If Windows or Microsoft Edge warns about an app you believe is safe, first identify which protection raised the alert. For an Edge download warning, verify the file and use Edge’s “Report this file as safe” option if you believe it is a false positive. If Windows identifies Smart App Control, Microsoft says there is no individual-app bypass; contact the developer about signing the app. Neither route requires turning off protection.
First identify which warning you are seeing
“SmartScreen warning” can refer to different checks. The location and exact wording matter: Edge may warn about a download, Windows may show an app-reputation warning when you launch a file, or Windows may explicitly say Smart App Control blocked it. Windows Security groups several protections under App & browser control, so similar-looking settings do not necessarily control the same warning. See Microsoft’s App & browser control guidance.

- Alert beside a download in Edge: follow the Edge reporting steps below.
- Warning when launching an app: confirm the file’s source and publisher before deciding what to do.
- Alert explicitly naming Smart App Control: use the developer-side route; Microsoft says there is no per-app bypass.
- Settings are unavailable or warnings cannot be overridden: the device may be managed by an organization.
Verify the app before treating the warning as a false positive
A reputation warning is a risk signal, not proof that a file is malicious—and familiarity with an app or company name does not prove that a particular download is genuine. Check that you obtained the installer from the publisher’s official site or another source you intentionally trust, and that the product and publisher match what you expected. Microsoft recommends trusted sources such as the Microsoft Store and keeping Windows, your browser, and apps up to date. Its guidance is available in Protect your PC from unwanted software.

If the warning appears on an Edge download and you have checked that the file is the one you meant to download, Microsoft’s documented action is to report it as safe. Microsoft can review the report; the instructions do not promise a specific review time or outcome.

- In Edge, find the flagged download and select the three-dot menu beside its alert.
- Choose Report this file as safe.
- Follow any prompts shown by Edge to submit the report.
Microsoft’s false-positive guidance describes this reporting option. Reporting asks Microsoft to review the file; it is not a guaranteed immediate local exception.
If Smart App Control blocks the app
Smart App Control is a Windows 11 feature distinct from SmartScreen’s reputation checks and from app-source recommendations. It evaluates whether an app is likely to be safe using cloud-based security prediction and code-signing information. Microsoft’s FAQ says, “There is currently no way to bypass Smart App Control protection for individual apps.” The documented recourse is to contact the app’s developer and ask them to sign the app with a valid signature. See Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ and Smart App Control overview.

Changing Windows’ recommendation about installing apps from outside the Microsoft Store does not create a Smart App Control allow rule or establish that a flagged file is safe. These are separate controls.
If SmartScreen settings are locked on a managed PC
On some managed Windows 10 or Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise devices, Group Policy or Intune can enforce SmartScreen settings, including whether users may ignore warnings. If a setting is greyed out or an override is unavailable on a work or school PC, contact your organization’s administrator rather than trying to bypass its policy. Microsoft documents these controls in Available Microsoft Defender SmartScreen settings.

Do not confuse app-source recommendations with reputation warnings
Windows can recommend or restrict where apps come from, such as preferring Microsoft Store apps. That setting is not the same as SmartScreen’s assessment of a particular download or Smart App Control’s decision to block an app. Only change app recommendation settings if that is the message you actually see; doing so does not validate a flagged file. Microsoft explains the setting in Change your app recommendation settings in Windows.
