If a fantasy starter is ruled out, replace them with an eligible player from your bench before that player’s lineup slot locks. First verify the inactive status, then check the player’s kickoff time and your league’s lock rules. On ESPN, slots lock individually at each NFL game’s kickoff; NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules also set the deadline by the individual player’s scheduled start. Your league settings may differ.
Make the change before the player’s slot locks
- Verify the status. Check the fantasy platform’s current designation and official inactive information. ESPN says it uses the NFL’s official injury and inactive list to update player status. A “questionable” report is not the same as an official inactive designation. ESPN’s player status definitions explain its labels.
- Check the player’s kickoff and your league’s lock setting. The relevant deadline may be that player’s game, not the start of the full Sunday slate. NFL Fantasy’s 2025 rules allow a manager to change a player’s active or reserve status before the player’s scheduled NFL start, as determined by NFL.com’s clock. ESPN says player slots lock individually as each NFL game kicks off. Check ESPN’s roster-lock guidance, and confirm the rule shown in your own league.
- Choose a replacement who fits the open slot. Check the replacement’s position and flex eligibility against your league’s roster settings. NFL Fantasy’s standard lineup includes one QB, two RBs, two WRs, one TE, one RB/WR flex, one team defense and one kicker; that setup is not universal. NFL Fantasy’s lineup guidance describes its standard slots.
- Make the swap and confirm it saved. Use your platform’s lineup screen, place the replacement in the active slot, then make sure the change appears before kickoff. The exact app steps depend on the service and league.
What happens if kickoff has already passed?
On ESPN, a player’s slot cannot be swapped by the manager after it locks; ESPN says only the League Manager can make a roster change on the manager’s behalf. If the slot is locked, contact the League Manager and follow the league’s agreed rules rather than assuming an exception is available. ESPN’s post-lock guidance covers that restriction.

If the ruled-out player is in an ESPN IR slot
ESPN says a player with an Out or Injured Reserve designation may qualify for an IR slot when the league has enabled that roster option. Eligibility depends on the displayed status and league settings; consult ESPN’s player status definitions. Also check how a status change affects roster validity and waiver claims: ESPN notes that a healthy player in an IR/IL slot can create roster-slot limits relevant to waiver moves.
