How to Stop Windows DPI Scaling from Resetting After a Restart

Windows desktop scaling and per-app High DPI overrides are different settings. Learn how to identify which one resets and assess registry and community workarounds carefully.

If custom DPI scaling disappears after a reboot, first identify which setting is changing: Windows display scaling applies to the desktop and displays, while the High DPI compatibility override applies to one app. They are separate settings, so a registry edit aimed at one is not a universal fix for the other. Start with the checks below; the available evidence does not establish a broadly reliable fix for current Windows 10 or Windows 11 builds.

Identify which DPI setting is reverting

Check whether the change affects the whole desktop or just one application. Windows display scaling changes the size of desktop content and may differ by display. A High DPI compatibility override changes how Windows handles a particular program.

  • Desktop or multiple displays: The setting to investigate is Windows display scaling.
  • One application: Check that application’s compatibility settings and DPI behavior instead of changing a system-wide scale value.

Microsoft’s explanation of DPI scaling describes Windows instructing applications and the desktop shell to resize content for a usable, consistent size. The details on that page focus on Windows 8.1, so they provide background rather than current-build repair instructions: High DPI and Windows 8.1.

Check the setting after the restart

  1. For desktop scaling, open Settings > System > Display. Select the affected display if more than one is shown, then check the Scale value. Note the value before changing it and whether other displays behave differently.
  2. For an application override, open the program’s properties. Right-click the app or its shortcut, choose Properties, open Compatibility, and select Change high DPI settings. Check whether the override is enabled and which scaling behavior is selected. Windows labels can vary by version and application.
  3. Set the intended option through its own settings page. Apply the change, restart Windows, and check the same display or app setting again. This confirms what is actually resetting; it does not by itself identify the cause.
  4. Record the diagnostic details if it still reverts. Note your Windows version and build, the affected display, the setting path, the chosen value, and whether the issue concerns the entire desktop or one app. These details are needed to distinguish cases; the cited reports do not establish a cause for an individual PC.

Why a LogPixels registry edit is not a general fix

Microsoft’s registry documentation describes LogPixels as a system-wide scale factor for Windows 8 scaling mode, and documents Win8DpiScaling and DesktopDPIOverride in connection with Windows 8.1 scaling modes. It lists historical examples such as 96 for 100%, 120 for 125%, 144 for 150%, and 192 for 200%; those figures are documented values for the specified legacy modes, not recommended edits for every current Windows installation.

The same article describes custom scaling from 100% to 500% in Windows 8 mode. Its scope matters: the documentation does not show that setting LogPixels manually fixes a display-scaling reset on all Windows 10 or Windows 11 builds. See Microsoft’s DPI-related APIs and registry settings for the version-specific details.

Because the documented values and modes are version-specific, do not treat an online registry recipe as a safe substitute for diagnosing which setting is reverting. The available documentation does not provide a universal registry procedure for this problem.

If only one application looks wrong

A program can be blurry even when desktop scaling is behaving as expected. Microsoft explains that a DPI-unaware program may render at a fixed 96 DPI and then be stretched by Windows at higher display scaling, which can blur its interface. That points toward the application’s DPI awareness or compatibility behavior, not necessarily a desktop scale value. Microsoft’s DPI and device-independent pixels documentation explains the distinction.

Look at the app’s High DPI compatibility options only when the problem is limited to that program. A setting that changes how one executable is rendered cannot be assumed to make Windows desktop scaling persist across reboots.

How much confidence to place in community workarounds

A Microsoft Q&A post dated March 11, 2025 describes a Windows 11 user’s display scaling returning to its original value after restart. Community replies suggest editing HKCUControl PanelDesktopLogPixels, creating a logon task that runs DisplaySwitch.exe /internal, or changing the resolution and then reverting it. These are anecdotal suggestions, not Microsoft-validated general fixes; the thread also includes a report that changing LogPixels did not solve the issue. Read the Windows 11 scaling-reset discussion with those limitations in mind.

Separate Microsoft Q&A reports describe a per-app override that does not save after reboot and another that works only once. They show that other users have reported similar symptoms, but do not establish a universal cause or remedy: per-app override not saving and per-app override working once.

What to do if the reset continues

  • Keep the diagnosis tied to the setting that actually changes: desktop scaling for a whole-display issue, or the compatibility override for an app-specific issue.
  • Include your Windows version and build, affected display or app, setting path, and before-and-after values when seeking support.
  • Do not infer a particular cause from the symptom alone. The cited sources do not establish whether an individual reset comes from a driver, policy, profile, or another condition.
