First identify which kind of “full screen” you need
WhatsApp can appear not to fill the screen for two different reasons. If the chat list and an open conversation are both visible within WhatsApp, that is its internal two-pane layout. If the whole WhatsApp app is displayed in a smaller floating window or beside another app, that is a Samsung multitasking window. Use the relevant fix below; changing one does not change the other.

- Chat list beside conversation: turn off WhatsApp’s Side-by-side view.
- WhatsApp in a small or divided system window: expand the app window using its Samsung window controls.
Turn off WhatsApp’s two-pane chat layout
- Open WhatsApp on your Galaxy Tab.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Chats, then Chat settings.
- Turn off Side-by-side view.
- Open a conversation and check that it now spans the display.
This setting is for people who prefer to focus on one conversation at a time. If you prefer to keep the chat list visible for quicker navigation, leave it on. Samsung’s large-screen design guidance explains that multi-pane layouts can show more information together and reduce full-screen transitions, while simply stretching phone-style content may be harder to read or use space poorly. If “Side-by-side view” is missing
Search WhatsApp’s settings for “Side-by-side view” or “side-by-side,” and check that WhatsApp is updated. The cited Samsung Members answer is from 2023, so it does not establish that the same labels or path appear in every current app version. Avoid changing unrelated Samsung display settings to solve an in-app layout issue.

Expand WhatsApp if it is in a pop-up or split-screen window
If WhatsApp itself is confined to a floating window or shares the display with another app, open the window controls and choose the expand or maximize option. Samsung’s multitasking instructions describe an Expand window control for returning a pop-up app to its regular full-screen view. The precise controls can vary with Galaxy tablet software and wireless provider, so there is no single system-menu path that applies to every model. Samsung multitasking guidance
Why WhatsApp may show two panes on a tablet
A tablet has more screen space than a phone, so an app may use it to show the conversation list and an open chat at once. That can make switching conversations faster; it is not necessarily a display fault. Samsung’s developer guidance describes tablet layout categories using screen-width thresholds, including 840 dp for expanded windows in tablet portrait and landscape. WhatsApp on a Galaxy Tab
WhatsApp supports Android tablets as linked devices. To connect a tablet, WhatsApp directs users to link it through the phone app’s Settings > Linked Devices flow. This is separate from choosing whether chats appear side by side on the tablet. WhatsApp for Android
