If Pixel Buds pause audio while you’re falling asleep, first check In-ear detection: Google says the earbuds pause media when they detect that they’ve been taken out. A supported Pixel Watch’s Bedtime mode is another documented cause. Google’s help pages do not identify sleep or staying still by itself as a pause trigger, so the right fix depends on what else is happening when playback stops.
Identify what is pausing the audio
| What you notice | Possible cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Playback pauses when an earbud shifts or comes out, and resumes when you put it back in. | In-ear detection, which pauses and resumes media when the buds detect removal and replacement. | Turn off In-ear detection in the Pixel Buds settings. |
| Playback pauses when a supported Pixel Watch enters Bedtime mode. | The watch’s Bedtime mode, which tells connected Pixel Buds to pause currently playing media. | Check whether Bedtime mode is active and exit it if needed. |
| Playback pauses when you speak. | Conversation Detection on Pixel Buds Pro series. | Review Conversation Detection in the Pixel Buds settings. |
| Audio stutters, skips, or cuts out rather than pausing cleanly. | A playback, connection, or streaming problem. | Try Google’s playback troubleshooting steps. |
Turn off In-ear detection
Google says In-ear detection is enabled automatically when Pixel Buds are paired with an Android 6.0 or later device with Fast Pair enabled. When active, the feature pauses media after detecting that the earbuds have been taken out and resumes when they are put back in. Google says the setting remains enabled for connected host devices until you change it. See Google’s In-ear detection instructions.

- On a Pixel phone running Android 10 or later: Open Settings → Connected Devices → tap the settings icon beside your paired Pixel Buds.
- On another Android device: Open the Google Pixel Buds app and go to the connected buds’ settings.
- Find In-ear detection. On A-Series and Pixel Buds (2020), it appears in the main settings list. On Pixel Buds Pro, Pro 2, and 2a, open More settings first.
- Turn off In-ear detection.
The tradeoff is that removal will no longer trigger the feature’s automatic pause-and-resume behavior. Google says that with In-ear detection off, triple-tapping the right earbud manually puts the earbuds to sleep or wakes them.

If you use a Pixel Watch that supports automatic Bedtime mode, check whether the mode starts at the same time playback stops. Google says Pixel Buds pause currently playing media when they detect that the watch is in Bedtime mode. The buds also disable touch controls and “Hey Google” hotword detection. They normally leave the mode when Bedtime mode ends on the watch. Details are in Google’s Pixel Watch Bedtime mode guidance.

Exit Bedtime mode on the earbuds
- Put the Pixel Buds in their charging case, or answer a phone call.
- If the buds remain stuck in sleep after the phone reboots, unlock the phone or put the buds in the case.
- If you use multipoint and media on a secondary device does not pause automatically, pause that media manually.
Check Conversation Detection if pauses follow speech
On Pixel Buds Pro series, Conversation Detection can pause media when it detects speech and resume playback after the conversation ends. If pauses happen when you talk rather than when you settle into bed, review this setting in the Pixel Buds settings. Google’s Conversation Detection help page describes the feature, but does not provide a complete current menu path.
