These steps can address connection, software or surface-grime issues; persistent drift may mean a worn joystick or an internal fault. The repair options differ: the standard DualSense joystick is soldered in, while the DualSense Edge has a user-replaceable stick module.
What causes PlayStation controller drift?
Stick drift is unwanted analog input when a controller’s stick is untouched. Possible causes include outdated software or firmware, settings, debris, worn joystick components or a faulty circuit board; the symptom alone does not identify which one is responsible.

In an analog stick, moving conductive contacts help the controller read stick position through electrical resistance. Wear can change those readings over time. iFixit explains the mechanism and common troubleshooting considerations in its DualSense controller drift troubleshooting guide.

Try these steps before opening the controller

Restart the console or computer
Restart the PlayStation console, or the computer if you are using the controller with a PC. Reconnect the controller and check whether the unwanted input remains.

Reset the DualSense
Turn off the controller. Use a paperclip or SIM-eject tool to press and hold the small reset button on its back for at least five seconds, then reconnect it. A reset clears controller settings. This instruction is for DualSense; check the instructions for your specific controller model before applying it elsewhere. See iFixit’s reset and drift troubleshooting steps.

Check for controller software updates
Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and check the controller software update option in the console settings. Menu names and locations can change between software versions, so follow the current on-console instructions if the path differs. Clean the outside of the controller
Wipe the body with a damp cloth. To clean grime around the thumbstick dome, iFixit suggests using 90% isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab. Apply it to the swab rather than pouring liquid into the controller, and keep this external cleaning separate from opening the device. Details are in the external cleaning guidance.

Confirm whether the stick registers input at rest
If you have access to a computer controller tester, connect the controller and watch the stick input without touching it. Unwanted movement on the tester can help confirm that the controller is registering input at rest; check again after any repair to see whether the symptom changed.

Should you clean inside a DualSense?
Internal cleaning is an invasive step, not an extension of wiping the outside. iFixit’s disassembly-based procedure is specifically for the DualSense V1: it calls for powering off and opening the controller, then using 99.8% isopropyl alcohol around the internal joystick components. The guide addresses dirt or material that may cause unwanted movement; it does not fix a broken joystick or other internal fault. It is not established as a procedure for DualShock 4 or every DualSense revision, and it cannot guarantee a repair. Do not pour solvent into an assembled controller. Choose a repair that matches your controller

For a standard DualSense, iFixit’s cited replacement assembly is listed for DualSense V1 (BDM-010) and V2 (BDM-020), and the product page says installation requires soldering. Check the model and part compatibility before buying; that listing does not establish compatibility with every later revision. See the replacement potentiometer assembly listing.

When to stop and seek repair help
If drift continues after basic troubleshooting, or remains after joystick cleaning or replacement, the fault may be a worn part or a board-level problem. A replacement stick will not correct every internal fault. iFixit notes liquid damage as one common association with board issues and says board repair can require advanced skills. If you do not have electronics repair experience, consult a qualified repair service rather than attempting board work.
Before paying for service or parts, check Sony support for warranty and service information available in your region; current coverage and service options are not established here. For your decision, confirm the controller model and revision, whether the simple steps changed the symptom, whether the evidence points to debris or a failed component, and whether you have the tools and skill required for the proposed repair.
