If your original AirTag works and those features would not change how you use it, there is little reason to replace it. The new model keeps the same form factor, so compatible AirTag holders and accessories still fit.
What’s different between AirTag 2 and the original?
Apple introduced AirTag (2nd generation) on January 26, 2026. It adds Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip and an upgraded Bluetooth chip. The practical changes are focused on finding a misplaced tag: Precision Finding can work from farther away on supported devices, the speaker is louder, and specified Apple Watch models can use Precision Finding.

The range and sound figures are Apple’s manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The relative claims do not specify an absolute finding distance, so they should not be read as a guaranteed distance in every setting.
Who can use the longer Precision Finding range?
The enhanced range is not available to every iPhone owner. Apple Support lists AirTag (2nd generation) paired with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. Availability varies by region, including because Ultra Wideband features are not available everywhere. Check Apple’s AirTag (2nd generation) technical specifications for current compatibility details before buying for this feature.

Pairing requires an Apple Account and an iPhone with iOS 26 or later, or an iPad with iPadOS 26 or later. Apple’s launch announcement lists Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later for Precision Finding from the wrist; its technical specifications also require watchOS 26.2.1 and note regional availability. Owning a compatible watch alone is not enough if the software or regional requirements are not met.
Is the speaker upgrade useful?
A louder speaker matters most when an AirTag is buried in a bag, under furniture, or among other belongings where seeing the on-screen direction is not enough. Apple says the second-generation speaker is 50 percent louder and can be heard from up to twice as far as the original. Those are comparative manufacturer claims; Apple does not provide a universal audible distance, and surroundings affect how easy a sound is to hear.

If your current tags reliably help you find keys, bags, or other belongings, and you do not need the louder speaker, supported extended range, or watch-based finding, continuing to use them avoids a replacement that may bring little practical benefit. The second generation does not require replacing compatible holders: Apple says it retains the same form factor and works with existing AirTag accessories. The tag itself does not include a holder, so a key ring or luggage attachment is a separate accessory.

What AirTag does—and does not—do
When an AirTag is outside its paired iPhone’s range, nearby Apple devices in the Find My network can detect it over Bluetooth and report its approximate location to its owner. Apple says Find My communications are end-to-end encrypted, location history is not physically stored on the AirTag, and protections against unwanted tracking include cross-platform alerts and frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers. Apple describes AirTag as designed for tracking objects, not people or pets.
For delayed luggage, Share Item Location lets an owner temporarily share an item’s location with participating third parties, such as airlines. Apple says the owner can stop sharing and that access expires automatically after seven days. Apple reported that more than 50 airlines accept Share Item Location links. It also cited SITA figures of 26 percent fewer baggage delays and 90 percent fewer incidents of truly lost or unrecoverable luggage; those figures are attributed by Apple to SITA and are not AirTag 2 test results or a guarantee for an individual trip. Details of the product and these features appear in Apple’s January 2026 launch announcement.
