Repeated checking and difficulty switching off can be signs of digital stress, but they do not, on their own, mean you have a diagnosed condition.
Why being offline can feel unsettling
If you find yourself constantly refreshing apps or checking alerts, you are not alone in the behaviour. Guidance from the European Commission and Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recognizes that digital habits and interruptions can affect wellbeing. That does not establish a distinct disorder called anxiety about missing messages, and this experience alone cannot diagnose one.

Notifications can keep you feeling “on call.” The European Commission says, “Fewer interruptions can help you stay focused and reduce feelings of being constantly "on call".” Reducing interruptions may help, but a total digital detox is not guaranteed to feel good for everyone.

Make offline time predictable and reachable
Choose a manageable interval
Start with a short offline period that feels achievable—perhaps during a meal, a walk, or a work block—and decide when you will check messages afterward. A clear return time can make the boundary easier to keep than an open-ended promise to stop checking.

Silence routine alerts, not every route to help
Turn off non-essential notifications or use Do Not Disturb; if that feels like too much, silence notification sounds first. Device settings and labels vary, so use your phone’s notification or focus settings rather than relying on a universal menu path. The European Commission recommends disabling non-essential alerts, and Mind’s online and offline balance guidance suggests telling a family member or close friend when you are switching off if emergency contact is a concern.
For genuinely urgent needs, agree with a trusted person on a practical way to reach you, such as a call or another channel you keep available. No single setup can guarantee that every emergency will get through, so choose an arrangement that fits your circumstances and keep essential communication channels in mind.

Break the repeated-checking loop
When you notice the urge to refresh, pause long enough to name what prompted it: a notification, a quiet moment, or a thought that someone may need you. Then delay the next check until your planned time. The eSafety Commissioner suggests taking breaks or turning off notifications when you feel compelled to refresh apps or check alerts.

It may help to ask: “What am I predicting will happen if I reply later? What evidence do I have? What is a reasonable next check-in time?” NHS self-help guidance describes how thoughts, feelings, and actions can reinforce one another, and offers ways to reframe thoughts, manage worry, and gradually face feared situations. These questions adapt general self-help ideas; they are not a treatment protocol specifically tested for worry about missed messages.

Keep connection bigger than your inbox
Plan something to do during the offline interval—an activity, a conversation, or time with someone you trust—rather than making the interval only about resisting your phone. Mind recommends setting aside offline time and reaching out to people in your life. eSafety likewise encourages balancing screen time with other ways to connect and communicate. As the eSafety Commissioner puts it, “Make sure you’re thinking about why you’re online and how it’s making you feel.”

A 2024 review in Pediatrics describes mixed experiences of voluntary digital disconnection: some participants reported calmer feelings and better self-regulation, while others experienced loneliness, frustration, stress, or fear of missing out. In one 14-day intervention summarized by the review, 503 German adults took part; the review reports reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms. It also reports that reducing smartphone use alone, or alongside more physical activity, was more effective for positive mental health over follow-up than increasing physical activity alone. Those findings are about that intervention, not the prevalence of missed-message anxiety or a prediction of what will happen for any individual.

When to seek support
Consider talking with someone you trust or a health professional if the worry is persistent, hard to cope with, or interfering with sleep, relationships, mood, or everyday life. The European Commission advises seeking support when online experiences affect those areas. NHS guidance says to seek medical help if you are struggling to cope or self-help is not working. In the UK, adults may be able to self-refer to NHS talking therapies, depending on their age and area; see NHS guidance on getting help for mental health.
