To stop one website from using your laptop’s webcam, block or remove that site’s camera permission in your browser. Use the browser’s site-permission settings rather than relying on closing a camera prompt. If you want a broader block, review your operating system’s camera controls too; those controls can affect more than one site or app.

Block a website’s camera access in your browser

Browser permissions are the direct control for a single website. The paths below reflect vendor documentation available on October 4, 2026; menu names can change with software updates.

Google Chrome on desktop

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera.
  2. Review the allowed and blocked sites. Remove the website’s saved exception to clear its permission, or change its access to blocked where that option is shown.
  3. Choose the default camera behavior if you also want to control how sites request access in the future.

Chrome’s camera prompt may offer temporary choices such as “Allow this time” or “Never allow.” For a previously allowed site, review the saved entry in Camera settings rather than assuming that dismissing a prompt changed its existing permission. See Google’s Chrome camera and microphone settings. A work- or school-managed browser may have these settings controlled by an administrator.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions, then find Camera and select its settings.
  2. Review saved Allow or Block permissions. Remove the site’s entry to clear its saved choice.
  3. For the site currently open, use the permissions icon in the address bar, or open Page Info → Permissions, and set a custom Allow or Block value.

Clearing a saved permission means Firefox can ask again on a later visit; choose Block if you want to prevent that site from receiving camera access without a new approval. See Mozilla’s camera and microphone permission instructions.

  2. Select the website, open its camera permission, and set it to Block.

A blocked camera permission can prevent features that need video, such as joining a video conference. See Microsoft’s camera and microphone permissions guidance.

Safari on Mac

  1. Open Safari → Settings → Websites → Camera.
  2. Find the website and change its camera access setting.

Safari’s website setting controls an individual site. For a broader review of which apps can use the camera, use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera as described in Apple’s macOS camera privacy guide.

Use operating-system controls for broader access

System camera settings are a separate layer from browser site permissions. They are useful for reviewing or restricting access more broadly, but they do not always provide a dependable switch for one website in one browser.

Microsoft classifies browsers such as Edge as desktop apps. The standard desktop-app control does not let you toggle each desktop app individually, and some desktop apps may not appear in its list or may still access the camera when that setting is off. Treat these controls as broader system settings, not as a guaranteed per-browser or per-site kill switch. Microsoft also notes that Windows Hello may use a camera for sign-in even when the general app camera setting is off. See Microsoft’s Windows camera, microphone, and privacy guidance.

Some Windows devices have a camera activity light; Microsoft says it turns on when the camera is active. Devices without a light may show a notification instead. An indicator can help you notice activity, but the browser’s site permission is the direct setting for blocking one website.

Block microphone access separately if needed

Camera and microphone permissions are distinct. Blocking a site’s camera does not, by itself, block its microphone. If you also want to prevent the site from hearing you, open the same browser or system privacy controls and review its Microphone permission separately.

When a physical webcam cover helps

A webcam privacy cover can physically block the lens when closed, but it does not revoke a website’s browser permission or disable the microphone. Cover designs and laptop lids vary, so confirm that an accessory fits without interfering with the display before using it. This is a physical barrier, not a substitute for managing software permissions.
