How to stop Windows 11 apps from launching at startup

Stop Windows 11 apps from opening automatically with reversible Settings or Task Manager changes, then troubleshoot Startup-folder and registry entries safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stop a Windows 11 app opening automatically, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch that app Off. You can also right-click Start, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the app, and choose Disable. Both methods prevent automatic launching without uninstalling the app.

Choose the right way to stop the app

Windows 11 exposes registered startup applications in two everyday locations. Settings is the quickest route when you already know the app you want to stop. Task Manager shows the same startup list and adds a measured startup-impact label, which helps you decide what to change first.

Method Path or action Best for Extra information
Settings Start > Settings > Apps > Startup, then switch an app Off A simple, reversible change to a known app Direct on/off toggle
Task Manager Right-click Start > Task Manager > Startup apps, select an app, choose Disable Choosing among several apps or checking startup cost Displays startup-impact measurements
Startup folder Open the Startup folder in File Explorer and remove the app’s shortcut An app missing from Settings and Task Manager Only the shortcut is removed; the app remains installed
Registry Run entries Inspect the documented Run locations Advanced diagnosis when other locations do not explain the launch Higher risk; Microsoft warns edits can have unintended consequences

Interface wording can vary slightly after a Windows update, on a managed computer, or under an organization’s device policy. If a label is not exactly where described, look for the equivalent Startup or Startup apps page before changing anything else.

These controls apply to automatic launching when Windows starts or when you sign in. They do not block a program forever. You can still open a disabled application from the Start menu, a desktop shortcut, or a document that uses it. Before changing anything, note the app’s exact name and whether you rely on its background features; that makes it easier to reverse the change if a notification or device function disappears.

Turn off a startup app in Settings

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Choose Apps in the left pane.
  4. Open Startup.
  5. Find the application that opens when you sign in.
  6. Switch its toggle to Off.

The change applies to automatic startup behavior. It does not remove the application, its files, or your account data. You can use the same page later and switch the item back On if you discover that you need it to start automatically.

Settings is usually the safest first step because it changes one registered startup item without asking you to alter services, drivers, or system-wide configuration. Disable only an app you recognize and understand. A startup entry may provide a feature you expect immediately after sign-in, such as synchronization, notifications, device controls, or accessibility support.

After switching an item off, sign out and sign in again, or restart Windows, to verify the result. Closing the app window is not a useful test because that only ends the current session; startup behavior is evaluated during the next sign-in. If the app still appears, do not immediately disable several unrelated entries. Check whether the same app is listed twice or whether another program is opening it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable startup apps in Task Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button, or press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Task Manager.
  3. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
  4. Open Startup apps.
  5. Select the application you want to stop.
  6. Choose Disable in the command bar or from the right-click menu.

Task Manager shows the same registered startup applications that Settings manages, but it adds a startup-impact column. That makes it useful when several programs open at sign-in and you need to choose a sensible order for testing. The impact label is evidence about measured resource use, not a guarantee that disabling the item will produce a noticeable improvement on your particular PC.

To undo the change, return to Task Manager > Startup apps, select the disabled item, and choose Enable. If an app stops providing an expected function, restoring it here is the quickest recovery.

Task Manager can be especially helpful when you are comparing several recognizable apps. You can disable one, restart, and observe whether sign-in feels different or whether a needed background feature is missing. Keep a short note of the item changed and the date of the test. This avoids guessing later and lets you restore only the entry that caused a problem.

How to read Task Manager’s startup-impact labels

Microsoft defines the labels from measured CPU and disk activity during startup. The thresholds are categories used by Windows, not promises about how many seconds your computer will save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Label Microsoft’s stated threshold How to use it
Low Total CPU usage under 300 milliseconds and total disk usage under 292 kilobytes A relatively small measured startup load; disable it only if you do not need the app immediately
Medium Total CPU usage under 1 second but over 300 milliseconds, or total disk usage under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes A moderate measured load; consider your need for the app and test one change at a time
High Total CPU usage over 1 second or total disk usage over 3 megabytes A larger measured load; a recognizable app you do not need at sign-in is a reasonable candidate to test
None The item is disabled No automatic launch is currently configured through this entry
Not measured The item is enabled but measurement data is unavailable Do not treat the label as proof that the app is harmless or expensive

Microsoft’s performance guidance says that apps running at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage. There is no universal number of seconds that every PC will gain, because the result depends on the computer, the app, storage, and what else starts at the same time.

The units in the table are measurements of activity, not elapsed boot time. A high label does not mean the app is unsafe, and a low label does not mean it is useful to keep. Treat the column as a way to prioritize recognizable, nonessential apps. A security, accessibility, backup, synchronization, or device-control component may be important even when its measured impact is high.

If the app is not listed, check the Startup folder

Some applications start through a shortcut in the Windows Startup folder instead of a registered entry. If the app is absent from both Settings and Task Manager, open the Startup folder in File Explorer and look for its shortcut.

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Windows Startup folder.
  3. Identify the shortcut for the application that launches at sign-in.
  4. Move that shortcut out of the folder, or delete the shortcut if you are certain it is the one responsible.
  5. Sign out and sign in again to check whether the automatic launch has stopped.

Removing a shortcut from the Startup folder prevents that shortcut from launching at startup; it does not uninstall the application. Keep a copy of the shortcut elsewhere if you want an easy way to restore the behavior. If the app still opens, it may be using a registered entry, a scheduled mechanism, or another application that launches it, so continue with the less-invasive checks before editing the registry.

Be precise when working in File Explorer. Remove the shortcut, not the application’s main executable or installation folder. If more than one shortcut has a similar name, inspect each one and change only the entry you can identify. The folder method is reversible: restoring the original shortcut restores that particular startup route.

Registry Run entries: an advanced last resort

Windows also supports startup commands in registry Run locations. Microsoft documents these locations:

  • All users: HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • All users: HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
  • Current user: HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

Registry editing is not the normal way to disable one familiar app. Microsoft cautions that registry changes can have unintended consequences. A mistaken deletion or alteration can affect sign-in, another user’s startup behavior, or software that depends on the entry.

If you have reached this stage, first confirm that the launch is really caused by a Run value and that the value belongs to the application you recognize. Record the original value before making any change so you can restore it. Do not delete an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar: Windows and hardware software can use names that are not obvious from the display name. When possible, use Settings, Task Manager, or the Startup folder instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The two HKLM locations apply to all users of the computer, while HKCU applies to the current user. That distinction matters on shared PCs: changing an all-user value can affect people who never experienced the original problem. Registry work also requires care with 32-bit and 64-bit software, which is one reason Microsoft places these entries in an advanced troubleshooting category. If you cannot confidently identify the command and its owner, stop and use the ordinary startup controls or ask an administrator.

What to disable—and what to leave alone

Start with applications you recognize and do not need immediately after signing in. A high-impact label can help prioritize testing, but it is not a universal safe-to-disable list. Windows’ support guidance does not identify every startup component that is safe for every computer.

  • Good first candidates: a known app that you open only occasionally and do not need to run in the background after sign-in.
  • Use caution: entries connected to security software, device controls, accessibility features, backup, synchronization, or notifications you rely on.
  • Do not guess: an unknown publisher or cryptic name is not automatically unnecessary or malicious.
  • Change one item at a time: this makes it clear which change caused a missing notification, device function, or other side effect.

Disabling startup does not prevent you from opening the app manually later. It only removes the automatic launch at startup or sign-in through that particular entry.

Consider what you are trying to preserve. Some apps use startup to keep cloud files synchronized, show incoming messages, apply keyboard or graphics settings, or expose controls for connected hardware. If you turn one off, test the specific feature you depend on rather than judging only whether the app window appeared. If the feature is essential, enable the item again and leave it enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does this app keep opening when I turn on my PC?

Several startup mechanisms can produce the same symptom. The app may be a registered startup task shown in Settings and Task Manager, a shortcut in the Startup folder, or a registry Run entry. In some cases, one program opens another as part of its normal behavior, so disabling the visible app may not address the component that actually initiates the launch.

Use this order to isolate the cause:

  1. Check Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off the known app.
  2. Check Task Manager > Startup apps and disable the corresponding entry if it remains enabled.
  3. Inspect the Startup folder in File Explorer for its shortcut.
  4. Only for advanced diagnosis, inspect the documented registry Run locations.
  5. Sign out or restart after each single change and note the result.

If the app returns after an update, the update may have re-created a startup entry or shortcut. Repeat the checks and record which location contains it. If the app is launched by another program, identify that parent entry before disabling additional items.

Also distinguish a startup launch from an app reopening its previous window or restoring a session. The controls above address startup entries; they do not remove every setting inside an application that asks to resume where you left off. Check the app’s own preferences only after confirming that Windows is not launching a separate startup entry.

When a clean boot is appropriate

A clean boot is a troubleshooting procedure for a persistent conflict, not the routine way to turn off one app. Microsoft’s method uses System Configuration to hide and disable non-Microsoft services, then uses Task Manager to disable startup items. It asks you to track every disabled entry and restore normal startup afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a clean boot when you are diagnosing symptoms such as repeated crashes, a conflict that survives ordinary startup-app changes, or a problem whose source is unclear. Because the procedure affects services as well as startup items, some functions may temporarily stop working. Microsoft warns that misusing System Configuration can make the computer unusable.

Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure rather than improvising service changes. Before you begin, record the current settings. After testing, restore normal startup and re-enable the services and startup entries you need. A clean boot that fixes the symptom identifies a conflict to investigate; it is not a permanent recommendation to leave every non-Microsoft service disabled.

Do not use a clean boot merely because one app has a high startup-impact label. That label concerns measured startup activity, while a clean boot changes the operating environment for troubleshooting. If the goal is simply to stop one known program, the Settings toggle, Task Manager action, or Startup-folder shortcut is narrower and easier to undo.

Recovery if disabling an app causes trouble

  • In Settings > Apps > Startup, switch the app back On.
  • In Task Manager > Startup apps, select the item and choose Enable.
  • If you removed a Startup-folder shortcut, place the original shortcut back in that folder.
  • If you changed a registry Run value, restore the original value you recorded before editing.
  • Sign out or restart and test the affected function again.

If restoring the entry does not fix the issue, undo any other startup change made during the same troubleshooting session. Reversing changes in the opposite order helps identify the specific item involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the original shortcut or registry value until you have completed testing. A written list of changes is useful on a shared or managed computer, where another person may need to understand why a synchronization, accessibility, or device feature stopped working. If an administrator controls the device, a policy may re-enable the item or prevent you from changing it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing disable with uninstall: the app remains installed and can still be launched manually.
  • Disabling everything marked high impact: the label measures resource use, not whether you need the feature.
  • Editing the registry first: use Settings, Task Manager, and the Startup folder before considering registry locations.
  • Changing many entries at once: you lose the ability to identify the cause of a side effect.
  • Expecting a guaranteed speed increase: Windows reports startup impact, but actual boot improvement varies by PC.
  • Leaving a clean-boot configuration in place: restore normal startup after the diagnostic test.
  • Deleting the application instead of its shortcut: the Startup-folder fix requires changing the shortcut only.
  • Assuming an absent list entry means no startup mechanism exists: check the Startup folder before escalating to registry work.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Do you know the app and do not need it immediately? If yes, disable it in Settings.
  2. Do you want impact information or a list of several entries? Use Task Manager.
  3. Is the app missing from both lists? Check the Startup folder in File Explorer.
  4. Does it still launch and you have advanced Windows experience? Investigate the documented Run locations carefully.
  5. Is the problem a broader conflict rather than one known app? Use Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure and restore normal startup afterward.

These steps keep the change reversible and progressively increase complexity only when the simpler startup controls do not explain the behavior.

Questions people commonly ask

Does disabling startup improve every PC? No. Microsoft says startup apps can slow boot time and increase background usage, but the effect depends on the computer, storage, app, and other items starting at the same time. Use the impact label as a clue, not a promised time saving.

Why can I still open an app after disabling it? Disabling affects automatic startup only. The app remains installed and available from Start, a shortcut, or a file association.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the Startup page is missing or looks different? Windows wording can vary with updates, device policy, or the computer’s configuration. Look for the equivalent Startup or Startup apps control. On a managed device, an administrator may restrict changes.

Should I disable an item marked Not measured? Not measured means the item is enabled but Windows has no available measurement data. It is neither a safety warning nor evidence that the item consumes no resources. Decide based on whether you recognize and need the app.

What if an update turns the app back on? Check Settings and Task Manager again, then inspect the Startup folder if necessary. An update can recreate a startup entry or shortcut, so note which location contains the new entry before changing it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will disabling a startup app delete it?

No. Disabling changes only whether Windows launches that entry automatically. The application remains installed and can be opened normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I turn the app’s startup behavior back on?

Yes. Use the same Settings toggle or select the item in Task Manager’s Startup apps list and choose Enable.

Why does Task Manager say “Not measured”?

The item is enabled, but Windows does not have startup measurement data for it. The label is not a performance or safety verdict.

Should I use a clean boot to stop one app?

Usually no. Clean boot changes services as well as startup items and is intended to diagnose conflicts. Use Settings, Task Manager, or the Startup folder for a single app.

What if the app is not in Settings or Task Manager?

Check the Windows Startup folder in File Explorer for a shortcut. Removing that shortcut stops that startup route without uninstalling the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will disabling startup stop me opening the app later?

No. It only stops automatic launching at startup or sign-in. You can still open the installed app manually.

Should I disable every high-impact entry?

No. High impact describes measured CPU or disk activity, not whether the app provides a feature you need. Disable only recognizable, nonessential entries and test one change at a time.

Why did the app return after an update?

An update may have recreated a registered startup entry or Startup-folder shortcut. Check those locations again and disable the specific entry if appropriate.

The Bottom Line

Start with Settings > Apps > Startup or Task Manager > Startup apps; both are reversible and do not uninstall the program. If the app is absent, check its Startup-folder shortcut. Treat registry Run entries and clean boot as advanced troubleshooting, and change only items you recognize.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
