom when the composition calls for a tighter view, not because 100× is specified as an equivalent-detail setting.
- Review the photo at full size to check whether it has the detail you need.
Is the Ruiying Z10 camera module necessary?
No for ordinary portraits or zoom photos. Huawei describes the Ruiying Z10 modular camera as offering a 24–240 mm range and 10× continuous optical zoom, but says its photography and video functions require the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition. It is an optional, edition-specific accessory, not a requirement for standard owners. Huawei product page

The published specifications establish which cameras and modes Huawei lists, not independent sharpness, noise, or portrait-edge performance. The practical advice above is general photography technique, not a hands-on test of this phone.
