How to Stop Re-Explaining Yourself to Claude and Gemini With One Shared Memory File

Claude and Gemini don't sync memory, but you can keep one editable file and import it into each. Here is the setup, the limits and the privacy checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claude and Gemini do not sync memory with each other. What works is a single plain-text file that you own, which you bring into each assistant through the import tools both companies document. The file is the source of truth, and each assistant receives a copy that you refresh when something changes. Most of the value comes from keeping that file short, specific and current.

What “one shared memory” actually means

A shared memory in this setup is a file you control, not a feature that links the two products. Neither Claude nor Gemini is documented as automatically syncing its memory with the other. The documented tools are one-way transfers: you move context into a service, and the service stores it as its own memory or as a chat thread. An edit you make in one assistant does not appear in the other, so you update the file and import again.

Layer Claude Gemini Apps
Preferences and context Memory import: paste context from another AI service, and Claude extracts it into memory entries you can review. Memory can be exported and saved as a local Markdown file. Import memory to Gemini: paste the text generated by the other assistant. Google says the imported content becomes a new chat thread and is integrated into future conversations.
Old chat history Not stated in Anthropic’s memory import and export help page, which covers memory rather than another service’s chat archive. ZIP upload through the chat-history import, with the limits described below.
Project materials Project instructions apply to every chat in that project. Uploaded documents, text files and code snippets form project knowledge. Google’s import documentation states that project files cannot be imported with chat history.
Eligibility Memory imports are listed for Free, Pro, Max and Team on the web and in Claude Desktop. Some Team and Enterprise organizations may still use legacy memory. Requires a personal Google Account and an age of 18 or older. Unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, and some Gemini surfaces are excluded.
Status Anthropic describes memory imports as “experimental and still in active development.” Chat-history import is capped at a ZIP file size and a daily upload count, detailed below.

Build the memory file

Keep the file small enough that you would read all of it before a long task. Four sections cover most needs. Use plain text and avoid anything you would not want stored by a third party.

## How to respond
- Lead with the answer, then the reasoning.
- Keep prose tight; use short lists for steps.

## Who I am and what I do
- Role, field, and the context an assistant needs to be useful.

## Current projects
- Project name: goal, status, constraints, next milestone.

## Do not assume
- Do not assume I want a summary unless I ask for one.
- Do not assume details from older projects still apply.
  • Dated header. The date tells you and the assistant when the file was last checked.
  • Explicit exclusions. The “Do not assume” section prevents stale context from shaping new answers.
  • Sensitive details kept out. Include only what an assistant genuinely needs to do the job.

Bring the file into Claude

Anthropic’s Claude Help Center article “Import and export your memory from Claude,” dated September 2, 2026, describes the flow below.

  1. Open Settings and go to Memory, then start the memory import flow.
  2. Paste your memory file as the context to import. Claude extracts information from the text into memory entries.
  3. Review every resulting entry. Claude may not always incorporate imported information, so check that each entry is present, correct and not stale. Edit or delete anything wrong.
  4. To keep a portable backup, use the export option. Anthropic’s help page says exported memory can be saved as a local Markdown file.

Treat the import as a best effort. Because the feature is experimental, confirm the result with a question that depends on one of your preferences before relying on it.

Bring the file into Gemini

Google’s Gemini Apps help page “Import from other AI platforms to Gemini Apps” describes memory import as copying a response generated by the source assistant into Gemini’s import flow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Gemini Apps, open the import memory flow labelled Import memory to Gemini.
  2. Paste the text generated by the other assistant. Google’s help page describes the input as a response from the source assistant. It does not describe pasting a file directly, so if you paste your file, check the outcome carefully.
  3. Submit the import. Google says the content becomes a new chat thread and is integrated for future conversations.
  4. Open a new chat and ask Gemini to list what it has recorded about your preferences. Correct any errors in a follow-up message.

Import is unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, so readers there should not expect this path to work.

Move old conversations into Gemini

If you want past conversations as well as preferences, use Google’s “Import Your AI Chat History & Memories to Gemini” process. It takes a ZIP archive exported from the other platform. The limits Google documents, as its help page stood in 2026, are:

  • A ZIP file of up to 5 GB.
  • Up to five ZIP uploads per day.
  • Processing that may take up to a day, depending on the source platform and export.
  • Text transfers. Images and files generated in the previous app do not.
  • Project files and attachments are not imported. Google’s help page states, “No, you cannot import project files.”
  1. Export your chat history from the platform you are leaving. The export option depends on that service.
  2. In Gemini, upload the ZIP through the chat-history import.
  3. Wait for processing. Expect up to a day before the conversations are available.
  4. Keep the project files separately. Copy the essentials of any project into the “Current projects” section of your memory file so both assistants can read them.

Use Claude projects for project-level context

Claude projects are the repeatable option inside Claude, but they do not work as global memory. Project instructions apply to every chat in that project. Uploaded documents, text files and code snippets become project knowledge. Anthropic’s help documentation says context is not shared between project chats unless it is added to the project knowledge base.

Use projects for material that belongs to one body of work, such as a manuscript, a codebase or a client brief. Keep the short summary of each project in your memory file, so Gemini and any new Claude project start from the same description. That summary is the link between the two; the project knowledge base remains separate.

Privacy and verification checklist

  • Before importing chat history into Gemini, check the Activity controls in your Google account. Google says imported and continued chats are saved in Activity and used to improve its services, including training generative AI models. Imported information is subject to Google’s Privacy Policy, and you can manage or delete Activity.
  • After importing into Claude, review each memory entry. You can view and edit memory, pause it, or reset it.
  • Leave credentials, confidential client data and private health details out of the file unless an assistant truly needs them. Check each provider’s current policy before you paste anything sensitive.
  • Confirm the import with a question that depends on one stored preference. If the answer is wrong, correct the file and re-import.

Keep the file current

Update the file when a preference or project changes, then re-import it into each assistant you use. Review the dated header at the start of each month, and remove any project that has ended. A short, accurate file that you refresh deliberately works better than a long one that drifts out of date.
