If verification-code texts are disappearing, check Google Messages’ OTP auto-delete setting and turn it off. If entire conversations or older messages are missing, check Archived and Trash, then look for a message-limit setting only if you use an older app or device. Android does not have one universal old-message deletion switch, so the right fix depends on what disappeared.
How do I stop my Android phone from deleting old messages?
Start by identifying whether you lost one-time passcodes, a whole conversation, or older messages within a thread. Those symptoms point to different settings. Before changing anything, back up messages you need to keep.

Turn off automatic cleanup of verification codes
In Google Messages, tap your profile icon and look under Messages settings > Message organization for Auto-delete OTPs after 24 hours. Turn it off if it is enabled and the missing texts are one-time passwords or verification codes. Android Authority documented this route on a Pixel 7a running Android 14; the label, location, or control may differ or be absent on other app and Android versions. This setting is specifically about OTP messages, not ordinary conversations.
Check Archived conversations
In Google Messages, open More > Archived. Archiving removes conversations from the Home screen but does not delete them: Google says archived conversations remain readable. Select the conversation and choose Unarchive to return it to the main list. See Google Messages’ archive and delete instructions.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Look in Trash if your app has it
Google’s support instructions say deleted conversations cannot be recovered, but reports in 2026 described a Trash feature rolling out in Google Messages. App behavior may therefore differ by version. Check your installed app for Trash and consult current Google Messages help before concluding a recently deleted conversation is unrecoverable. A universal recovery window is not established.
Check for a message limit on an older app or device
A historical Android 2.3 user guide documents a Delete old messages option that removes older SMS or MMS messages when a thread reaches its configured limit. That is evidence for older software, not proof that current Android phones have this control. If you use an older device or messaging app, inspect that app’s settings or help for a message limit and automatic deletion option.

What disappeared? Use this quick check
| What is missing | First check | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Verification or one-time codes | Google Messages > Message organization > Auto-delete OTPs after 24 hours | A reported Google Messages control documented on a Pixel 7a running Android 14; it may not appear on every device or version. |
| An entire conversation missing from the inbox | Archived, then Trash if available | Google documents archive and unarchive behavior. Its deletion instructions say recovery is not possible, though a Trash rollout has been reported for some versions. |
| Older messages within a thread on an older device or app | Message limit or “Delete old messages” setting | Documented in an Android 2.3 manual; current availability is not established. |
Back up messages you want to keep
Google says Android device backup includes SMS and MMS, and includes RCS messages when you use Google Messages. The documented manual route is Android Settings > Google > All services > Backup and restore > Back up now. Menu names can shift between Android versions. See Google’s Android backup guidance. A backup is a safeguard for messages you want to preserve; it does not turn off an automatic deletion setting.
