How-To Geek author Patrick Campanale says he lost his camera on a bus during a work trip years ago. To make a camera easier to locate if it went missing again, he printed a two-piece lens cap for a Sony A7III designed to hold an Apple AirTag. Campanale reported spending $0.51 on filament and printing the part in under an hour; that figure covers neither the AirTag nor the printer, and the mount is a locator aid—not a guarantee against theft or loss.
What the $0.51 camera mount is
Campanale’s design is a two-piece lens cap intended for the Sony A7III, with space inside for an AirTag. It puts the tracker in a camera accessory rather than attaching it directly to the camera body. The design file he used is not identified in the available account, so the exact model, its current availability and license, and its compatibility with other cameras cannot be confirmed.

The motivation was personal: Campanale says he left his camera on a bus during a work trip and never saw it again. The printed cap was his later attempt to make a camera easier to locate if it went missing. That is his account of the project, not evidence that the mount prevents theft or ensures recovery.

What the cost and print time include
Campanale calculated $0.51 in filament for his print using a filament price of $21.99 per kilogram. He reported that the print took under an hour. Both are figures from his specific project, not general estimates for printing this design.

Those details describe his setup only. Your material cost and print duration can differ with the printer, filament, settings, and model file.
How Campanale printed and assembled it
- Get a compatible model. The account describes the two-piece Sony A7III lens-cap design, but does not identify the exact file. Before printing another copy, verify that the file is available, that its license permits your intended use, and that it is designed for your camera and lens.
- Slice the model. Campanale used Bambu Studio with Bambu PLA Pure and the default filament profiles. The article says the profile included supports.
- Print and remove supports. The print took him under an hour, and he reported that the supports came off easily. This is his observation about his print, not a tested time or result for other printers.
- Fit the pieces and AirTag. Campanale found the initial screw-in somewhat difficult and the fit tight. His report does not establish how securely the cap stays attached during handling or use, so check the fit on your own equipment before relying on it.
How an AirTag can help locate a camera
An AirTag is not a continuous GPS tracker. Apple says it emits a secure Bluetooth signal that nearby devices in the Find My network can detect; those devices relay its location to iCloud, where the owner can view it in the Find My app. Whether a location can be reported depends on the tracker being detected by that network.

Apple also describes Lost Mode and temporary sharing of an item’s location. These features can help someone find a missing belonging, but they do not guarantee a camera will be found or returned. The mount should be treated as one possible aid for locating gear, not as a theft deterrent or recovery service. Apple’s AirTag overview explains the product and Find My features.
Concealment does not make an AirTag undetectable
A cap can make a tracker less obvious to a casual observer, but Apple’s unwanted-tracking protections still apply. Apple says people may receive alerts when a separated tracker is detected moving with them over time, and that AirTags can emit sounds in specified circumstances. Apple said in a February 10, 2022 newsroom statement: “AirTag was designed to help people locate their personal belongings, not to track people or another person’s property, and we condemn in the strongest possible terms any malicious use of our products.” Use an AirTag only with belongings that are yours or that you are authorized to track.

Campanale also mentions camera-specific battery-compartment mounts for a Nikon Z30 and a Sony a6700 cage, as well as a small box attached to a camera’s 1/4-20 screw. These are examples from his article, not verified current products or assurances of fit. The account says a design can be found online or created with CAD, but does not name the file used for the featured cap.

Before choosing or making a mount, check its fit for the exact camera and accessory, how securely it attaches, whether you can reach the AirTag for battery service, how it is made, the total project cost, and how noticeable it is. No comparative testing is reported, so there is no basis to claim that the lens-cap design is better than these alternatives.
