To show YouTube chat inside your livestream video, create a chat overlay with a widget service, then add its URL to OBS as a Browser Source. OBS does not include a built-in on-stream chat overlay; its official guidance recommends embedding a third-party overlay. This is different from opening chat beside your preview or embedding chat on a website.
What you need for an on-stream chat box
- OBS Studio or compatible broadcast software.
- A chat overlay provider, such as Streamlabs. OBS also names StreamElements as an overlay option, though its cited tutorial does not give a full setup sequence.
- The widget or overlay URL from that provider, which you will add as a Browser Source.
OBS’s FAQ says, “OBS Studio does not directly provide the facilities to show the stream chat in your chat.” It explains that third-party chat overlays can be displayed by embedding them with a Browser Source. Read the OBS FAQ.

Configure the widget
Open your Streamlabs dashboard and find the Chat Box widget. Set its display behavior to suit your scene; Streamlabs documents settings such as message fade timing and chat delay. Copy the widget URL
Use Streamlabs’ widget URL instructions to locate and copy the Chat Box URL. Treat this URL as a widget configuration link: if you reset or change the widget, check whether the URL or its settings need updating. See How to Locate and Use Streamlabs Widget URLs.

Add it to the scene as a Browser Source
In OBS, select the scene where chat should appear. In the Sources panel, choose the add-source control, select Browser, create or select a source, and paste the copied widget URL into its URL field. Set the source width and height to fit your intended video layout. Streamlabs’ URL guidance also describes adjusting the Browser Source’s FPS when needed.

Place and check the overlay
Move and resize the Browser Source in the OBS scene preview. Check it at the final output size: chat should be readable, not cover important content, and remain within the video frame. Preview the scene before going live so you can spot overlap or text that is too small.

Choose the right chat display method

YouTube’s official iframe instructions are for embedding live chat on a creator’s website, not for placing chat into the livestream scene. See YouTube’s live chat guidance. OBS’s Stream Layout Tutorial 2: Alerts & Chat Box names Streamlabs and StreamElements among overlay/widget approaches. Streamlabs also describes its Chat Box and supported setup routes at the Chat Box product page.

Common problems and fixes
- The chat appears in OBS but not in the live video: confirm the Browser Source is in the scene being broadcast, is not hidden, and is inside the output frame.
- The overlay is blank: verify that you copied the current widget URL and pasted it into the Browser Source URL field. Revisit the provider’s dashboard if you changed or reset the widget.
- Messages are difficult to read: enlarge the source or adjust the widget’s display settings, then inspect the scene at the final video size.
- Chat is visible to you but not viewers: a dock or pop-out window is only a production aid. Add an overlay Browser Source to put chat into the encoded scene.
- You expected YouTube’s iframe to appear in OBS: the iframe method is for a website embed. Use a provider widget URL as a Browser Source for an on-stream overlay.
