To stop the “Start backup” prompt for a particular folder in Windows 11, turn off that folder’s backup in OneDrive. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, then go to Help & Settings > Settings > Sync and backup > Manage backup. Turn off the toggle beside the folder and choose where its existing files should remain.
Turn off backup for Desktop, Documents, or Pictures
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. If you do not see it, check the notification area’s hidden icons.
- Select Help & Settings, then Settings.
- Open Sync and backup, then select Manage backup.
- Turn off the toggle beside the folder you no longer want OneDrive to back up.
- Review the location choices in the prompt and choose whether the files should remain only in OneDrive or only on the PC.
The prompt’s exact wording can vary with the OneDrive app or Windows version. These steps change backup for the selected folder; they do not disconnect OneDrive from the PC.

What happens to files when backup stops?
Files already backed up remain in the OneDrive folder and may no longer appear in the corresponding folder on the device. If you want them back in the local Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folder, you may need to move them there manually. New files added to that device folder after backup is stopped will not be backed up by OneDrive.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Download cloud-only files before moving them
A cloud-only file may not move until it is downloaded to the PC. In File Explorer, right-click the file and choose Always keep on this device. Once it is available locally, retry the move or place it in the folder you want to use.

Use Windows 11’s related sync settings
You can also find OneDrive folder-sync controls in Settings > Accounts > Windows backup > Manage sync settings. Windows Backup includes other backup and settings options as well, so use OneDrive’s Manage backup screen when your goal is specifically to stop backup for an individual folder.
When to unlink or remove OneDrive instead
Turning off one folder’s backup is narrower than unlinking OneDrive, hiding it, or uninstalling it. Choose one of those broader options only if you want to stop using OneDrive on the PC or remove its app presence, rather than change backup for a single folder. Microsoft documents these as separate actions: OneDrive unlinking and removal options.

Does turning off backup remove every File Explorer reminder?
Microsoft’s instructions explain how to stop folder backup, but they do not establish that this removes every “Start backup” reminder across all Windows 11 builds, account types, or organization-managed devices. If the folder toggle is already off and a reminder remains, check the Windows Backup sync settings or ask your organization’s administrator whether the device is managed.
Keep a separate backup if you still need one
Stopping OneDrive backup does not create another copy of your files. Windows File History is a separate option that can back up to an external drive or a network location. Its destination must be connected and configured, and restoring files depends on where the backup was saved. See Microsoft’s File History guidance.
