A dedicated IP is a VPN exit address assigned to one subscriber instead of being shared across many customers. It helps when a work system, private server, or login expects the same address every time. Five consumer VPN options currently advertise it: NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, PureVPN, and a fifth candidate, ExpressVPN or Private Internet Access (PIA), which we have not verified on official pages. The services differ in locations, device limits, protocols, and billing, so the right choice depends on what the address has to do.
What a dedicated IP does and does not do
A standard VPN connection exits through an address that many customers share. A dedicated IP replaces that pool with an address reserved for your account, so every session through it appears to come from the same place. Two practical effects follow. Services that allowlist specific addresses see a consistent source, and because the address is not shared with other users, it may avoid verification challenges caused by the reputation of a shared address. The second effect is a possibility, not a guarantee.

A dedicated IP does not make you anonymous. Traffic from a reserved address is easier to link to one customer than traffic blended into a shared pool. NordVPN’s own comparison makes this point: shared IPs make individual activity harder to trace, while dedicated IPs suit fixed-access systems (NordVPN product page). Treat a dedicated IP as a stability tool, not a privacy tool.

- Work or school systems that allowlist a specific address or restrict access to known networks.
- Self-hosted services such as a private server or remote-access setup that you reach from outside your home or office.
- Logins that repeatedly challenge sessions arriving from shared VPN addresses.
- Not a good fit when your priority is blending in with a large pool of users rather than being recognized consistently.
The five options at a glance

How to choose between them
Work through these questions in order. Each one narrows the list before you compare prices.
- Location. Does the service offer the exact country or city your system expects? Check whether the location can be changed later, since some providers lock it at purchase.
- Devices and protocols. Which devices will use the address, and which VPN protocol do they need? If several devices must connect at once, confirm the simultaneous-device limit for the protocol you plan to use.
- Account limits. Can you hold more than one dedicated address? What is the process if the address must be replaced, and who handles it?
- Recovery risk. If activation depends on a token or account credential, record where it is stored before you need it.
- Total cost. Compare the base VPN plan plus the dedicated-IP add-on, the billing term, the renewal amount, taxes, and refund terms at local checkout. Record the date you saw each price, because add-on pricing changes.
- Privacy fit. If the goal is a consistent, attributable address, a dedicated IP serves that goal. If you want the greatest possible blending, a shared address is the better choice.
A note on Proton VPN
Tom’s Guide reports that Proton VPN’s dedicated IP addresses are reserved for business users rather than typical consumer subscribers (Tom’s Guide). If you are a consumer, confirm eligibility directly with Proton before planning around it.

What this comparison establishes, and what it does not
Provider pages document feature availability and the limits listed above for NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, and PureVPN. The ExpressVPN and PIA details come from a secondary comparison and remain unverified. TechRadar’s 2026 general VPN guide reflects its own testing of VPNs in general, but it does not compare dedicated-IP implementations, so it does not settle which dedicated address performs best (TechRadar).

This article does not include hands-on speed, reconnection, or allowlist testing, so it does not rank the five by performance or reliability. Provider marketing describes features, not independently measured results. If a work system depends on the address, test it with the actual service, from the country where it will be used, before committing to a plan.

Checking the address before you rely on it
- Confirm the address is accepted by the target service from your actual network, not only from the VPN app.
- Reconnect at least once and confirm the address does not change, since stability is the reason you are paying for it.
- Keep the activation token, account recovery details, and support contact somewhere accessible when a device is replaced.
