How to Stop Windows 11 Restarting After Updates

Windows 11 Active hours can schedule update restarts around your usual PC use, but they do not permanently block updates. Here’s how to set them and what to do if a restart is still required.

To reduce Windows 11 update restarts while you’re using your PC, set Active hours: go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours, then choose Automatically or set a manual start and end time. This schedules restarts around your usual working hours; it does not permanently block updates or guarantee a restart can never happen.

Set active hours to avoid restarts while you use your PC

Active hours tell Windows when you usually use the device, helping it avoid inconvenient automatic restarts after updates. Microsoft’s consumer instructions are for Windows 11 and Windows 10; the steps below focus on Windows 11. Microsoft Support explains active hours.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update > Advanced options.
  3. Select Active hours.
  4. Under Adjust active hours, choose Automatically to let Windows adapt the hours based on device activity, or choose Manually and set the start and end times you normally use the PC.

Microsoft describes the feature as a way to “help prevent inconvenient restarts.” Windows attempts automatic restarts outside active hours, so choose a window that covers your typical use rather than treating it as a restart ban.

When to pause updates instead

If you only need a short delay and the pause option is available, use Settings > Windows Update and select the pause control shown there. Microsoft’s administrator guidance describes a seven-day pause for feature and quality updates for users who have access to that setting. This postpones updates temporarily; it does not establish a lasting restart schedule. Resume updates when ready, or allow the pause period to expire. Microsoft Learn documents Windows Update settings and pause behavior.

What each option changes

Option Who controls it What it changes Main limit
Automatically adjusted active hours Individual user Schedules restart timing around inferred device use Reduces interruption; does not permanently prevent restarts.
Manually selected active hours Individual user Sets the hours when Windows should avoid an automatic restart A restart may still happen outside the selected window.
Pause updates Individual user, if permitted Temporarily postpones update delivery or installation Temporary; the cited Microsoft guidance describes a seven-day pause.
Group Policy or MDM Administrator Controls managed update installation, restart, and compliance behavior Policy interactions and deadlines can supersede what a user expects.

If Active hours is missing or unavailable

On a work- or school-managed PC, an administrator may control Windows Update through Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM). If a setting is greyed out, marked as managed, or unavailable, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to override the policy.

Microsoft documents administrator policies such as Turn off auto-restart for updates during active hours. Another policy, No auto-restart with logged on users, has a narrower effect and applies only with a particular scheduled-install configuration. These are not interchangeable consumer settings. Microsoft cautions that direct registry editing is not recommended and may conflict with Group Policy or MDM. See Microsoft Learn’s update restart policies.

Why Windows may still restart

Active hours only reschedule an automatic restart

Active hours reduce the chance of an update restart interrupting your usual schedule. They do not stop update installation or promise an indefinite reprieve; Windows can attempt the restart outside the selected hours.

Deadlines can override the usual schedule on managed devices

Organizations can set update compliance deadlines that eventually require a restart, including during active hours. For Windows 11 version 23H2 and later, Microsoft documents options to restart or schedule before the effective deadline; once that deadline passes, a pending restart can be forced. The specific timing and notifications depend on the Windows version and the organization’s policy. See Microsoft Learn’s update compliance deadline guidance.

Notifications are not restart controls

Suppressing update notifications changes the alerts you see, not when updates download or install. It is not a substitute for active hours or an administrator’s restart policy. Microsoft documents notification and restart policy behavior.
