How to Sell Gold Jewelry or Coins and Get a Fair Price

To get a fair price for gold jewelry or coins, identify what you have, estimate its gold content, and compare written offers from at least two buyers on the same terms. A bullion coin is usually priced against its actual gold weight and a dealer’s buy-back spread. Jewelry may be worth more as a wearable, secondhand, or collectible piece than as scrap, so compare that possibility before accepting a metal-only offer. No buyer type is guaranteed to pay the most: compare the net amount you would receive for your specific item.

What a fair gold offer is—and is not

A gold buyer’s offer is not the same as the spot price. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) defines spot as the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It is a reference for metal value, not a promise that a seller will receive that amount.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

As the CFTC puts it: “A dealer will always sell metal above the spot price and buy it back below the spot price.” The gap between the reference price and the dealer’s buy-back price is part of the spread. Buyers may also account for testing, refining, handling, and other costs. The spread varies by dealer and transaction; there is no established market-wide typical payout percentage to rely on.

For a coin, compare offers with the coin’s actual gold weight—not its face value or its total physical weight. For jewelry, both fineness and the weight of the gold matter. A necklace’s gross weight may include a stone, a clasp, solder, or other material that is not gold. Any home estimate is only a comparison aid: it is not a purity test, appraisal, or prediction of the buyer’s final offer.

One useful question is: “How much would I receive if I had to sell the metal tomorrow?” To answer it, start with a current reference price and the gold content you can reasonably establish, then compare that metal-value estimate with the written amount each buyer would actually pay. The difference is not automatically an unfair charge: buyers set their own buy-back prices and may face costs. But understanding the gap lets you ask what explains it and compare offers fairly.

For a simple comparison, subtract the offer from your estimated metal reference value. That dollar difference shows how far the offer is below the reference; dividing the difference by the reference gives the percentage gap. This is a way to compare quotes, not a market-standard fee or proof that one offer is fair. Check whether the buyer has listed separate charges, because an advertised price and the final amount after deductions may not be equivalent.

Step 1: Separate, photograph, and record each item

Keep coins apart from jewelry, and record each piece separately rather than weighing a mixed lot. Note visible marks, the item’s condition, and any known purchase or provenance information. Photographs can document what you are offering, especially if the transaction involves sending items by post. Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards recommends weighing and photographing jewelry before attempting to sell it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A small digital pocket scale can help record jewelry weight, but it cannot determine purity, identify a coin’s collector value, or establish a fair price. Treat its reading as a preliminary record only. Stones, non-gold components, and the buyer’s own testing and weighing method can all affect the amount of gold the buyer recognizes.

  • Group coins and jewelry separately.
  • Photograph both sides of coins and the visible marks and condition of jewelry.
  • Record an individual weight for each jewelry item, plus the scale’s unit of measure.
  • Make a note of stones, unusual clasps, damage, matching sets, or other features that could matter to a secondhand or collector buyer.

Keep the notes and photographs until the sale is complete. If a buyer’s result differs from your preliminary record, you can ask which item, weight, or purity finding accounts for the difference. For mailed items, an accurate description and photographs also help you keep track of what you sent; they do not replace the buyer’s testing or the carrier’s insurance conditions.

Step 2: Identify purity, coin type, and possible value beyond the metal

Read jewelry marks cautiously

Look for a karat or fineness mark and, where applicable, a hallmark. Fineness describes the proportion of precious metal in parts per thousand: for example, the UK’s 9-carat gold fineness mark is 375, meaning 375 parts gold per 1,000. UK guidance also says gold articles below 1 gram are exempt from the UK hallmarking requirement. These are UK-specific rules, not universal standards.

In the UK, a legally recognized hallmark on a qualifying article includes a sponsor’s mark, a fineness mark, and an assay office mark. Hallmark systems and legal requirements vary internationally, however, and a stamp should not be treated as a guarantee that carries identical legal force everywhere. The World Gold Council notes that US marking practice differs and that countries set their own requirements. If a mark is unfamiliar, check it against local guidance and ask the buyer how purity will be tested.

India has a separate system. The Bureau of Indian Standards says consumers may sell old hallmarked or unhallmarked jewelry to jewelers and describes a purity complaint route and HUID verification. Do not apply UK or Indian hallmark rules to a transaction in another country.

A mark is a clue to discuss with a buyer, not a substitute for understanding the buyer’s method. Ask whether the offer assumes the marked fineness or is based on a test, and whether the buyer will explain the result. If the stamp is worn, missing, or unfamiliar, do not guess at purity from appearance alone; have the buyer state the tested purity and how it affects the amount offered.

Identify the exact coin before accepting a bullion-only offer

Record a coin’s exact type, denomination, mint, year, and condition. Bullion coins are generally valued by their investment-grade gold content and the buyer’s offer relative to the live reference price. A numismatic coin may have collector value in addition to its metal value, depending on the particular coin and its condition. If yours may be collectible, get an informed specialist assessment before selling it solely for its gold content.

Be cautious about a buyer’s unsupported claim that a coin is “semi-numismatic.” The CFTC warns that the term has no special meaning. Ask what specific, verifiable features justify a proposed premium, and compare the answer with an independent assessment rather than relying on a label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that an old-looking coin is automatically rare or that a coin described as bullion has no collector interest. The practical point is to identify the specific coin before accepting a metal-only quote. If the buyer is offering only for gold content, ask them to say so clearly; if another buyer proposes a collector premium, ask for the basis and compare the net offer rather than treating the word “premium” as evidence by itself.

Step 3: Estimate a metal-value reference

Use a current spot quote in the currency and unit relevant to your sale, then estimate the amount of gold in the item. Gold prices move, so a quote or calculation is time-sensitive; do not use an old price as though it were current. The estimate gives you a common reference for comparing offers, not a guaranteed sale price.

A basic estimate starts with the item’s gold weight, expressed in a unit compatible with the live quote, and multiplies it by the current price for that amount of gold. If a jewelry item has a stated fineness, its gold proportion is one part of the estimate: for example, a UK 375 mark represents 375 parts gold per 1,000. But first account for non-gold parts, and remember that a hallmark or mark may not establish the buyer’s final tested weight or purity.

For a coin with a stated gold weight

Use the coin’s stated gold weight rather than its face value or gross weight. If a live quote is stated per troy ounce, make sure the coin weight and quote use compatible units before calculating. Compare the buyer’s written offer with that metal-value reference and ask the buyer to explain the difference.

Read the coin’s description carefully: the gold weight is not necessarily the coin’s total physical weight. If you are unsure which figure applies, ask a reputable coin shop or bullion dealer to identify the coin and specify the weight they used. Keep that same weight basis when comparing offers so that a quote based on gold content is not confused with one based on total coin weight.

For jewelry

Use the jewelry’s fineness and the weight of its gold, not simply the gross weight of the entire item. A fineness mark is expressed as parts per thousand; it indicates the stated gold proportion, but it does not remove the need to account for stones or other non-gold parts. A buyer may need to test the item and determine its payable gold weight, so your estimate may differ from the buyer’s result.

Ask whether a buyer weighs an item before or after removing stones or other components, and whether any non-gold parts are included in the quoted weight. These details matter because two buyers can start from different recognized weights even when they see the same jewelry. The important comparison is the final net offer for the same item, together with a clear explanation of any different test or deduction.

For either kind of item, ask what live reference price and weighing or testing result the buyer used. If the buyer will not explain the calculation, you cannot make a reliable like-for-like comparison. There is no fixed current gold price or universal buyer discount that can be applied in advance to every transaction.

Step 4: Get competing offers and compare the net amount

When practical, seek offers from at least two buyers. The CFTC recommends shopping around because dealers set their own spreads; Nottinghamshire Trading Standards likewise advises taking items to multiple buyers and checking costs. Ask each buyer the same questions and provide the same information, so differences in offers are easier to understand.

  1. Ask what is being valued. What weight and purity will the buyer use? For a coin, is the quote for bullion value, collector value, or both?
  2. Ask for the calculation. Which current reference price is being used, and how does the offer relate to it? Ask for the calculation and any deductions in writing.
  3. List every cost. Ask about assay or testing charges, handling or refining deductions, postage, insurance, return costs, and any other fee that could reduce your proceeds.
  4. Confirm payment terms. Ask when you will be paid and how payment will be made. Check whether the offer is conditional on testing or inspection after you hand over or send the item.
  5. Get the terms before committing. Request the offer, any conditions, and the fee schedule in writing. Compare the amount you will actually receive, not an advertised “up to” figure.

Make a short comparison table for yourself with the buyer’s name, stated weight and purity, reference price or method, deductions, payment timing, and net amount. This prevents a high headline quote from looking better than a lower quote that has fewer fees. If a buyer will not give a firm offer until testing, ask what happens if you decline after testing and whether any charge applies.

For a mail-in offer, also ask how the package is tracked and insured, what declared value the cover applies to, how the items are valued when received, and how they will be returned if you decline the offer. Do not assume that postage or insurance is included, or that an online buyer’s process protects you on the same terms as an in-person transaction. Check the buyer’s reputation and the rules that apply where you live; legal rights can be harder to enforce against an online trader based outside your country.

For a UK sale, GOV.UK consumer guidance suggests checking a seller’s reputation or trade-body membership. Hallmarking rules, consumer protections, buyer licensing, tax treatment, and mail-in arrangements are location-dependent; check the relevant local authority or a qualified adviser if any of them affect your transaction.

Step 5: Choose a selling route that fits the item

Item or situation Route to compare What to weigh
Bullion coin Compare offers from reputable coin shops or bullion dealers. Actual gold weight, current reference price, buy-back spread, and any fees.
Ordinary or damaged jewelry Compare scrap or refining offers from multiple buyers. Purity, recognized gold weight, testing method, deductions, and net payment.
Desirable jewelry with possible secondhand value Compare a secondhand sale or auction with a scrap offer. Expected net proceeds, selling costs, time, and uncertainty; a higher result is possible, not guaranteed.
Coin that may be collectible Seek an informed coin specialist’s assessment before a metal-only sale. Whether collector value is supported by the specific coin and its condition.

A scrap quote is a useful comparator, not an automatic answer for every piece. Nottinghamshire Trading Standards notes that jewelry valuable or desirable as a piece may attract more through secondhand sale or auction than a scrap-gold offer. That possibility does not guarantee a better result: compare actual net offers and account for fees, time, and the uncertainty of finding a buyer.

Likewise, no single buyer category can be identified as consistently highest-paying for every item or location. A coin shop, bullion dealer, jeweler, secondhand buyer, or auction route should be judged by its written terms for the specific item—not by a general promise that one type of buyer always pays best.

A secondhand or auction route can take more effort than a direct metal sale. Consider what you would receive after any selling costs and how long you are willing to wait, not just a hoped-for asking price. Compare a definite scrap or dealer offer with realistic net expectations from the alternative. If those expectations are unclear, treat the possible extra value as uncertain rather than assuming it will materialize.

Common mistakes that can reduce what you receive

  • Confusing spot with your payout: Spot is a reference for immediate-delivery metal, while a buyer’s offer can be lower because of the spread and transaction costs.
  • Using the wrong weight: A coin’s face value and gross weight are not its gold content. For jewelry, stones and other non-gold parts can inflate gross weight.
  • Treating a scale or stamp as proof: A pocket scale records weight but cannot test purity. Marks are useful clues, but rules and recognition differ by location; ask how the buyer will test the item.
  • Accepting the first offer without a comparison: Buyers set their own spreads and may apply different fees. Compare the net proceeds using the same item details and written terms.
  • Letting a “premium” label substitute for evidence: For potentially collectible coins, ask for a specialist’s basis for any premium rather than relying on the phrase “semi-numismatic.”
  • Sending an item before understanding the return process: Establish tracking, insurance, valuation, payment, and return terms before mailing it.
  • Assuming scrap is the only route for jewelry: If a piece has wearable or collectible appeal, compare a secondhand or auction route before accepting a scrap-only valuation.
  • Comparing unlike quotes: A price based on a different reference, gold weight, or testing assumption is not directly comparable. Ask each buyer to explain the basis before choosing.
  • Ignoring the final amount: Fees and deductions can change the amount you receive. Compare net proceeds and written conditions, not just an advertised rate.

Sources and jurisdiction

The guidance on spot prices, spreads, bullion and numismatic coins comes from the CFTC’s Customer Advisory: 10 Things to Ask Before Buying Physical Gold, Silver, or Other Metals. UK hallmarking information and the 375 fineness and below-1-gram examples come from GOV.UK and the British Hallmarking Council’s Hallmarking: practical guidance – summary (2022); UK consumer-protection guidance is in Hallmarking in the UK: consumer protection. Advice on weighing, photographing, comparing buyers, and considering secondhand sale or auction comes from Nottinghamshire County Council Trading Standards’ Golden rules when selling your gold jewellery. India-specific guidance is from the Bureau of Indian Standards’ Consumers – Hallmarking FAQs. International differences in hallmarking are noted by the World Gold Council in Gold Jewellery Hallmarks & Makers Marks. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the spot price of gold?

The CFTC defines spot as the cash price for immediate delivery, quoted in dollars per troy ounce. It is a reference for metal value, not the amount a seller is guaranteed to receive.

What is the spread when selling gold?

The spread is the gap between a dealer’s reference price and its buy-back price. A dealer’s offer may also reflect testing, refining, handling, and other costs. Spreads vary, so compare written offers rather than relying on a supposed typical payout.

How can I estimate what a gold coin is worth before selling?

Use a current price quote and the coin’s actual gold weight, making sure the units match. That gives a rough metal-value reference, not a guaranteed sale price. Identify the exact coin first, since a genuinely collectible coin may have value beyond its gold content.

Should I sell gold jewelry for scrap?

Not automatically. Compare scrap or refining offers with a secondhand or auction route if the piece is wearable, desirable, or potentially collectible. Account for fees, time, and uncertainty; a higher result is possible but not guaranteed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a hallmark prove the purity of my jewelry everywhere?

Hallmark rules differ by country, and marks do not have identical legal force worldwide. Check unfamiliar marks against local guidance and ask the buyer how they will test purity. UK and India have distinct rules and systems.

Is a pocket scale enough to tell me what my jewelry is worth?

No. It can help you record an item’s weight, but it cannot test purity or establish a fair price. Stones and other non-gold parts can also affect the payable gold weight.

The Bottom Line

Before you sell, identify each item, record its weight and visible marks, and check for possible collector or secondhand value. Use a current metal-value reference as a comparison point, then ask at least two buyers for written offers that explain their weight, purity, fees, and payment terms. Choose based on the net amount and conditions—not an advertised rate, a premium label, or the assumption that one kind of buyer always pays best.
