Set Windows active hours to cover the stream, use a short pause only when necessary, and install updates and restart during a planned maintenance window between broadcasts.
Set active hours to cover your stream
Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the PC, helping it avoid automatically restarting during that period. Set them to cover the full time your channel is scheduled to be live, including setup and recovery time.

- On the streaming PC, open Settings > Windows Update.
- Open the Active hours control. Depending on your Windows version and rollout, you may be able to set the hours manually or let Windows adjust them based on activity.
- If manual hours are available, set a start and end time that span the broadcast. Check the displayed hours against your local time and stream schedule.
- When Windows offers a restart for an installed update, use its restart scheduling controls to choose a time outside the broadcast.
Windows labels and available controls can vary by version, rollout, edition, or device-management policy. Check the controls shown on the streaming PC itself. Active hours reduce the chance of a restart during the selected period; they are not a permanent block. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ says updates eventually need to be installed.
Pause updates only as a temporary bridge
If an update is likely to disrupt a critical broadcast period and you cannot schedule its restart in time, pausing updates can defer the issue briefly. Microsoft’s current pause guidance allows an end date up to 35 days away. When the pause expires, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates; pausing does not permanently turn off automatic updates.

- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Open the pause control and select an end date that comes before your next planned maintenance window.
- Before that date, return to Windows Update, resume updates if necessary, install what is available, and schedule the restart between broadcasts.
Do not leave a pause in place as your long-term update policy. For the current Windows controls and limits, see Microsoft’s guidance on pausing updates.
Use a maintenance window for updates and restarts
The durable approach is to reserve a period when a stream can be offline. Update-related restarts are sometimes required, and keeping the PC patched and restart-ready is safer than trying to prevent them indefinitely.
- Choose a window between broadcasts that leaves enough time for installation, a restart, and a stream check.
- In Settings > Windows Update, resume updates if paused and install available updates.
- Restart the PC when prompted, then confirm Windows has returned to the desktop and the network connection is working.
- Start the encoder and verify that it connects to the intended YouTube stream.
- Preview the stream and check Live Control Room’s health status and messages before relying on the broadcast again.
This sequence is an operational precaution: Windows update controls determine restart timing, while YouTube’s tools help you check the broadcast after the PC is back. Neither YouTube stream-health monitoring nor encoder settings prevent Windows from restarting.

Account for Windows 11’s 2026 restart changes
Microsoft says a consolidated monthly restart approach is rolling out gradually for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. In its article published August 14, 2026, Microsoft describes the change for updates released on and after July 28, 2026: several restart-requiring categories are grouped with the monthly security update. It may not yet be available on every device, and Microsoft lists exceptions that can arrive sooner, including Defender security intelligence updates, AI component updates, critical or expedited driver updates, and emergency or out-of-band updates. A combined update will not be held indefinitely.
That change may make update timing more predictable on some eligible PCs, but it is not a guarantee that a 24/7 stream will never be interrupted. Keep active hours configured and retain a maintenance window. See Microsoft’s explanation of the Windows 11 rollout.
Check the YouTube stream separately
Windows Update and YouTube stream health are separate systems. Before a broadcast, YouTube recommends testing the encoder and network setup, choosing a quality suited to the available connection, and previewing the stream. During the event, monitor stream health and review messages. YouTube’s encoder documentation recommends RTMPS for encryption into Google’s servers.

- Check the encoder’s connection and the correct stream key before going live.
- Use YouTube Live Control Room to preview the incoming stream and inspect health messages.
- If you make a local recording, check it after recovery to help distinguish a PC or encoder interruption from a YouTube-side issue.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. If a dedicated streaming PC still runs Windows 10, account for that lifecycle in your security and reliability plans; pausing updates is not a substitute for supported software. Troubleshoot a restart or interrupted stream
Windows restarts while the stream is live
Check whether active hours cover the full broadcast and whether a restart had already been scheduled. After the PC returns, open Windows Update to see whether an update completed or another restart is pending. Set a maintenance window before resuming the long broadcast schedule.

The PC is back, but YouTube is not receiving video
Confirm the encoder is running, network access is restored, and it is using the intended stream key. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview, health status, and messages. If needed, reconnect the encoder and verify the incoming feed before treating the channel as live.
The expected pause or restart control is missing
Windows controls can differ by build, edition, staged rollout, or management policy. Review the available options under Settings > Windows Update; on a managed PC, an administrator’s policy may affect what you can change.
A pause expired and updates resumed
That is expected: pause is temporary. Install updates and restart during your next maintenance window rather than extending the deferral indefinitely.
