How to stop Windows from syncing your settings and activity across devices

Windows has separate switches for preference backup, local Activity history, Edge browsing history and OneDrive. Use this guide to stop the exact data you want without deleting cloud files.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows does not have one universal “stop syncing” switch. Windows preferences, local Activity history, Microsoft Edge browsing history, and OneDrive files use separate controls. To stop the right data from roaming, identify which of these you are seeing and change its setting.

On Windows 11, preference roaming is controlled at Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > Remember my preferences. Activity history is under Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history; Edge history is under Settings > Profiles > Sync; and files appearing on other PCs are controlled in OneDrive.

These settings have different scopes. Some affect one Windows installation, some affect one Edge profile, and others determine what a Microsoft account can carry to another installation. Decide whether you want to stop future syncing, prevent new local collection, clear an existing record, pause transfers temporarily, or disconnect a computer entirely.

Identify what is actually syncing

The word “sync” describes several unrelated features. Use the symptom in this table to choose the correct control before changing anything:

What you notice Data involved Where to change it What the change affects
Wallpaper, accessibility choices, Wi-Fi details, language or other Windows options follow you to another PC Windows preferences backed up to your Microsoft account Windows Settings > Accounts > Windows backup Future roaming of selected Windows preference categories
Apps or websites appear in Windows’ activity list Activity history stored on the device Windows Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history Local activity recording and deletion of the history already stored there
Web pages visited on one PC appear in another Edge installation Microsoft Edge browsing history Edge Settings > Profiles > Sync Edge’s History synchronization
Documents, Desktop files or pictures are present on multiple computers OneDrive cloud files and folder synchronization OneDrive settings Which folders are downloaded, temporary pausing, or the PC’s connection to OneDrive

Turning off one row does not turn off the others. For example, disabling Windows Backup preferences does not disable Edge history or OneDrive.

A quick decision path

  1. If a Windows option such as personalization, language, accessibility or saved Wi-Fi information follows your account, start with Remember my preferences.
  2. If you want Windows to stop retaining a list of apps, documents or sites on this particular PC, use Activity history. Clear the existing record separately if needed.
  3. If only visited pages are appearing in another browser, open the affected Edge profile and switch off History under Sync.
  4. If actual files or folders are present, open OneDrive. Choose folders for a selective local change, pause for a short interruption, or unlink the PC when it should no longer connect to that account.

Use the narrowest control that matches the data. A broad change can create an unwanted side effect: unlinking OneDrive is more disruptive than excluding one folder, and clearing Activity history is different from merely stopping new entries.

Stop Windows 11 from roaming your preferences

Windows 11 puts the main preference control in Windows Backup. Microsoft’s account privacy guidance and the Windows Backup Settings Catalog describe the categories, although the exact list can vary with the Windows build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Open Windows backup.
  4. Find Remember my preferences.
  5. Turn the master switch off to stop preference roaming entirely, or expand it and turn off only the categories you do not want to share between Windows installations.

Microsoft lists these preference groups:

  • Accessibility
  • Accounts, Wi-Fi networks and passwords
  • Personalization
  • Language preferences and dictionary
  • Other Windows settings

Use the category switches when you want useful continuity without sending everything. For example, you can leave personalization enabled while disabling saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, or turn off accessibility settings if multiple people use the same Microsoft account on different PCs.

Turning the setting off controls future preference roaming; it is not a command to erase every preference that may already have been applied on another installation. Review each device locally if you need different settings there. Likewise, the master switch is broader than a single category, so inspect the expanded list before changing it when you want a selective result.

This feature concerns Windows settings, not your cloud files. Microsoft explicitly treats Windows preferences separately from OneDrive files and photos. If the items moving between PCs are documents or pictures, use the OneDrive instructions below instead of changing Remember my preferences.

Check the optional Microsoft account privacy control

Some personal-account experiences also show a separate privacy-dashboard switch named Sync your Microsoft account with Windows. It is a conditional control: Microsoft offers it only in some countries or regions and account experiences, so its absence does not mean that Windows Backup is malfunctioning.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the switch is available, open Microsoft’s Your Microsoft account, your data, your choices page, sign in, and look for that exact label. The page’s guidance does not apply to work or school accounts. Organizations may manage synchronization through their own account policies, so a personal-account privacy switch should not be expected in that scenario.

Do not substitute this optional dashboard control for the Windows Backup setting. Check both places only when they are relevant to your account type, region and Windows experience.

Stop local Activity history and clear what is already stored

Activity history is a separate privacy feature from Windows preference backup. It concerns activity recorded on the device, such as apps, documents and websites that Windows may show in activity-related experiences.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Privacy & security.
  3. Select Activity history.
  4. Turn off Store my activity history on this device.
  5. If you want to remove the existing record, select Clear activity history and follow the confirmation prompt.

Clearing the history and preventing new local storage are different actions. Use both if you want the old entries removed and do not want new entries recorded. The setting is a local Windows control, so repeat the check on each installation where you want the same privacy result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why an older “send activity history” option may still appear

Microsoft deprecated the option to send activity history to Microsoft from Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 in the January 23, 2024 update, KB5034204. A fully updated installation may no longer display that control. If an older installation still shows it, install current Windows updates; until then, turn the option off as well as disabling local storage.

What happened to Timeline and cross-device activity syncing?

Do not treat modern Windows 11 as if it still provides the old cross-device Timeline service. Microsoft says Microsoft Entra activity-history synchronization stopped beginning in January 2024, following the earlier change for Microsoft accounts in 2021. The Timeline experience was retired in Windows 11, while local activity history and the Timeline experience remain on Windows 10 devices.

Microsoft’s support page states: “The timeline user experience was retired in Windows 11, although it remains in Windows 10.” Read the current status in Get Help With Timeline. If you are using Windows 11, the Activity history switch is the relevant local privacy control; it is not a way to restore or manage a current Windows 11 cross-device Timeline.

Stop OneDrive files and folders from appearing on other PCs

If files are the problem, change OneDrive rather than Windows Backup. OneDrive has separate controls for selecting folders, pausing transfers, quitting the client, unlinking a PC, and removing the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop selected folders from syncing to one computer

This is the least disruptive option when you still want OneDrive connected but do not want every folder stored locally.

  1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows notification area.
  2. Open OneDrive Settings.
  3. Go to the Account tab.
  4. Select Choose folders.
  5. Clear the folders you do not want downloaded to that computer and confirm.

The folder choice is local to that computer and account. The unchecked folders remain available in OneDrive online and in the OneDrive mobile app; they are simply not kept in that PC’s synchronized folder set. Microsoft documents this behavior in Choose which OneDrive folders you want to sync on Windows or macOS.

Choosing folders is therefore a storage and visibility decision for one client, not a deletion from the account. It does not remove the folder from OneDrive.com or from another computer that has chosen to sync it.

Pause OneDrive temporarily

Use pausing when you need a short break—for example, on a metered connection or while troubleshooting. From the OneDrive cloud icon, open the client menu and choose Pause syncing, then select 2 hours, 8 hours or 24 hours. Pausing is temporary; synchronization resumes after the selected period unless you change another setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quit, unlink or uninstall OneDrive

These actions have progressively broader effects:

  • Quit OneDrive: closes the client until you start it again. It is a session-level stop, not a permanent account change.
  • Unlink this PC: disconnects that Windows installation from the OneDrive account. Choose this when the computer should no longer participate in that account’s synchronization.
  • Uninstall OneDrive: removes the client from the computer. Microsoft says files and data stored online are not lost; you can still access them by signing in at OneDrive.com.

Microsoft’s full procedure for pausing, quitting, unlinking and uninstalling is in How to cancel or stop sync in OneDrive.

These choices are not interchangeable. Pause is time-limited, quit lasts only until the client is reopened, unlinking changes the computer’s account connection, and uninstalling removes the local application. Pick the least extensive action that meets your goal.

Do not delete files to stop synchronization

A local OneDrive folder and the cloud copy are related but distinct locations. Deleting a synchronized file can delete it from OneDrive and other connected devices, depending on the client state and recycle-bin recovery. Use Choose folders, pause, unlinking or uninstalling for the intended result; do not use deletion as a synchronization switch.

Turn off Microsoft Edge browsing-history sync

Edge history has its own switch, independent of Windows Backup and Activity history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Select Settings and more (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Open Profiles.
  4. Select Sync.
  5. Turn off History.

This stops Edge from synchronizing browsing history through that profile. It does not erase history already stored in each browser profile; clear local browsing data separately if removal is your goal. Microsoft’s account guidance for the relevant control is Browsing history on the privacy dashboard.

Because the switch belongs to an Edge profile, verify that you changed the profile that is actually signed in and being used. Turning off Windows preference backup will not change it, and turning off Edge History will not affect OneDrive files or Windows Activity history.

Microsoft also notes that legacy Edge history collection and display could depend on account and diagnostic-data settings. That older behavior does not change the current Edge path: check the History switch under the profile’s Sync page.

Choose the narrowest control that matches your goal

Goal Use this control Scope Result
Keep Windows settings from following a Microsoft account Remember my preferences All preference categories or selected categories Stops future preference roaming; categories can be managed individually
Prevent new local activity records Store my activity history on this device One Windows installation Stops local storage of new activity
Remove activity already recorded Clear activity history History stored on that Windows installation Deletes the existing local activity record
Keep certain OneDrive folders out of one PC Account > Choose folders One computer/account combination Leaves folders online while excluding them from that PC’s local sync set
Stop OneDrive only for a short period Pause syncing One OneDrive client Pauses for 2, 8 or 24 hours
Disconnect a computer from OneDrive Unlink this PC That computer’s OneDrive connection Stops the client from remaining connected to the account
Stop Edge from sharing visited pages Edge Profiles > Sync > History That Edge profile Stops future history synchronization

The table also explains why a single “privacy off” action is not available. Data type, control location, scope and effect all differ. For example, clearing Activity history removes an existing local record, whereas turning off Remember my preferences changes future Windows preference roaming. Likewise, excluding a OneDrive folder from one PC leaves the online copy available.

Troubleshoot settings that do not match these instructions

“Windows backup” or a category is missing

Microsoft changes labels and the available category list between Windows builds. Install pending Windows updates, restart Settings, and search Settings for Windows backup or Remember my preferences. The catalog at Windows Backup Settings Catalog lists the current documented categories; it does not guarantee that every build exposes every switch.

The account privacy-dashboard switch is not present

That separate “Sync your Microsoft account with Windows” control is conditional on region and account experience. It is not documented as a universal replacement for Remember my preferences, and Microsoft’s personal-account page does not apply to work or school accounts. Use the Windows Backup setting for the controls available on the PC.

The activity-history sending option is still visible

That usually indicates an older Windows 11 installation or an installation that has not received the January 23, 2024 change. Update Windows. If the option remains, disable it, and also turn off Store my activity history on this device if you do not want local records.

Files keep appearing after Windows preference sync is disabled

Those files are being handled by OneDrive. Open OneDrive’s Account settings and use Choose folders, or use pause, unlinking or uninstalling according to whether the stop should be selective, temporary or permanent for that PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visited pages still appear in another browser

Reopen Edge’s profile-specific Sync page and verify that History is off. Windows Backup does not control that switch. If the concern is old entries rather than future synchronization, clear browsing data in Edge separately.

You want to stop every category on one computer

There is no single universal switch. Review Remember my preferences, Activity history, Edge History sync and OneDrive independently. Apply only the changes that match the data you want to keep local, then sign out or restart the relevant app if its status does not update immediately.

You are using a work or school account

The optional personal-account privacy-dashboard page is not the applicable control for work or school accounts. An organization may manage synchronization through account policies. On the PC, still check the Windows Backup, Activity history, Edge and OneDrive controls that are available, but do not expect the personal-account dashboard switch to appear.

You are unsure whether a folder was removed or merely excluded

After using OneDrive’s Choose folders command, check OneDrive.com or the mobile app. Microsoft says unchecked folders remain online; they are simply not part of that computer’s local synchronized folder set. Do not delete a folder just because it no longer appears locally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the result without deleting anything

  1. In Windows Backup, confirm the master or selected Remember my preferences switches show the state you intended.
  2. In Activity history, confirm local storage is off and use Clear activity history if removal was part of the goal.
  3. In Edge, return to Profiles > Sync and confirm History is off for the profile in question.
  4. In OneDrive, check the cloud icon status and review Account > Choose folders; do not infer that a missing local folder was deleted from the cloud.
  5. On another device, allow time for the relevant client to apply its configuration, then check only the data type covered by that control.

Testing one data type at a time makes the result easier to interpret. A missing file is an OneDrive question, a visited page is an Edge question, and a changed Windows option is a Windows Backup question. If the setting still appears to roam, return to the matching control rather than disabling unrelated services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stop all Windows syncing with one switch?

No. Windows preferences, local Activity history, Edge browsing history and OneDrive files use separate controls. Review each service and change only the one that handles the data you want to keep local.

Will turning off Remember my preferences delete files from OneDrive?

No. Windows preference backup is separate from OneDrive files and photos. Use OneDrive’s Choose folders, pause, unlink or uninstall options for file synchronization.

Does turning off Activity history remove old entries?

No. Turn off Store my activity history on this device to prevent new local storage, then select Clear activity history to remove the record already stored on that installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I not see the “Sync your Microsoft account with Windows” option?

Microsoft offers that account privacy-dashboard switch only in some regions and account experiences. It also does not apply to work or school accounts. Use Windows Backup’s Remember my preferences controls instead.

Is Windows 11 still syncing Timeline between PCs?

Microsoft says the Timeline experience was retired in Windows 11. Microsoft Entra activity-history synchronization stopped in January 2024, and the earlier Microsoft-account change occurred in 2021. Activity history remains a local privacy control.

What is the safest way to stop one OneDrive folder on one PC?

Open the OneDrive cloud menu, go to Settings > Account > Choose folders, clear the folder and confirm. The folder remains available online and in the mobile app.

What is the difference between pausing and unlinking OneDrive?

Pause stops transfers for 2, 8 or 24 hours. Unlink this PC disconnects that Windows installation from the OneDrive account. Quit is only a session-level stop, while uninstalling removes the client but does not delete online files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Edge History sync erase browsing history?

No. It stops future synchronization for that Edge profile. Clear browsing data separately if you also want to remove history already stored in the browser.

The Bottom Line

Match the control to the data: Windows Backup > Remember my preferences for Windows settings, Privacy & security > Activity history for local records, Edge Profiles > Sync > History for browsing history, and OneDrive settings for files. Use category selection or Choose folders for a narrow change, pause only when the interruption is temporary, and never delete cloud files as a way to stop synchronization.
